  1. Several of my friends and I live in converted shop houses. I have 3 floors (about 350sqm) and pay 7000 per month in the Satorn area close to shopping and BTS. Of course they come pretty basic with no furnishing and you have to do a lot to them. There is one double shop house across from me for rent. Two floors at about 7000 and it's bigger than mine.

I lived in condos for years and like you I was looking for something different and now rent my condo out. I love my house and anybody who has seen it wants to find a shop house themselves. The problem is they are not advertised and you have to walk around the neighborhood you want to live in and see house with just a phone number on the door and also ask the people living around there.

You can pm me if you want any more info.

  2. The food at Yok Yor is pretty good and they also offer a dinner cruise though not as luxurious as some of the other cruises, but the food is much better and you don't have the noisy karoke. Actually you order the food on the boat and it comes from the restaurant before you leave.

Yok Yor restaurant also has a live band but I still like "Be My Guest" as it is smaller and more of a pub/bar to hang whereas Yok Yor is more definitely a restaurant. Enjoy...as both are good options!!

  3. "Be My Guest" right next to the Hilton Millennium. Pretty local restaurant bar with a band every night. Great views of the city and pretty good food as well. Generally some kind of beer promotion.

You can take the shuttle boat for the Millennium and get off and walk directly to the right. You can't miss it. More upscale but not The Oriental is Arun Residence. You can google it and it will give you directions. It's very popular with a great bar on the top deck with restaurant below and a spectacular view of Wat Arun.

  4. IBIS is good. Very new down Satorn Soi 1. They also offer free shuttle service to BTS and MRT as well as Silom. Another idea is the Om Yim Lodge. A very nice gay (but mixed) guest house at Chong Nong Si BTS. I actually have put some relatives in there and they loved it. It's cheap at about 900 and very nice and you certainly won't have to worry about your wife being bothered by anybody.

  5. In the past Food Glorious Food was the place to pick up imported foods and they even did special orders such as mince pies and cakes for Christmas. Had not been there or ordered from them in awhile since now it's quite easy to get import food from Tops, Villa, Food Land etc. I was driving down Sukhumvit 71 on Saturday and stopped in. The place had a deserted feel to it and I would be wary of buying anything as I'm not sure of what the turnover in food is. Everything was wrapped in plastic so hard to tell if really fresh or not, though the wine collection looked good, but then Wine Connection still beats them.

If I'm wrong about Food Glorious Food please correct me.

  6. My guy piles pillows on his head when he sleeps. :D You know, those little square ones. I'm talking about 5 or 6 of them. :D He does toss and turn alot though.

Btw, he would KILL me if he found out I posted pics of him sleeping. Do I dare risk it? :)

Risk it...but don't tell him! LOL! My bf would kill me if he knew I posted his pics on here! LOL!

  7. It's the same at the Silom branch of California Wow. Loads of policemen sitting around talking with the trainers. Pictures of police also up in the gym in various stages of working out. Police stations in the area local California Wow are offered free training and free memberships. The staff are not so happy since nobody is making money off it.

  8. Even for flight crew it is happening. It happened to me, especially lately and not just budget carriers but 5 star carriers as well. Last week I was scheduled to work BKK - AUH - CDG morning flight but 2 days before I was to work my schedule was changed to work afternoon flight as well as my working position on aircraft. On the morning flight I was the senior flight crew member working number 1 position but when changed to the afternoon I was now number 2. Lately both our flights from BKK to AUH have been 40pct full mid week. When I checked in that evening to work flight the load was near 95pct. I was told we had cancelled and consolidated both flights for both the out going and return. That evening I spoke to many irate passengers who did not find out until checking in that morrning but it also cost 15 crew to miss out on working as well.

When speaking to other flight crew friends I've been told this has been happening more and more out of BKK and not just with Air Asia but with full service carriers. So if your travelling mid week and you know the carrier has more than one flight to that destination you may receive a call or a surprise when you reach the airport.

This time last year our flights in and out of BKK were near full every day. Coming in last night which was a Friday we had a 60pct load which for a Friday was near 35pct off.

  9. Anybody??

I think there are so many in the area that nobody knows where to start. The new Le Meridien on Surawong is right in the middle of everything. For lunch just about everywhere on the roadside if you are looking for street food. For really good street food that is popular with the office lunch crowd cut thru Patpong over to Silom and on to Soi Convent. These outdoor stalls are popular both day and night. There are several Thai restaurants such as Bua next to Starbucks.

