Phuket: Crackdown on tourists riding electric scooters on main roads
tonray replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
I'm sure that was 'profitable' -
When I moved from Bangkok to a MooBaan in Nonthaburi, I bought a nice sturdy Adult Trycycle with big shopping baskets so I could traverse the local roads and at least get some produce and small grocery items from nearby shops because I did not have a car yet. Went out one time...almost forced into a ditch adjoining a rice field by a massive horn blaring truck (barely able to fit on our narrow road here)...made it home and never took it out again. Bought a car instead....another form of danger but at least it has 6 airbags...

Prince Andrew settles out of court.
tonray replied to Chomper Higgot's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
Exactly...in fact testimony at Maxwell trial stated that servers and staff were instructed not even to look directly at Epstein while he was in the house and certainly never be so bold as to speak to him. He pretended to be Royalty...much like Andrew in the end -
Yet amazingly...many of us are happy here...no need to maintain escape routes. Go with the flow....don't try to create an 'expat paradise' at a lower cost structure than your home country. Good tidings and happiness to all that leave...but happiness is intrinsic and you'll carry your troubles with you wherever you go.

Foreign chambers of commerce ask Prayut to keep the door open
tonray replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Is this a meeting to discuss the importation of walkie talkies ? You might think they can sit a bit closer around a table to discuss things without having to shout across the room. -
Good points...but as to inflation, the point of being invested in dividend producing stocks is to receive current income and also gain inflation protection as over the long term stocks have produced an average return of somewhere between 5 and 10% depending on portfolio allocation.

While it may not be enough for you....that's probably twice as much as the typical old codger here has saved up if the fact many use agents because they don't have 800k baht to deposit for extensions is an iny indicator. With pension(s) and portfolio generating dividends...more than enough unless you are spending more than 100K baht monthly. That is about 400,000 US dollars for reference. Invested conservatively in a portfolio generating 3 % per annum: $12,000 US annually or $1000 per month After estimated 28% tax rate, that's $720 net per month or 23,000 baht monthly. Supplementing that with pension and one couold conceivably live comfortably. How much pension is the question he needs to answer....apologies if stated already but did not go back and read every post.

tonray replied to Jingthing's topic in COVID-19 Coronavirus
Yeah...my GF's mom surprised me because she was a vaccine holdout...then one day she told GF she got her shot...when GF asked what changed her mind, she simple stated that her cabal of old lady friends decided to hold out for a year until they could get Pfizer instead of SinoVac. These old birds are more up on stuff than you might think. -
