what the hell is a "tom"???...do u mean a tomboy?...lesbian?...and is it a question or a statement???...do u not know how to use a question mark??????????????

Tom is a common word in Thailand used by all to describe 'butch' lesbians.

Dee is the lady partner of a Tom.

I have no idea about the other guys skill level in punctuation, sorry.

  2. Live and let live.

I had two girlfriends both go into same sex relationships right after me, they were not Toms, neither were the new partners.

They were both Singaporean, and they both went to the same school together, which incidentally, also educated Annabel Chong, funny old world.

The same kind of things people do everywhere else. Hobbies. Interests. Pastimes. Reading. Music. Exploring. Exercise. Artistic endeavour.

I could go on. The point is, there's more choice in life than merely doing nothing or drinking beer and chasing girls. It's tragic that anyone would need this explaining to them.

He could get into pointless arguments with strangers on TV, that seems to be very popular.

Now, I don't go out of my way to pick fights, usually, someone will get defensive over a remark I made, and often, not even at them, go figure, and then they start with the belittling, instead of debating the issue.

Of course, I hit back twice as hard, as I was taught in the playground, so I sometimes get sent to 'solitary confinement' for a few days...

Wow loads of replies.. from the high-rollers (you'll starve to death with 700 quid)  to the more realistic..

Not sure what to think now really. My budget will increase next year i'm sure

I'm looking seriously at Chon Buri next time. Half way between Pattaya and BKK so i can easily have a day out at the beach or the city whilst living in a "cheap" rent area..

I found this site - http://www.renthub.in.th/en Loads of nice looking places under 10,000.. many of them have facebook pages that reply to messages also :D

I don't smoke and i sometimes drink at the weekend..

I like Thai food.. but sometimes crave a burger or Indian curry

I am hoping to find a good woman to settle down with but i'm not desperate (i'm 29) and i'm very picky.. she must have a job and not think of me as a ATM

Thaifreindly is a minefield and a waste of time i'll stick to more traditional methods i think.

If you're 29 then the cost of living is the least of your worries. How do you hope to stay here for any length of time without paying a motza for some sort of visa that will allow you to? BTW, I wish you the very best, you have shown a desire for something better, and you're striving toward it!

Yes another as expected response must do better. Pay your woman a bit more she might help you write a decent response. after all you couldn't expect a western woman to even look at you according to your post.

I could resort to following your supercilious, and as yet, still undefended first effort, but it's pretty piss poor, and the dull wit you are so proud of is getting tedious. Any chance of saying anything meaningful at all today? Or ever?

Why do people with spurious arguments always start their rebuttal with, "Oh here we go"? Is it an attempt to gain traction, something akin to taking a literary deep breath or is it like revving a motorbike to demonstrate its power, dunno.

    Still clueless? Figures.

Have you ever been to Thailand!

Oh here we go... WHY do you think I made the remark in the FIRST place?

I have no quarrel with guys who pay to play, I AM one, and I also get by very well with a 'mea' that does not charge like a wounded bull for the co-habitation! Didn't some other guy mention getting a sino/thai lady of means? Yeah, something like that might be close to my set-up.

But if the hat fits, wear it.

Horse crap another really well thought out reply NOT

    Hit a nerve? :D

Have another beer for the pain, and try harder than sarcasm if you want to add anything of value. I don't mind a disagreement, but bring some effort to the table.

I make that about 25,000 Bt..  is that right.. if so.. you would have a pretty spartan life here.. .  even in Isaan... not a lot of money left for honey..

Most expats pay too mutt for 'honey' because; they have to.

It's the premium the 'honey' charges for living with a male that would not, or could not, hold his own with women anywhere else, let alone back home.

So I wouldn't gloat old boy...

im not sure thats true, i think food and shopping for just about anything is higher in Pattaya. although I think it is possible to find cheap rental.

The real fact of the matter is that Thailand tourism had its heyday through the 80's, 90's and early 2000's and now it's declining. I also think the country does not help itself in welcoming long term guests,, LOS it aint!

The reasons can be debated all day but one thing that cannot be debated is the increase in cost of living. Thailand just isn't that cheap anymore. Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar are the cheap SE Asia destinations for today and they will boom over the next 5 to 10 years for sure.

Cambodia  and Myanmar are NOT cheaper than here and they are utter site holes.  numbeo.com is my evidence. as were boots on the ground there.

My 700 quid comes from various online ventures.. and is rising every month. i have a normal 9-5 job in the UK.

I hate living in the UK.. things are gonna get so much worse here in the coming years. If you come from Lithuania Pakistani or Nigeria it is fantastic.. but for me.. no

Great, another brexiteer who shafted himself vis the GBP debacle that ensued. They dislike the (mistaken) idea that blow in foreigners live better than the average local schmuck here too. you'll fit right in.

  12. so what did you say ?

    "a falang that initiated it."

That farang being you, to drunk to remember what you said. Wasn't a nice thing otherwise it wouldn't trigger someone.

Thats the problem. Smudge can't 'think' what he said would cause offence, admitting he's a poor judge of what's acceptable. Is he by chance related to the obnoxious motormouth Dueterte?