If you are looking for nice Thai Restaurant for the evening the one that comes to mind near the hotel is Mango Tree on Soi Tawana just across from the hotel. It's very popular and you always seem to need a reservation.

Any questions feel free to PM me.

  10. I've worked many a Christmas day serving passengers over the years. Depends on the destination on whether the flights are full or not. Domestic flights USA the flights are not full but inter Europe flights I've found to be pretty much the same. But as far as flights to Europe from Asia or vice versa I've found them pretty much the same. The worse day to fly back to Asia though is January 2nd as I've found the flights generally overbooked, but if you are flying economy you have a better chance of being upgraded.

As far as service goes it stays pretty much the same, though I do remember us having a "special holiday" menu several years ago, but with the economy and cut backs I'm sure that is a thing of the past.

  11. I love biking and having lived in Europe and the states I used to bike everywhere. The thing is in Europe and some cities in the states there are bike lanes which cars respect. Here we have bike lanes which are used for motorbikes and vendor carts and cars as well. Also the weather is just too hot that when you got anywhere you would need to change your clothes, that is if you make it and are not run over by a bus or a car. Also I could not imagine being behind one of those old buses with the black smoke pouring out.

As far as the bike system that you can rent bikes point to point, I also feel that would not work as the bikes would be stolen for parts. Just look at the baggage trolleys at the airport.

You can take bikes on the MRT and BTS but lately the BTS is so crowded I don't know how you could manage.

  12. I asked one of my friends who did graduate law school at Chula and yes some glasses are in English such as international law, but if you don't speak or write Thai you would never be accepted as most of the other glasses are in Thai and require Thai and English. You would also have to "entrance" for the Thai programs and these tests are in Thai.

As far as you other question, I don't know if you can become a lawyer once you graduate or not. There are many big law firms that have Thai Lawyers here that speak fluent English as they have done further degrees abroad.

Example my friend graduated here but did his masters in he UK. Also, the same as world wide there is a big glut of lawyers that don't have jobs here in Thailand.

  13. Hey guys,

I need some help. I want to study abroad and bangkok is my number one choice, the problem is that I want to study law. Are there any universities in bangkok that teach law in english? and im not interested in just taking some courses, I want earn the whole degree in thailand. I can convert the diploma into one that they accept in my country if the thai diploma is the kind that allows me to be a lawyer in thailand... so thats the kinda degree i need... help? anyone? :)

ABAC offers a graduate degree in law in English. For undergraduate degree I don't think any do. Thammasart and Chula the biggest for undergrad law do not but have several other programs in English.

Do a search of universities in Thailand and see what you come up with. I checked ABAC as I knew it was an English only university and asked other friends about the other two.

  14. A new tuk tuk cost 1.2 million baht and it has to be made in Japan? What a load of bull I can buy a new car for that and I always thought tuk tuk's are an Thai icon :)

As far as I know, Tuk Tuks as we know them in Bangkok are not used in Phuket, but are converted Daihatsu vans, which in Bangkok are called Songtows. this is probably what he means cost 1.2 million new.

  15. I don't believe it for a moment, but not saying the conversation on skype did not take place. The Shangrila hotel on the river is not a party hotel and in all my years in Bangkok I've never seen drunken yobs or otherwise in the hotel.

The OP mentioned that he was skyping with a booking agent and not the hotel directly. Perhaps the booking agent was trying to steer him towards another hotel as the Shangrila does not give a good commission or he has had or they have had problems with this particular agent in the past.

  16. Central Top's Marketplace have become great over the years. Many import products available all the time. I never have a problem finding anything I need. The supermarket at Paragon is also great.

  17. One situation I've run into here in Bangkok is Thai wearing Christian Crosses as earrings or even on t-shirts. When I can I casually ask if they are Christian or Catholic and usually the answer I get is no. I ask why are they wearing these symbols and they say quite simply for fashion. I then usually say...oh I see, then it would be ok for me to wear Buddha earrings or the like? Of course the answer I get back is...cannot!

Before moving to Thailand, I had a Buddha statue in my house as pure decoration, as it meant nothing to mean other than that. Again, I don't really see why the OP is shocked as the Buddha statue was purely just for decoration and was probably not meant to be offensive.

  18. Hi-

Off to Bali with the BF in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anybody had any ideas of where to stay and what to do. Of course I see lots of information on the net but was hoping someone in our Gay room had some inside information!

    Thanks all!
