Furthermore, the driver of the truck has told police that he was not at fault so the case is set to go to Thai court, which could take months or even years before an outcome is determined.

Sounds a bit weird. Isn't it up to the police to decide who was at fault?

The police are Thai, the sugar cane truck driver is Thai : case already decided.

Yes yes, and this is Thai Visa so let's not pass a golden occasion to make another absurd Thai-Buddhism-Bashing comment.

    But its true.

Lord Buddha would be totally pissed off if he could see what his

    teachings have been turned into.

Also not one week now goes by now,  with out some new low committed by one

    of the saffron boys.

He would indeed, but you missed my point.

My point was that in EVERY religion around the world, the original teaching and intention are now being distorted beyond recognition and all the self-appointed 'representatives of God on earth' commit all manners of abuse, from mild to wild.

Making it sound like the problem is limited to Thai-Buddhism is to miss the bigger picture and to stoop to Thai bashing, of which there is far too much on this website, and says more about expats than it does about this country.

Stealing from a church or wat is about as low as you can go as a common thief.

Spare  the rod spoil the child.

Never mind that churches and temples of every single religion are the greatest thieves of all, as they rob people not only of their money but of their common sense and worst of all, their genuine spiritual thirst, the one that makes every human being wonder, from a very early age, why he/she is on earth, what life and death mean, if they actually mean something etc ...

Police General Srivara told the group that the law had only one standard under which rich and poor people were treated equally. 30 years ago the establishment could spout this bullshit, but in the modern world, thanks to social media, it's impossible to hide all the favoritism given to HiSo PRICKS and people with "connections". :post-4641-1156693976:

Hello Merlin, you are absolutely right to point out that nowadays, with the Internet, a lot of dirt commited by rich and influential people is more easily exposed to the public light. But the depressing question that comes to mind immediately is... does it actually yield significant results ?

The problem is not limited to Siam, and that must be kept in mind at all times, but since this Forum is here in Thailand, let's ask ourselves if media outrage has significantly helped real justice in the following cases (to name but a few of the most recent and famous ones) or not :

    - The Redbull heir case

    - The 25 wristwatches case

    - Bringing Thaksin to justice for abusing his position to rake billions of baht

    - Finding the real murderer(s) in the Koh Tao case

    - Bringing the Flying Saucer 'Monk' to justice

    ... etc.

To close on a lighter note, I love these glasses of yours. Do they make them for boys too ?

Is there any branch of Thai society that is immune from such corruption?  Chinese justice would kill and cure this greed.

Kill, yes. Cure ? In your dreams.

Corruption in China is thriving. It's a giant country with a giant corruption problem, the source of which is deeply ingrained in the DNA of the people, who see nepotism, embezzling etc. as perfectly normal. The communists didn't change that. Thailand has exactly the same approach for the simple reason that Thailand's people stem from the same culture.

In China (and Vietnam), every now and then some big shot is publicly executed for corruption. It's all for show, and totally useless - if a tree is infested all over by some vicious mushroom, cutting off one branch won't solve the problem.

He said that while some people were forced into the sex trade due to poverty, many others did it through choice.

“Some people love expensive goods, but they don’t have the money, so they resorted to the easy means to earn quick money,” he said.

    is that what Prawit did?

    Brilliant line ! :cheesy:

It reminds me of another line by Coluche - one of the greatest French stand up comedians ever.

He was talking about show business and how people reach the top : "they say you can't get anywhere in showbusiness unless you bend over... bullsh*t ! I didn't sleep with anyone"

    Here's a photo of him :

I'm not a big fan of Prayuth but this time he deserves an applause for stating the truth!

I agree with you here, and in all fairness, it should also be pointed out that in Western countries, 'occasional prostitution' is on the rise, as young people are brainwashed into thinking that possessing the latest Iphone is more important than knowing who Van Gogh, Vivaldi and Voltaire were (and that's just a trio of Vs !).

So called 'social' apps are massively hijacked for weekend prostitution, and the kids seem less and less concerned about the morality of it all.

But then again, these kids are what our society makes them, so before we throw stones at the little sluts, lets follow the money trail, the one that leads to the real pimps...

No kidding, now it's time for britain to do the same .  Oops , they run the world

Errr... you're making a little mistake here with the tense : it's ran. They ran the world.

I know a lot of British expats here still haven't quite realized that Queen V. is now very very dead. Unless of course she's on that island with Elvis Presley, Lady Di, 'reverend' Moon, Michael Jackson, Gandhi and a few others. Perhaps you live there as well ?

Good points and more crucial than the thread issue. Good job you don't live next door . . . we'd be talking all night!

 Sawang Daen Din is near Sakhon Nakhon right ? I love how you rename it. I live in Pattaya Ting Tong myself, and here I have yet to find an expat who would discuss such issues all night long... Not exactly a cultural destination here, not to make too fine a point on it...

I guess I made the wrong choice (but I'm stuck with it for the time being), although I do love the sea air, the easy-to-reach facilities & restaurants, and places like Koh Larn which is still nice in spite of the tremendous efforts put in by the locals and the tourists (especially Chinese and Russian, I hate to say) to deface it.

Sorry guys and mods, I know this is waaaaay off the actual thread topic, lol.

Agreed ... understood and acknowledged ... still, that's life until governments, scientists, doctors and judicial branches all do their jobs without monetized mindsets and corporate bias eh?

I understand what you mean. Well, here's a quote from a book I just read, by Peter Carey (the title is Amnesia) :

"(...) she was born into the Anthropocene age and easily saw that the enemy was not one nation state but a cloud of companies, corporations, contractors, statutory bodies whose survival meant the degradation of water, soil, life itself."

Chilling and very well summarized, wouldn't you say ?

I wonder if your comment is stupid and xenophobic or just stupid.

I don't know what mountain you come from, Jack, but I guess it's the kind where trolls, goblins and future-expats-in-Thailand are born. Hate, despise and mock, that's the rallying motto of these brave folks.

There are many toxins affecting the farmers, household and otherwise. An inordinate number of cancer cases occur in rural areas as well.  This is not an infectious disease, it is a post-modern man-made holocaust. Add to this stress, alcohol, tobacco and 7/11, and one makes catastrophe. Such is life eh?

    Such is life ?

I'd say such is a world where corporations like Monsanto (biotechnologies) have a turnover that's bigger than countries such as Iceland, Guinea, Rwanda, Kirghiztan or Mongolia... And Monsanto, giant that it is,  is 'only' 1/3rd of Nestlé (agri-food industry) and 1/7th of BASF (chemicals, approx 100 billion dollars pr year).

I strongly recommend reading Noam Chomsky's book "Who Rules the World?" .... and the answer is not life.

My Mom & Pop shop is getting too clever! They will sell you alcohol on any prohibited day, but will charge 5 baht a bottle extra as a "risk factor". I wonder if the local BiB, who practically consider the shop as their office, pay the "risk factor" as well?

I'd venture to suggest that peeeeerhaps the local BiB actually pocket the 'risk factor' ...:partytime2:
