  1. Hey all,

Where can i find a hotel or place to crash for a half day or 6-8 hours in bkk like sukhumvit or petchburi, siam area ???

Reason is im coming over from Nakhon in the morning, shopping a little bit and leave at midnight to catch my plane to europe.

    Anyone have a suggestion ?

    Thx in advance

    Scottbiker

You might try the Business Inn on Sukhumvit Soi 11/1 (not far from the Nana Skytrain stop.) They have "no window" rooms for 600 baht if you reserve one ahead of time. Depending on what time you check in in the morning, closer to noon the better, they might be able to book you a room.

I arrive there after 1 in the morning from the U.S. on NWA. This may give them 2 bookings for the same room. Email them at:

[email protected] and ask for the 600 baht room.

  2. My passport was recently stolen either in Ban Phe or Koh Samet, I'm not sure. I can't figure out why anyone would have done it. They left my I-Pod, which is kind of worrisome. A couple of Thais I think were telling me that someone could change the picture and use the passport as their own. Anyway, I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone as to what I need to do. Can anyone tell me straight up where to go? I'm American and I see that the US embassy is in Bangkok. Is that where I need to go? What will be required of me? Thanks so much for your help.

Of course you have a copy of your passport information page so that you have your old passport number - right?

If you still need your (missing) passport number your hotel might have it recorded on the information form you fill out at the front desk.

Better get hot on replacing your old passport if you have a departure coming up pretty soon! Missing your flight because your passport is missing could be expensive.

    Good luck!

  3. Upon our return to BKK, we'll be staying one night out at Suk Soi 57. How much time should we allow for the taxi to the airport? We'll be leaving around 4:30AM and we'll want to take the expressway.

For international flights be at the airport 2 hours before departure time and allow about a half hour for a taxi ride. When I take the slow city bus from On Nut, (during the daytime) going the long way, with lots of stops - the ride is still only around only 40 or so minutes. A half hour should be okay for the meter taxi ride early in the morning.

  4. ^^^^Bummer....I feel your loss.

Well we can blame the Brits and the Yanks for this. Another success for the extremists. :o

I prefer to put the blame on MUSLIM TERRORISTS who intend to blow up airplanes and cause as many deaths as possible!

I'll take "Brit" or "Yank" extremists any day over Muslim Extremists! A few years ago who would have thought some Muslim fool would try to blow up an airplane with a "shoe bomb?" It is not far-fetched to think that a terrorist would try to smuggle a whiskey bottle full of some sort of "volatile fluid" on board a plane, so he can kill everyone, and go on his way to paradise!

These security arrangements are for the safety of the passengers who fly these aircraft - a little inconvenience is better than being blown up in little pieces! Better safe now than sorry later!

  5. So, my girlfriend, in another of her strokes of genius tried to flush uneaten potatoes down the toilet. Needless to say it got badly backed up :o . The building handymen spent a good two hours with a plunger and long hose, to no avail.

I went to Lotus and bought some drano (expensive stuff!) but when I got home, realized the small warning on the back saying not to use for toilets (maybe not good for porcelain?).

What product should I buy to fix this most annoying problem?

    Thnx for any help

If you are in a apartment building and only your toilet is affected then you might be able to reach the clog with a snake drain un-clogger. Something around 10 feet long might work. A cheap snake would probably be under 200 baht. (You can always keep the snake for next time, since you might have said no potatoes any more - this doesn't rule out other foods!)

Now, if other apartments have plumbing problems then you will need a much longer snake and perhaps a professional plumber. If no water at all passes through then you really have a huge clog - did the lady dump a whole pot full down the drain?

Break down and buy a refrigerator and tell your girlfriend to save her left overs in it. Oh yeah, you might have some sort of cut out where you can run the snake in the other direction toward your toilet and free the clog from that way.

  6. Im in Pattaya for 4 weeks but I have to work off the internet while Im here. I am using dial up at th emomment in my rented house but its painfully slow. I have been to a few internet cafes but they are not much better. Does anyone know of an internet shop in Pattaya that has 2Mbs plus speed. I dont mind paying whatever it costs.

PS I have a wifi laptop so if there are any bars which are fast count them in too.

    Cheers,

    Rob.

I like the WinnerInn Hotel on Soi Buakhaw, cheap internet price of 30 baht per hour and wifi too!

Even the cheap Honey Inn on Soi Honey Inn has free wifi that you can access from their coffee shop.

Right across the street from the Tops supermarket (Pattaya 2nd and Central,) in the little mall nearest the bank, is a nice internet shop. The price for that internet shop is 40 baht per hour and the computers are in pretty good shape.

  7. I got this message on the top of my Internet Explorer window this morning (It actually says Internet Explorer - Hacked by Godzilla)

What does this mean? Is it a viris? I have AVAST running and up to date, as well as AdAware SE, and use window's firewall.

