  1. Hello,

I am moving from a green zone in the Northeast to Hua Hin early February (which might see the restrictions ease anyway) but I was told I need a travel document regarding necessity which I can get from the village head, etc....Anyone know anything about the doc? For example, what are considered vallid reasons, etc...

    Thank you.

When no real effort is being made to improve the system, improve the proficiency of the teachers, or the methods, nor to use the outside world as any kind of gauge, comparison, or resource, then you fall backwards. On top of that the schools here seem to instill a lack of confidence, a feeling of inferiority on the part of the students, and a continuation of the tribal mentality of obedience, at all costs.

I was hanging out with a friend the other day. Her son is about 12. Good kid. Speaks some english. He is in a sailing club, and his mom is nearly fluent in english, so he picks up alot there too, and seems to take what he learns in school seriously. I told him he was a smart kid. He shook his head no. I asked him why do you say no? He did not have an answer. I asked him, have any of your teachers ever told you, that you were smart? He said never, ever. The teachers seem reluctant to praise the kids, and give them confidence, and this would appear to have an extremely corrosive effect on society.

Is the educational system here deliberately inferior, one might ask?

This is it. The culture is creating failure. It appears in many ways- all mentioned in this thread. It can''t be easily solved because it requires a core change in the culture from small things like the wai to big things like the quality of unis....

  3. This:  public will be assisting each subdistrict in the country, by promoting jobs, community-based tourism, environmental conservation, and strengthening of community enterprises.

Does this: The campaign is expected to create 60,000 jobs, and involve some 80 universities, that will participate in the integration of knowledge and local wisdom, to effectively solve local issues.

Debacle. Unless they're just basically handing out that money for whatever.

  4. If you are starting fresh there are better places. If you are over 50 and already have some connections here it's still better than the west, currently. The economic turbulence should create some more opps too.

  5. I have been teaching here for many years now, but only at universities. The high paying unis require a lot of time and effort. I was teaching 4 or 5 classes per semester to smart, demanding students. So, big money and a lot of work. Also, have worked for Thai unis that pay the usual 30k. But, it's much easier. Still teaching 4 or 5 classes, but the content is so simplistic and the students so dull it's quite easy. Have huge amounts of time to pursue other goals. You can earn money elsewhere if that's what you want to do or write books or paint, chase girls, whatever you want.

Learning English is really a skill, not an academic subject for lectures, etc...You practice a lot and must have a serious desire to do it. There is an entrenched cabal of older Thai English professors with huge egos at the government unis who protect their systems and ideas at any cost. These older profs, frankly, do not deserve their positions because of their poor skills, very outdated thinking, and superior attitudes. They're very sensitive, I have imagined, because they must truly know they're imposters. The younger Thai profs seem very capable and proficient and can't get a damn thing done and hardly want to bc it's like going into a war.
