  1. Start using Dropbox for everything.

If that works, switch to it full time. Don't turn off your provider services until you know the replacement works.

Dropbox does backups and so on but you can also get a remote backup service to be doubly safe. Then you need some decent internal organization so it doesn't become a whole mess of folders. I always either keep a project-based or a time based folder structure.

I don't know about Google drive - google email services are awesome, every startup I have worked for sets up their emails with them. It's cheap, has 100% uptime (or close to) and is spam free.

Dropbox - my mom uses it to organize a small art festival. She loves it. She is also utterly clueless about anything computer, and now nearly 70 years old. If she can manage Dropbox, I have faith that you can, too wink.png

There are many services like Dropbox, and some are cheaper, others give you more free space; but of the ones I've tried, none have come close to the overall ease of use and functionality that Dropbox has. Files sync instantly. You can always "undelete" files, or even look at the history of changes in case somebody made a mistake and deleted stuff in an existing document (that would be yours truly). It's awesome.

As for all the comments about setting up your own server, getting a hosted service, setting up a NAS - yes to all that if you want to pay for "IT management". If you don't want to pay for IT management, don't do that.

I consult for a small web company with 4 full time employees and anywhere from 10 - 20 contractors. They use Dropbox, Slack, Google email, Github. No IT expenses. I also consult for a large fortune 500 corporation with a huge IT department and a complex mess of Windows-based IT services. The efficiency of the IT-less stack is staggeringly higher than all that garbage enterprise software the large corporation is using. Not because of the IT personell, more because the web services are just so much better at everything.

Viruses. I guess people still use windows. Sigh. Oh, well. I am always surprised at this as all professional computer people I know use Macs or Linux - e.g. all the web developers, client side devs, programmers. designers. Mac is the easiest way to avoid viruses. Windows is just a mess, hard to really keep safe unless the employees know what they're doing. I never had a virus on my Windows system, and never used AV software either - I just avoided fishy websites, used Firefox/Chrome only (no IE), and ran email through gmail which removes virus attachments (and mostly places those email in the spam to begin with so I never even see them). Also no flash etc. These days no Java.

  2. Saw one at Kawa Chiang Mai. Was impressed by the looks - it has some modern touches, somewhere in-between a classic cruiser and a Diavel.

Thai marketing is ridiculous (see website). They say it's for women and newbs. Hahaha. Why not market it as light, cheap, sensible cruiser? That's what it looks like to me anyways... it's not as cool as the Vulcan or the star bolt but it's also way cheaper. The cruiser for people who just want a motorcycle to tool around on, who do not need the loudest, heaviest chunk of metal to announce their manliness.

  3. Re-issuing a license on return to CA isn't that hard, and isn't that expensive. The license is lost, what's the point of whining about it now?

Things happen when you go on a trip... also it was a bit silly to expect a car license from California to be accepted for riding a motorbike. That made no sense. Did you expect Thai cops to know about the 150cc bike rule? Are they a wandering encyclopedia on what is allowed on what sort of license all over the world? Do Thai cops receive special training on international driving licenses? ..... bummer they managed to actually lose the license - that's a bit rich. But what's done is done, just pretend you lost your wallet somewhere, could happen too right...

  4. There's actually a ton of new stuff - all this makes for a better bike. Particularly like the hard saddle bags (is the "LT" model sold in Thailand?); and stronger engine and better range thanks to more tank capacity are both great. Better windshield too, that was sorely needed. Getting used to the look - it's... OK.

  5. Just hit the 20,000 km mark today. Still on the original tyres, brake pads and very durable chain. I go over a lot of potholed roads and for a bike of that weight it handles well and puts up with the abuse. Another design, production and QC success from Honda. I was going to get rid of it but I can't justify selling it at the moment. I might have to have 3 bikes.

Good to hear the 500 lives up to Honda expectations.

Just heard from an owner of the CB300 who's had lots of issues - bad workmanship and bad service.

  6. From what we can see the 2015 Fortuner looks like yet another facelift.

I'm somewhat amazed by this car. I bought a Fortuner now nearly 8 years ago. Walked into the dealership last week to check out the 2014 model. Open the door. Everything looks the same. Hold on, some changes - right that model doesn't have the faux wood trim, and isn't quite as nice as my now positively ancient top end model. No reason to upgrade.

In all that time Toyota has made the turbo a little better, and I think the suspension might have seen a small improvement too?! They're basically selling the same car for 8 years.

Should they decide to actually make a new 2015 model I'll probably get it. No complaints, great car.

  7. Regarding Ducati gearbox and false neutrals: Happened to me while breaking in the Hypermotard - scary and / or annoying. Just go for really crisp, hard shifting and it won't happen. Post break-in it almost never happens anymore - maybe once in the last 5 months or so.

As for being a premium bike - that gets you premium components and great designs. But a Honda is better quality - that's the way it is. Ducati is a lot better than it used to be, and they seem to have a very clear vision of going towards more day to day usable bikes, rather than being the lightest or fastest or craziest. But they're not a Japanese bike.

And yeah Thai Ducs are most certainly unrestricted.

  8. Bit of a missed opportunity - the Versys front was never really pretty but this is not an improvement; looks like they just stuck the Ninja 650 front on the bike?!

More HP should make a big difference though - the Versys to me just needed a tiny bit more power, and this might just be that tiny additional bit. Still a great bike of course. I miss her :)

  9. One of my students already has one. Showed it to me last week. Pretty snazzy. Coolest part was the fingerprint recognition. Fast as lightning.