Only thing I can think of this that my wife brings her thumb drive home from work.

Can I get rid of it?

    Thanks

Returned from Thailand last night. I used my flash drive a lot when I was there. The flash drive was bug free when I left home. Ran my flash drive through Norton and a virus came up. Norton Anti Virus, on my Mac couldn't repair it so it put the virus in quarantine, (what ever that means.) Thought the name was UBS Bodgila on the read out. Could be Godzila or Dogzila.

I have a lot of stuff with a Firefox home page, almost like having regular computer with me when I am in internet shops.

Ran the flash drive through Norton on my laptop PC and again on the Mac and nothing shows up anymore.

  8. I have a Linksys WRT54G v5. I use it with a T43p IBM. The setup was very easy and everywhere inside the house and even outside the house the computer says it is a very strong signal. I have a Thai house.

The router itself is kind of cheap looking and has two antennas but it works great. Had I seen it outside the box, I would have chosen another brand. :o

I will put my vote in for Linksys (my neighbor's Linksys!) My house is around 100 feet from my neighbor's router and through 2 or 3 walls - my internet reception is pretty good using HIS router. He doesn't care if I have free internet, so I make out okay!

  9. Do Thai immigration officials count actual days in Thailand or the number of 30 day entry stamps? When you show up at the airport and get a 30 day stamp but only stay in Thailand for 15 days, what counts towards the max limit in 6 months, the 30 day stamp or the actual amount used?

When I am in the Philippines or somewhere else in Asia, I may use some frequent flyer miles to hop over to Thailand for a week or two - but not use the full 30 days - what are the Thai officials using for the total?

Now that some time has passed since the laws changed, I am looking for some feedback on this type of situation.

    Thank you.

  10. I have to move apartment very soon too.

Does anyone know where I can get some flat packed cardboard boxes? (I've got alot of crap)

    Sorry to hijack the thread...

    :o

Times when I need a carton I just ask a local store. Even Tops gave me some one time. Those stores usually break them down anyway to make it easier to dispose of them.

  11. Got any other recommendations for Laundry services. Mainly for large items such as Bed sheets and towels etc...

Any laundry that has a washer and dryer should be able to help you (same as in your house back home.)

The same laundry on Sukhumvit Soi 8 from one of the previous posts ought to be okay.

  12. Coming to thailand and I need to know what serial numbers and or years of $100 bills are no good for exhanging into baht??? Regards, BD

I can't remember ever being turned down when exchanging $100 bills for Thai Baht, guess I just didn't have any of the questionable bills. When I pick up my cash from my home town bank I tell the clerk to ONLY give me the newer $100 bills with the the "big head" on them. They seem to work okay for me.

(For Thailand, I prefer travellers checks, especially because I get them commission free from my credit union.)

  13. if i may , mitsubishi electric , only can be bought from mitsubidhi shop , they will do the fitting , more expensive as other unit !

    Heard that M/ELECTRIC are good.

What size air con do I need for a bedroom 3 meters by 3 meters?

Also does the size of small attachment next to the compressor [outside] have any significance on the running of the air con?

    Thanks.

The bedroom in my house is about the same size, I get by with a 5800 BTU window unit without any problems. Unless you plan to have 3 or 4 people in your room all the time - 7000 BTU ought to be more than okay.

  14. I wanna ride a horse these days so bad.

Anyone knows where in Bkk or near Bkk and how much does it cost?

    URGENT!

Thanks for any info in advance.

This is a long shot, sort of! Someone else may have more information on this.

In Pattaya, on Pattaya-Naklua Road, with the Dolphin at your back, on the left side, there is a hotel called Marina Inn Bungalow. They have a small stable there. I was told that they rent the horses out for rides. Don't know for sure. Look for the statue of a horse outside the hotel/stable area.

    Marina Inn Bungalo, 284/54 Pattaya-Naklua Road. Tel. (038) 225134, 225865, 225866.

  15. How do I get from Korat to the new airport by bus. Used to be able to take the express/tour bus from Korat and have them drop me off at Don Muang. Is there anything similiar at the new airport? Or do I have to go to Don Muang and take a taxi to the new airport?

    Thanks....

    Ski

There is a bus station at the airport their "Transportation Center."

I have a (paper) schedule that shows busses stopping at and leaving from the new airport to Nakhonratchasima, 263 km for 189 baht.

Looks like two departures matching 2 arrivals. The bus company that owns the bus is the "THE TRANSPORT CO., LTD."

Check with the bus company at Korat and see what they say.

  16. I need 2 leads for my x box, the power cable along with the cable that goes into the TV.

Anyone know where I can get them from in BKK?

    Thanks in advance!

Two places come to mind. MBK and Pantip Plaza.

MBK is located right at a Skytrain stop.

