  1. If you ask a Thai man what kind of liquor they like the most, invariably they will respond that they like whiskey. I don’t know if it’s just lack of knowledge, a word that was poorly used and translated in the past or wanting to seem sophisticated, but the vast majority of the “Thai whiskeys” are in actuality rum, have been made from distilled sugar cane.

Hong Thong (which means “golden swan”) is by far the most ubiquitous of the colored alcohols that is consumed by Thais. Regency is a step up, and if you are really fancy then you’ll splurge for some real whiskey in the form of Johnnie Walker. Other brands that are common to see in bars include Blend 285, Sang Som, Mekhong and 100 Pipers.

I don’t recall any Thai person ever drinking these straight, they are always mixed with ice and soda water. In fact, the association of alcohol with soda water is so strong that my co-teacher was confused when I once bought a soda water just to drink on its own and was concerned that I was going to be drinking in the middle of the day.

....as I copied this story from the web....cheers! :-)

  2. >The daily special express now terminates at Padang Besar.

Yep. Night sleeper train, little train goes on, then walk little and ferry to Penang. Great trip, adventure! :-)

    Amazing...

First time I went to Penang and took the train back, also. Indeed a man at border to Thailand, wanted me to show I had 10k (or so). The man was of route. 15 min taxi. It was late, i did not have it on me, no ATM close. My thai lady came, she talked, and voila, it was okay.

Amazing because Thai Ambassey already checked my finance, and thus give me a visa. Amazing because two people going form Hua Hin to Penang, get a visa, go back, must have that money. My thai lady saved the day. She convinced him that I took (financially) good care of her. I flew back this time, to avoid this man. No problem at all...

  3. I just went and  Ithink most of your questions have been answered.

    • What about finance - bank statements?

I made some copies of my bank account. Was okay

    • Penang?

    yes

    • Where is nearest to the Thai border?
    • Did you go by car?
    • Additional advice?

I went from Hua Hin. There is one daily overnight sleeper train from Hua Hin to Butterworth Penang and also one daily departure in the other direction.

    Hua Hin train to Butterworth ( Penang ) Malaysia - 2nd class air-con sleeper lower berth THB 1,135 ( approx AUD 40, USD 38, Euro 27, GBP 24, RM 113 )

You can change money to Malaysian ringgit on the train platform at the Thai/Malay border
Best to reserve the lower berth for slight extra cost.
    100 baht = 12,67 ringgit.

When you arrive to Georg town, you can walk everywhere. Best is to fly back with airasia to Dong mueng Bangkok. About the same price as going there by train.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Might be me...but I went to vientienne a couple of times to get a new (double entry) visa at thai ambassey there. So when you go there, apply for a real visa...I guess...you will have to stay a day..and that is great. Vientiennne has a lot to offer. Back then you could do that 3 times, before you had to go back home country, they told me. I went home after a year...so not really sure.

Yes, real visa is real visa. That's an international agreement. Can't refuse real visa. So I think (maybe) they (the staff you met) were not aware if they give you trouble.

  5. I don't know..there is a hotel close by....they took a dog (one of those bull types)....dog bite many people...many...they did not care...brushed it off..and it was other peoples fault...totally did not care...just paid themselves out of it, all the time...then it bite a thai...then the dog had to leave. I have seen the scars of people it bite. Not okay!

Dog represents the owners...good owners will have a good dog...any dog! You can teach a dog ballet, if you have those skills. If you don' have any skills...and let your dog attack people...it will! Fault of owner dog. You should not take one. Take a parrot.

And then yes, when you have a hotel/bar...do not take a dog, some people don't like..simple as that.

And yes, why this man was carrying a knive?

I think that bad guy and that bad dog fell in love...and couldn't have eachother...so a fight went on..or something.

If you own a bar/hotel..do not take a dog...but if you really want to...take a poodle...knives are for cutting apples, they should be at home.

If the man was bad..or the dog did bad..no idea..dogs can not bit people....and people killing dogs I wish a slow and painfull death...my dogs agree!

    Ah...somebody break in...Good Dog

Tried my house too..my dogs hurt the burglar very bad...he ran awayclap2.gif

  6. yeah...eh...well...I find this a bit confusing too...eh..."Education institutions told to carefully screen English teachers with child sex abuse records"

Screen teachers...any crime...don't need official papers (teaching degree)...but some proof he/she is good (good has many aspects) is needed. They are going to do that now...sounds good. I guess.

So this means they are going to do things better....well...good and offcourse.

Try to improve every day! No need to tell that...that's normal.

Yes, child sex abuse is terrible...if that happens...that is a priority. Duh!

  7. Some onliners...

-Don't bite the hand that feeds you

That dog loves you, since you are the boss. You feed it.. When he bites someone...HIT IT. It wont feel the physical pain..but the emotional. Dogs can not bite people. Had a dog in neighborhood. Bite many people...then bit a thai...so dog had to go. Never, ever have I seen the owners get angry at the dog. It was always someone elses fault. I took street dogs in. No way, I let them bite people. They know I kick their ass...they wont. There are like sweet puppies now. No street life, good food...and NO aggression or I get angry..and I am the alpha male. Yes, did happen once bite someone that hit one with his motorbike..Duh..defence.

    -A dog reflects the owner

When you are strong and show the dog can not bit people and show you are strong and proud....it won't. Yes, some people are mental and so some dogs are too...but I assume that is not the case here. Be a man! giggle.gif

    Good Luck