I don't give two hoots about Philippine women, but the booze is way cheaper over there, and if drinking is an important part of your lifestyle, Philippines beats Thailand hands down. And the food, Philippines beats Thailand hands down AGAIN.

Carafe of house red wine = 140 pesos in a restaurant (just over 110bht).

Wine in Thailand, even with the ridiculous tax, costs about the same as Australia. Source: numbeo website.

The old world wines are overpriced for the quality however.

Because everything in Aus is now extortionate and the export value of the A$ may as well be renamed the 'peso'. So cosidering the other prices in LOS I'm way ahead.

My leftover fridge pizza tastes great when I'm drunk too. Solution, stay inexpensively drunk in the PI and the food is amaaazing.

To generalise about the women is unfair.

I've known honeys and scummers in every nationality, but... pinays insist on disappointing me with bar change scams, or bait and switch happy hour tricks. In one place they were so relentless I lost it, and called the cops (Hong Kong) it was not seedy Wanchai, this was opposite the Intercontinental in Kowloon! (Fog Bar, be warned!)

No Thai has ever fiddled my change, even in seedy Pattaya.

I can only offer my personal experience, I do know there are ratbags everywhere, but Pinays seem to be serially scamming everywhere I meet them.

  14. The PI is an irredeemable shithole. That's why the locals have to leave to get ahead.
Thailand is not perfect but its light years ahead in all but English skills.
Im surprised nobody yet mentioned the ugly phenomenon where the pinoys/pinays just help themselves to your property, or come to visit and actually vandalise the furniture out of spite?

  15. Plus, ever increasing pointless forms indicate an 'attitude' that long-staying foreigners aren't very welcome.

The government knows as well as the ex-pats that these additional requirements aren't going to bother the criminals - which is why some of us (myself certainly) worry about the way things are going.

You're reading too mutt into this form - NOT "forms" - as I initially did- before filling it out at the airport to get my re entry stamp.

Some jobsworth wanted to 'look good' by inventing it.

His boss, who does not have to deal with it either, thought it was a good idea (these are bureaucrat minds, after all) now they're stuck with it, like we are, and they don't like it!

Its not compulsory to fill most details at all, and the guy going on about photgraphs of his condo and atm card... sounds like he needs to move to a friendlier police district, or change out from a marriage visa.

Even so... let them play their stupid games, there will be another change of guard eventually.

As The west declines, they'll see the money to be made in retirement visas, and make it more friendly, not less.

Enough money trumps EVERYTHING, the one thing expats forget here... if you can't afford here you can't afford anywhere (worth living comfortably in) so why worry?

  16. What has Prayuth said to make you think that?
    Quote please...
We all know Deuterte, has publicly called for vigilante executions, which is an invite for anyone to murder anyone they don't like, no comeback.
We all know hes called western diplomats sons of whores. Etc etc.
Give me evidence of Prayuths actual targeting farangs, I'll accept that.
    Until then quit trolling.

  17. They've not been made to repair since the Trinitron days. Throw it away.
Also forget the Japanese and Korean overpriced brands.
Chinese TCL brand is better and cheaper now. Google it.

  18. I shall give you my two cents. Thailand is definitely not the same as I first encountered it 50 years ago but where is. In addition, I am not the same. On both accounts some things are better and some are worse. It is our perception of those things that either gives us pleasure or pause. IMO Thais are still basically the same people they always were but many of us couldn't discern what tht was.

-Thais always wear a mask hiding their true feelings and the longer we are here the more we are able to unmask them- sometimes what we see is not what we like and at other times it is great.

-Thais worry about their future jut like us- but they most often keep it to themselves or suppress their feelings- a difficult concept in a relationship.

    - The cost of living is much higher for both Thais and Foreigners making both of our lives more stressful

-It is not the government per se that bothers people- it is what the government may or may not do that creates uncertainty

-The internet and social media have placed before us more of a cross section of the good, the bad and the ugly- where in the past we only were aware of the good.

-Thailand does not have that fun feeling like before because more people are poor, stressed out  and we have also grown up.

-There is no real anti foreigner feeling but as Thailand starts to enforce laws some people are having adjustment problems. The days of living dangerously are coming to an end.

In my mind it is still a good place to live but we have to let live.  Based upon what I see in my birth country of America- I have no desire to return and miss very few things. Thailand has and will always be my home but it is not for everyone.  I wish the OP well and I hope he finds his peace whether in the UK, Thailand or somewhere else.

    A measured, and thoughtful response.
Worth bumping up to the front page again.

I went through exactly what the OP went through, just last month.

One inexpensive week out of Thailand brought me to my senses fast...

    That's why I'm harping on.

Don't burn bridges, there is nowhere like this anywhere, not any of the ASEAN neighbours, and definitely not the PI.

Which is a fools paradise, with an exceptionally dangerous buffoon in charge.

That guy could declare war on all foreigners tomorrow, just based on what he says, and the way he's going... Thailand's political leadership are not that psychotic.