Pantip plaza is on New Phetchburi Road.

  17. You wrote: "Unless I have misunderstood I also understand that if you want to get a local bus into town you first have to get a shuttle bus from the airport to the local bus stand and then get the bus. Not very helpful if you have plenty of baggage and are new in town."

    *

Yes this is true. There is a free shuttle bus that takes you to the Transportation Center, about a 5 to 7 minute ride. This new bus terminal is pretty good. After you see how many destinations these busses go to you will see how impractical it would to have all of these busses making a pass past the terminal.

I counted at least 15 different busses for destinations to many cities/towns and provinces in Thailand. The bus I used to get to Sukhumvit was the #552, it stops at the On Nut Skytrain stop. More bus destinations planned for the future, so the lady at the Pattaya window told me.

There is an Express Bus that stops directly at the terminal. This Express Bus is like the old Airport Bus that used to leave DM. The price was first quoted to be 150 baht, later posts said now it is 120 baht for the ride. I never used this bus - YET! Two people in a meter taxi, after the 50 baht sign-up fee, may be able to get into town cheaper than the much slower Express Bus.

  18. Does anyone know where I can get a punch bag in Pattaya.

It is only to hang on my drive, so doesn't need to be a professional thing.

I seem to remember seeing one somewhere but can't remember where.

There is a boxing equipment supply shop on Pattaya 2nd Road, between Soi Honey Inn and Soi Skawbeach.

  19. For me, personally, the south, Hua Hin, Surat Thani would be best (Hua Hin if I can convince my husband to pick me up, Surat if I can't :o)

Be careful tho, you may find yourself inundated with requests!

I couldn't find a link to that bus schedule. Busses out of that airport location is something new.

Hua Hin and Surat Thani are not on this list, right now - I was told that they may add new bus runs from this place in the future.

Chonburi, Rayong, Trat, Pattaya and Nongkhai are on the list.

Below are some additional links to other bus stations.

  20. If you are coming to Bangkok by train from the northeast what station is best get out and catch some transport to the airport?

Already I am missing Don Muang.

    Roger in Surin

If your train has Hua-lumpong for a final stop, you can get off there and take the subway to Sukhumvit Road. There is a Skytrain stop at this Sukhumvit Road stop (Asok.) At the Asok Skytrain stop you have a couple choices, you can take a meter taxi from that point directly to the airport, only pay the meter price - bargaining the price will cost more.

A second choice, if you are counting pennies, is to take the Skytrain to the On Nut Skytrain stop (maybe 15 baht.) At the On Nut Skytrain stop, across the street from the Lotus Tesco store, you can take city bus number 552 (for 35 baht) to the airport transportation center, and a free shuttle from there to the terminal.

You can also take a taxi direct from the train station. There may be other faster ways from the train station, but this works.

  21. A few posters have mentioned that busses leave directly from the new airport to various provinces (not bangkok).

Is there a website that lists these and their schedules? Or do you have a printed schedule you could post?

I have a printed schedule that I picked up when I was at the airport transportation center. What town are you interested in? I counted 13 cities/provinces and 2 places in Bangkok.

  22. i,m arriving on a tuesday evening at 5.30pm any idea how long to nana sky train station at this time ! i need to be at the bar at the corner of Soi 7 as soon as possible so i can take in the atmosphere and proceed to get drunk --cheers guys :o

P.S anybody in town 31/10 is welcome to join me!! :D

I used the free shuttle bus to take me to the airport "transportation center" (took 5-8 minutes.) At the transportation center I used city bus #552 to take me to the On Nut Skytrain stop (Lotus Tesco stop) took about an hour. From there to the Nana stop is another 10 - 14 minutes. The bus I used was around the 5 to 6 pm time frame.

  23. is it possible to fly to khon kaen from Suvarnabhumi? if so which airline is the best and cheapest to use any info cost websites would be appriciated thanks :o

I know that you asked about airline service, but there is also a bus that is scheduled to leave directly from the transportation center to Khonkaen.

According to the schedule I have, the Khonkaen bus is 311 baht and the ride is 6.7 hours.

I've used long distance busses in Thailand, usually part way through the trip the bus will stop for a (small) free meal, sometimes you get free snacks and water on the bus. Compared to Europe and the U.S. even without any food or snacks, these bus rides are a good deal.

  24. Anyone know if there is a shop where I can buy hand made shoes specifically made for me?

    Ta

Custom made shoes, boots, jackets, etc. from the Siam Bootery on Sukhumvit Road. They are located right where Soi 19 meets with Sukhumvit. Their card says "all orders are specially handmade!"

Never bought anything from them, expensive handmade shoes is of no interest to me. Here is an e-mail address from their card: [email protected], their telephone number is (66) 0-2229-4413-4, fax (66) 0-2229-4606.

    Good luck.
