  1. We got a bargain price but now need return to Chiang Mai 1 week early. In Ban Saen Saran, near Chiva Som. On lovely beach. 3 swimming pools, 1 with water slides for the kids. Other amenities. Normally 25,000 per week. Fully furnished, kitchen, dining room, living room, balcony, etc.

PM me. 15,000 or quickly make some other reasonable offer. Additional weeks also still available from the owner, if you want.

  2. Not sure how this second thread was created but will put my last reply here as well.

I have said something like this before but feel that it is time to say it again.

Thaivisa.com and especially the members here are really incredible. So many people, so often willing to lend a hand.

Thank you ejpool44. I found their phone number and called and ended up speaking with the owner, but she was fully booked, however arranged to get us into a lovely 2 bedroom condo in neighboring Baan Saen Salon, right on the water and with 3 swimming pools and water slide. The little one and the wife are very happy. Amazing that we could get this condo with kitchen, etc. for such a short stay AND at a reasonable price.

Now time to wake the lights of my life and take them down to the beach.

    Again Thx to all!

  4. Hello neighbors,

I just arrived down from Chiang Mai with wife and toddler and two friends in tow to see friends who are here for a two week educational conference. I only learned that they would be here yesterday, so this is all so last minute.

At the very least, 2 bedroom, 2 bath, not far from beach and with pool (the little one loves water) would be ideal. Pls pm me if you have or know of something.

Another option would be if anyone knows of some nice hotel with a real bargain promotion.

    Thanks all.

  6. I'm on my third replay of getting my retirement visa because of again being out of the country beyond the validity of both my previous retirement visa and of my re-entry permit. No big deal, just an unfortunate fact of life sometimes when I go out of country that life events out there keep me out of The Land of Smiles longer than I could wish.

But something always different with immigration. As previously mentioned you now need at least 15 days on your current visa or 30 day entry, so when I waltzed in as usual to Chiang Mai immigration (airport office which is the correct branch to get the 90 day non-O) with 2 days remaining on my 30 day entry I received the sad news that I would now need to sashay on over to the new office at Promenada to get a 30 day extension for 1900 baht and then come back to the airport branch with 20 days left on it to be safe to get the 90 day non-O which is required before one can convert to the retirement visa. facepalm.gifThen go to the Promenada branch after at least 60 days but before 90 days to apply for the retirement visa

But now more to the point for you bwh. Why, if you have the 15 days remaining, are you bothering with the expense and hassle of flying to Penang, unless you really want to have a holiday and see Penang or are in some rush to get your retirement visa sooner? Just go to your local immigration any time before you hit the 15 day remaining limit and apply (and better sooner if this is your first time as you might run into some hitch). Easy if you have all needed paperwork.

On a side note, after reading horror stories a couple of months ago about huge lines at the Promenada office since the move, I am happy to report that at both offices I experienced no lines and just a 1 hour wait for the processing to be completed for the 30 day extension.

  7. I guess we have it much better up here in Chiang Mai. I am buying avos now at one of the local semi-wholesale fruit markets (just up the side street from the US Consulate) at 45 baht per kg for imports from Myanmar. That means 3 good size or 2 fairly huge cados for 45 baht. And so far by my picky rating system they have all been from good to surprisingly excellent. All with high oil content and nice taste. The best one so far was a very ripe one that the seller threw in as a bonus today. I figured it would be half rotten, but turned out to just be perfectly ripe with firm/buttery texture and the best full flavor of any cado I have ever bought in Asia, not just Thailand. Next time I go I may be scooping up most of her ripe ones that she has on a separate table for some bargain price. For most fruits and especially cados I recommend seeking out your best local produce or fruit market.

It seems so far that the more elongated the better in terms of taste and fruit to seed ratio. The rounder ones are ok taste wise, but are 80% pit

  8. Again, thx to all for your posts.

I just got back from the market. For now I just settled for what I could get at the wholesale market where I have bought in the past. As you are coming up the side street that the US conulate sits on, you keep going about 200 meters further from the river and it is on the left. None are quite ready to open yet and so I am not sure how good, but what they had was a mixed batch of different kinds and sizes at 45 baht per kg. Imported from Myanmar. I bought 3 kg (15 avocados mostly double size of what I bought in the US), for now to keep me going for a few days. Some of them should be ready for breakfast tomorrow and so I will let you all know how good they are tomorrow. But price wise that is even cheaper than the best price I could get in the states of about 6 baht per avocado for avos half this size. However I am much more interested in the quality of the taste rather than price, as long as the price is within reason. So all in all not bad, so far.

They also do have an abundance of passion fruit and the kind of bananas that we are more accustomed to in the states as well as many other fruits. Passion fruits were 40 baht per kg or 35 if you buy 10 kg. The purple variety, full of taste and juice, though a bit more sour than the yellow variety, which is fine by me. thumbsup.gif

    Good evening to all! wai.gif

  9. Haas type or something with high oil content and at reasonable price would be nice. I just came back from the land of avocado abundance (various parts of the US) where I was buying excellent avocados as cheaply as 6 baht per piece (as recently as two weeks ago) and almost never more than 18 per piece. And almost always they were imported. Taking care of my several avocado a day addiction was easy. thumbsup.gif Here it may be a bit tougher for a while.

I am about to head out on a search for good avos here in Chiang Mai starting with the big local fruit markets. If anyone can tell me where to find the best avos that most resemble Haas I would greatly appreciate a PM or post about this. Or if any of you folks are growing them I would love to buy yours on a wholesale scale basis when you have them. I am always making lots of avocado/coconut smoothies for myself and family and friends. clap2.gif

Thanks all for your posts and/or PMs. smile.png

  10. Just a quick note on avoado prices in the states. I just came back from 1+ years and was in both California and small town Georgia. Not US avocado season most of the time I was there and so most were imported from Mexico or points farther south. The most I paid was about 35 baht for very nice Haas type avocados but almost never paid that much. Usually I paid between 12 and 18 baht for single avocados at your typical slightly more upscale chain grocery stores like Kroger or Ralph's. But mostly I was able to buy them when the stores had an abundance of avos that were getting right to the perfect ripe point and was paying as little as 35 or 36 per bag of 6 avos. That means 6 baht per avocado (as recently as 2 weeks ago). These were not your biggest avos, nor the smallest - a bit less than the size of my fairly large fist. So I am not quite sure where the idea of 200 baht avos in the states came from. Single organic avos were about 50% more but I would often get the bags with organic in them at the same 35 baht price but only 5 of them since they were a bit bigger. BTW, my most recent understanding of avos is that you need not necessarily buy organic as no one sprays because they are naturally resistant to pests. Waste of money for the farmer to buy the chemicals.
