Agree, go for the 5 year option. After that you will have a better idea if you want to stay in Thailand longer, you will be eligible for the retirement visa as an alternative option.
Tourist visas, exemption entries, education visa are not good options if you want to stay in Thailand longer or even if you travel frequently in/out as I did you start getting questions.
Peace of mind is the main benefit in my opinion.

The pink ID card will not replace having the passport or at least a copy to go with it. The card does not have your permit to stay date on it and that is what the authorities will want to see along will proof your passport is still valid. If they wanted to see your actual passport they can detain you until it is presented.
So may I ask what the benefit is of this pink ID card is if you still need to carry your pp? I like the idea of getting it but I can't figure out what benefits I get.

My view is that the Op's behavior is not very sophisticated to say the least. You don't inform yourself about a venue you want to visit, drive an hour only to find out that you cannot visit it and then you go online and complain about it and tell everyone what you have done. Recommend you become a bit smarter here, accept the way things are here, enjoy what you can enjoy and really become bit more 'street smart'.

I had dozens of things delivered to my home or construction site. Never had a problem. When they deliver you must sign a receipt, even small shops do that. Where did this happen?

I guess you are older, young people like selfies, it's funny....

Burning of agricultural fields takes place during the dry season of the respective region. So across Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand) it is from Dec-April and in Indonesia it is from July-Oct. Hope this helps. The actual air condition obviously depends on local climate/weather conditions. So if you have mountainous area and high pressure weather and no wind, you can get at times bad air from burning. Hope this helps.

Complaining about dual pricing won't change anything. Just wasted energy. Either accept or don't go to such places with dual pricing.

I'm with CharlieH. A dog is all you need. Burglars only target houses where no people or dogs stay.

Best option for her is to default on her loans. Don't help her out with her debt, I'm sure she will continue with getting into debt as she seems unable to manage her personal finances. Also be careful about marriage. Best not to marry her otherwise she will get you into trouble as well.

My sense is that numbers of foreigners in Thailand are up and up considerably. But it's only my personal observation over the last 5 years+. Would be interesting to see actual data from immigration.

complaining doesn't work in Thailand. It's just not a culture here that makes people respond to complaints. Best to just move on to another service provider/company if service is poor.I myself personally have experienced like at present when you complain frequently here about a problem your helpline seems to evaporate poof!! I have also read many TV members complain about this as well. A week ago last Friday a certain internet company had a wire fire and knocked out my service. I called to inquire and the service man checked it out in at the condo terminal. Things seemed OK for a few days and then the service seemed to drop off every few minutes and then come back and back and forth. It was doing this for half a day. I called last night to advise them of this and they stated a service man would appear today. I realize the day is not yet over but I am taking bets he will be a no show. I had a similar problem here with a major hospital. They could not find a EDC terminal for my CC although the bank assured me they had one as did the hospital administration. It was a terminal tha spit out a receipt to sign which works well in all retail outlets. Ran into a dead end with the head cashier she would not even go into the cashiers section and check personally. I would like other peoples opinions observations just a friendly discussion not a battle Royale.

One of the things I have learned is that complaining, moaning etc doesn't help in Thailand. Best to find alternative options and move on. If Chiang Mai immigration is bad, see if you can go to another office in a different province or use an agent. As I mentioned, I use the Khon Kaen office and it is really like day and night compared to Chiang Mai. And as I read on here, there are many other provinces providing equally as good of a service like Khon Kaen. So plenty of options.

I used to do everything in Chiang Mai before but since I've did one extension in Khon Kaen, I do now all my Immigration matters in Khon Kaen. Literally no waiting, staff help with copying all the relevant things and completing the form with you. In/Out for an extension in 30 mins and no need to queue early, you can come normal business hours and you get helped right away. So my official address is now in Khon Kaen.

sorry one more question. Planning to do a border run to Nong Khai to active my 2nd entry of my Tourist visa. When I exit Thai immigration at Thai-Laos Friendshipbridge, can I go over to the entry side of Thai immigration right away or do I actually have to enter Laos? Just asking because I have no interest in spending time in Laos, just need to activate my 2nd entry.

@TheCruncher: So salaries for experienced Thai construction workers, whether around Bangkok, Rayong or other areas in Thailand are around 400 baht per day. 500 baht per day is already a specialist with some special skills. So even if you hire more expensive construction workers at 500 baht per day, that still only makes you 15k per month. Foreign construction workers get somewhere around 250-300 baht per day.
Hope that helps. There are no construction workers making 30k per month.Robert, as I said, time to spend some time in Thailand.
Many skilled construction workers make 1500 - 2000 Baht a day for at least the past 4 years.
Even a rice picker will not come for less than 400 Baht anymore these days, and you know what you got then.
I'm giving up. Your numbers are complete rubbish. And by the way a normal worker at a rice mill anywhere in Thailand gets 300 baht per day. That's it.

There is no middle class here in Thailand, So the rich get richer by exploiting the poor. probably the same in any Country, But there is little protection in thailand for workers,
What about all the Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Accountants, Journalists, middle and senior management in large companies, the list
goes on. There is an increasing middle class in Thailand. The village I live in most certainly is not Hi So but would say the majority are
middle class. House prices between 4.5 and 7 million. There are loads of similar villages all around me. Ridiculous statement.
Maybe what you call middle class is different to me, and many others,
what do you (or many others as you claim) consider middle class and why do you think it is inexistent in Thailand? And tell me again why you claim a construction worker makes 30k and what is the link between that claim of inflated salary to a non-existent middle class?
-
a construction worker makes about 400 baht per day. So if he works without a day off he can make maybe 12k per month. Not more. And they don't belong to the middle class. I don't understand what you are trying to say. In the previous post you say there is no middle class and now you claim a construction worker makes 30k per month? What are you trying to say?
no middle class in Thailand? Say families earning between 30k and 200k per month I would consider middle class here. And this group has been growing steadily over the last 20 years and still keeps growing. There is no middle class here in Thailand, So the rich get richer by exploiting the poor. probably the same in any Country, But there is little protection in thailand for workers,
30K is the average for a Thai builder now , I would say thats not a lot of money now, dont forget the rich money threshold has risen too, along with the price of food,So really it's relevant.

In Asia in general most rich people used to live in poverty before and became rich through their business. Whereas in Europe most rich people have inherited their wealth. Behaviour is also very different. Rich people in Asia tend to take more risks when investing, they seek opportunities to make more money whereas rich people in Europe tend to be risk-averse and focus on wealth preservation.

well based on my experience I would not go to the Zurich consulate. But maybe it was just me. I tried to obtain a single entry tourist visa last July from the Zurich consulate and was refused. I had all papers prepared, including flight documents in/out country etc but the lady wouldn't even look at it. She looked at my passport and saw I had many exempt entry stamps (although never a tourist visa before) and she determined that I'm not a tourist. She explained to me that a tourist would be someone that works in Switzerland and maybe spends 1-2 weeks in Thailand on holiday and then returns. I tried to explain that for a 1-2 week holiday in Thailand you wouldn't need a tourist visa as a Swiss citizen but she wouldn't listen. She said I could try it with their embassy in Bern which I didn't do, simply didn't have the time to travel there to possibly be refused as well. I left it at that and got a tourist visa in Vientiane in Laos.

ok. thanks for the clarification.

ok thanks for the answers. One more question. Can I get a re-entry permit if I leave the country during the stay of the 2nd entry of my visa in order not to loose it?

Not sure what the law exactly requires, but common sense would be to only report it once. Certainly what I have done. Sometimes here I wouldn't overly worry about such things, worst case is they potentially could fine your wife should they deem it insufficient.