It's a big deal. I am amazed how fast and accurate the fingerprint sensor is. This is the end of passwords, people. Apple uses the fingerprint instead of a password for App store and iTunes store purchases; and for Apple Pay.

In the future you'll use your fingerprint for any app that requires a login. Because if the implementation is safe enough to protect your money, it's also going to be safe enough for a random app login.

And before anyone says the 5S had a fingerprint sensor - yes but it didn't have the crypto chip that enables secure authentication. So this is new.

  10. I am constantly amazed at people that go to their phone store every day, or check online daily, or state they will stay up all night to get the first one. People, it is a phone. Contrary to what you think, it will not double the size of your penis.

In the perception of certain ladies, it certainly does... just like any other status symbol

That aside, it's also really useful; the large phone trend is definitely a recognition of the fact that phones are the new computers. There are many people who don't have a computer but they have a phone, and it can do pretty much everything a computer would do for them.

And then there are more and more people who have a computer but find they never use it anymore because they can do things better and easier on the phone. There's very little I do on my computer these days outside of work.

Today I mail-odered some stuff from a seller via the line app, paid with my mobile banking app (K bank, brilliant), sent the transaction receipt via Line. Once I was done I was like... whoa... this wasn't just possible... this was actually much easier and better than doing the same thing on a PC!

  11. I ordered my 5S on the TH Apple website on launch day. Delivered by DHL within 7 days from Singapore.Apple warranty is worldwide. Stay up and order early. I am

    That's what I'd do.

Avoid the launch chaos with the carriers and get it direct from Apple. In the past the carriers were also more expensive than the Apple store, unless you signed up for a plan and got a small discount.

Thanks to various delays in shipping I only got mine yesterday, sent from the USA; but at this point, I'd wait for the Thai launch, unless you're traveling to HK or SG anyway.

  12. Just to throw in an Idea, Which i did with my old white macbook, was to take out the CD drive and replace with a HDD caddy/adapter - this was a 500GB magnetic. I then put a 128GB in the original drive location.

On the OS level, i remounted /Users to be on the 500GB - so the OS and things like /Applications flew, and I still had the storage for my iTunes and iPhoto library.....

I, on the other hand, symlinked my ~/Music and ~/Movies directories to the HDD, as well as any other not-needed large folders.

I wouldn't recommend it though as I ended up having to tinker a lot more than I wanted.

The benefit was I had my own user folder on the SSD, as well as all work related folders, and the OS and /Applications, and all on an 80GB SSD. System was and actually still is really fast.

I also had to enable TRIM support via a 3rd party tool.

  13. The point I was making was , if it is such an important patch / update , why wasn't it presented to us through our system ?

    Thanks for the link Rubber.

There is no access to the Bash shell from the outside, by default. So Mac users aren't affected at all, unless you did something to your system to enable remote login. Or, more likely, you turned on web sharing to serve websites.

I kind of stopped reading at that point. But if somebody can explain why (A) this can happen at all and (B) why it's not considered primarily a bug in the Apache web server, I'd be grateful.

On a normal system, you can't access the command shell from the outside, except via SSH. SSH is secure. It has not been breached. So, nobody should be able to access my bash shell at all.

On an Apache webserver, apparently Apache was routing some (all?) things through the command shell. And Apache could be attacked to route arbitrary things through the command shell (presumably with non-root rights, but that's where the bug came in, it would allow you, presumably, to escalate rights).

I'd consider this a major security flaw in Apache if true. Apache should have no business routing anything through the command shell of all things. That's like routing commands through a full stack programming environment, with nearly unlimited attack points.

  14. I cant see you would be able to make even 20B on each phone Apple is pretty much the same price everywhere, any Thai in Thailand if they can afford 30,000 plus for a phone wont be buying it in an MBK stall.

I did manage to get my ipad2 $AU50 cheaper there when i bought in Thailand but that was due to currency's rapid movement up at the time.

They are selling on facebook for 50k for the 6 and 100k for the 6+

Just because somebody is asking that much doesn't mean there's somebody paying that much.

For that you could send your man-servant to HK and let him get some iPhones there, and come back, and still save some money. Just to say, the prices just don't make sense.

The usual once the grey market has settled is that the iPhones are sold here for a BHT 3,000 markup vs. HK. Very efficient grey market!

  15. Probably best to go for a looooooong weekend ride... keeping that beauty under 7k must be killing you... biggrin.png

Gorgeous bike & positively surprised to hear there are no heat issues!

PS: FYI 501s are never stylish. Not that anyone would care when you're sitting on an 899.

  16. I accidentally drop my iphone 5 down the elevator shaft. Don't ask.

Anyway, so I got the iPhone 6. Went back and forth whether to get the 6 or 6 plus. The 6 plus is definitely easier for your eyes.

Better battery, screen resolution, camera and I think little faster processor.

The plus is not that big really. For a woman, it can go in a purse and may be back pocket even.

At the end. I got the iPhone 6, gold, 128GB. My old iphone 5 was always full, it was a pain whenever updates came out. So. I bit the bullet and went with the 128gb.

So far so good, I like it.

    Cheers.

    Where'd you get it? HK?

I got one in the USA - iPhone 6 64GB because 16 really isn't enough - waiting for it to be shipped over here.

I'm glad there's other people who also destroyed their perfectly good iPhone 5... mine got washed in the washing machine. Likewise, don't ask.
