  1. "Kidok" is to pay back with interest. So he was jokingly referring to when he broke her nail, he took a little bit of her he'd have to pay back a little more. When flirting could be sexual.
With a little prying everyone will know exactly who you are whilst in Thailand. So I'd forget about face, you won't have any.
    Up to you.

  2. One possible work around for a Lao is if he kept his name in the family book, then when the naibaan updates it (was every year previously at ours but now about every 3 & different for each naibaan) he can change his name & obtain a new passport. Will cost a bit. But go back fresh.
May be problem if married then want an extension of stay later.
My wife has, or had, 3 names & the one in her passport is not her given name at birth.

  3. Laos? Why doesn't he just hop on a small fishing boat across the Mekong, they come and go as they please. In fact, in provinces bordering Thailand, Laos don't even need a passport, just an ID Card.

Yep they only need an id but on the Lao side they pay ฿150 to the Lao police & receive a slip of paper with a stamp, dated.
On the Thai side they pay the Thai police ฿20 but have to explain the reason for the visit, more so if they're not returning the same day. Such as hospital visit, or seeing family.
On the way out they show the Thai police the slip of paper, they tear off a piece then the other part is to given back to the Lao police.
No slip of paper, big problem. Big bribe or taken in regardless. Days of just nipping across to work the fields etc are gone. It was the Lao side they had to avoid then, Thai no problem. Now it's the opposite.
But there are boats that sneak people in & out in the dead of night, before sunrise. Just dam ropey, but if a 5 year ban is on the cards...?
  4. The post Office tell me that a pre-paid Special Delivery envelope suitable for a passport will cost me £6.75

I received a reply to my email to the London Embassy that basically just said "look at the website" :annoyed:

Replied to it asking for clarity and, despite previous failed attempts, phoned them....and got an answer straight away - a feat hitherto unknown at the London Embassy!!!!
The lady said to send the passport, form and pictures (as usual) and confirmed I can either send a pre-paid Special Delivery envelope OR a £10 note
One of those "up to you" answers that actually helps.

Oh, and apparently turnaround is about 5 days (as it says on the website)
    Sorted!

Postal order costs money, but as I was paying the visa fee by way of postal order I always just added on the £10 to the order. Never had a problem with it since it been moved to London.
Only reason didn't send the envelope was because the post office clerk would sell me each item individually, so would have to wait for her to do the order, then the envelope. Save time.
No fee, no postal order, just the envelope.
    Have a nice trip.

No one in Thailand is interested in your egomaniacal Western notion of "legacy".

Thailand is one of the lands of "Impermanence".

    They proliferate in the East.

Maybe you have enough time left to find out what it means?

Or you might see if you can make sense of this:

"I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”   Ozymandias, Percy Bysshe Shelley.

But he was the daddy in his day...
  6. But........ we're going around in circles so yes, you're probably correct....but then you usually are   It's just so **** irritating that the site is ambiguous, and what is odd is that last time when i sent 2 separate payments it all went smoothly.

Whenever I've got mine from London I just tallied up the visa fee + £10 in a postal order. No need for cash or 2 separate payments.
Sending a pre addressed special delivery envelope works out a couple of pound cheaper. Just laziness on my part.
If I done 1 today I'd just send the envelope.

  7. A nanny state is a country that enforces laws that encroach on your personal liberty & common sense. But free to express your disquiet & have them changed.
A totalitarian state is one that enforces laws that demand to know where you are at all times & restrict expressing what your thinking or sharing those thoughts if they don't comply.
Freedom is an illusion in both but only one your free to change.

Are you telling me that most/all of the people that you've met in Thailand want to rip you off?  Seriously?

No...was pointing out that a country with little recourse or appetite to apply a rule of law doesn't reflect on a persons lack of trust when dealing in that country, but reflects on the country. That also doesn't reflect on individual Thai people.
I have far less trust in Thailand than I do my own country, for the simple fact I have easy recourse other than a gang of thugs or bribes to to do my bidding.
  9.
I've been in Thailand 10+ years and have never been conned the way the OP has.  If you are "unable to trust people in a country," it's more about you.  It has nothing to do with the country.

    Balls.
People take what they believe they can get away with. In a country with robust law enforcement people are hesitant & think twice.
It's an indictment of the country, not the person.
  10. Laying bricks to get a house finished before I fly out of the country.
Checking the worth of the pound which I've lost a grand on already & wistfully thinking of getting a 3 piece suit made down Sukhumvit & flying back to Hong Kong where it all can be forgotten.
    & yer...going to take a shower too.
