  1. Just back from one week in Cambodia, entry to Thailand via Poipet on second entry of three entries (from Thai embassy in Berlin).

One week in Cambodia, "touring" there in whatever form, makes you a bonafide tourist. It's the same day back-to-back exit/reentry that is targeted with the current crackdown.

In a post elsewhere on TV a IO at the southern border recommended (requested) to stay two nights outside of Thailand.

  2. Something bad happens down the line, the top guy falls on his sword. As it should be.

This wouldn't have happened before the coup. No matter how high you are, if you screw up, you will be held responsible. Well done!

Personally I don't subscribe to the Management by Harakiri theory, except if the screwup can directly be attributed to the guy responsible. Neither do I agree with the American style of political correctness where the public (press) demands such sacrifice.

In the case of this ceo he was something like a year in his position. Not much time on the job to clear out bad apples on all levels. He ought to have had the chance to rectify the situation and get further issues solved.

Removing the top guy over every incident in the company will never get a real trouble shooter and problem solver interested in holding the position (whatever golden parachutes may be promised).

How long will it take the next ceo to get to know the finer ins and outs and the failures of the company?

  3. A bit late to this thread, but I see typical military thinking here: a command is a command and the result must show up!

(insert reference to the bazzillion of the "Hitler screeching" spoofs on YT here)

Just that civilian life doesn't respond too well on commanded suggestions, and economy is a whole different creature.

  4. I have seen tourists fall for this also. The scammers wait until they take the picture, then jump out like sukhumvit cigarette police and demand their money. Its a shame it took public complaints for a famous Watt to do the right thing and didnt change this on their own, but I suppose they got a cut...

    I think you mean Wat.

The famous Watt (James Watt) worked with Matthew Boulton and William Murdoch to engineer steam power for the world's first factory - the Soho Manufactory on the borders of Handsworth (later part of Birmingham) and Smethwick never, never a part of Birmingham, in the centre of England.

However I do agree with everything you say about the scam.

I see no error here, Watt got those tourists steamin' ;)
  5. My Thai consulate in Switzerland applies same rule, and iirc from another thread, Paris France same.

Switzerland currently has four Thai consulates (including the consular section of the Thai embassy). Which one is yours?

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

    Mine is Zurich.

I contact them now to see if I can get the legal background from them, since UJ said no such regulation exists.

Personally I would not be surprised to see its existence, and the consulates around Thailand just selling what the customer requests (aka "you do the research") and just leaving it to immigration to "enforce" at the border. And the overseas consulates being much aware of the bad press ought they not advise and warn people (reject applications).

  6. If I understand correct and some poster was check very hard on Non o visa so Iam worried. I have a couple of Turist visas

and the last 3 years on Ed visa and plan to get retirement visa soon but as I read they can if they feel like it say get lost at the boarder based on my history?

Three years ED visa, you have been studying Thai for so long? You should by now be able to explain your situation in fluent Thai with the immigration officer.

I can, hardly fluent but good enough but explain what? They do what they want and dont give a shit of what you try to explain or not.The issue is I will have a legit Non O visa when I get to the border but I have the history of turist visas and then Ed visa and as I read some post the really check your passport then they can easy say NO.its totally up to them and the individual officer as just becasue I get the visa stamp from the embassy does not mean I get in. So far what I read no one have been denied extension of there retiremet visa but its all new so time will tell.Just the bad feeling that not knowing and have all your stuff here if there is a issue. So can only wait and see if some people will have issue with this also.

I guess I missed the point and you were having another ED prior to the non-O.

Imho with your non-O you should be be sailing thru without problem. You have the kind of visa Thai immigration expects, and the kind you can transfer to legal long stay. You are not a candidate trying to play the system with ED or tourist visa.

  7. It may be worth remembering that those on a NON-O based on marriage can, I believe, extend your stay at any immigration by 60 das as long as you take the wife with you? This would mean only having to leave the country every 150 days.

Worth posting this one again: http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/doc/temporarystay/policy777-2551_en.pdf . It's 2.24, you don't even need a visa to get that one.

I am a bit worried about this police order being revamped. When I came here in 2007, the marriage extension did not have the 400k baht in bank option. If they fiddle with it again, I still have the Thai kid option, should they change that too .. screwed.

I wish immigration would be more transparent about the changes they are contemplating and actually allow discussion, instead of just blurting them out suddenly.

The 400k baht in Thai bank for extensions based upon marriage was in the police order in 2007. In fact at that time if could be in a joint account and the 40k income could also be your wife's or a combination of yours and hers.

Police order 777/2551 eliminated the wife's income option and joint accounts.

There has been no indication from immigration that will be any changes made to the extension rules.

I've been googling and can't find it, but I distinctly remember there was only the 40k/month income option at the time, I even contemplated setting up a company just to fulfill that. Anyway by the time my multi-entry non-o got old, the 400k rule was in place and I've been on those extensions ever since.

The problem with immigration is, there never is any indication of changes. They just drop from the clear sky.

Within the pdf document, for marriage type visa extension, there is mentioned a grandfather clause for a pre-1998 regulation, that recinded amount of 40k asset and 20k income. Is this what you have in mi,d?

  9. I just went to Singapore to apply tourist visa 60 days, and they denied. They won't accept if you have been in Thailand more than 90 days in 6 months, they said. So i couldn't even apply.

As return to Bangkok, they said I need a tourist visa and they turned me home. I had return ticket to home in 3 weeks, but it wasn't their concern at all....

    Thailand has changed a lot.

Could you give some details please - on the face of it this seems like a game changer. Which country are you from? would you normally be allowed to enter for 30 days on a visa exempt stamp? How long have you been in Thailand? which airport did you arrive at in Bangkok?

    Thanks.

Nothing new. Singapore has used that excuse for not issuing a visa long before this one. There is no rule to back it up.

They are using a rule for exempt entries that went away almost 6 years ago.

My Thai consulate in Switzerland applies same rule, and iirc from another thread, Paris France same.
  10. I sincerely hope that Joe is correct in his view, and I suspect he is, that those with re-entry permits would have no problem.

    ....

(an obvious question here is whether its the responsibility of the Consulate to make that call before you get anywhere near the border. Do Consular staff have the training necessary to act as Immigration officers and if you were running a business, would you want to turn people away when the fees they paid were your primary revenue stream ? Rhetorical questions but it would be interesting to know how many get any direct training from Immigration)

As I just mentioned upthread, consular fees will not be the only income, but folks on correct visa will get their yearly extension and the Revenue Department will get its turn on the expats income stream.
  11. I'm still waiting for reports of people being turned away from the airports - the land borders are an obvious target if you are looking to catch visa runners. I also wonder if the Immi officer who gave terryp a hard time would be prepared to do so if he had a line of a hundred or so tourists fresh off a flight behind him. When this hits the airports - even in the current lowest of low seasons - it wont just be TVers complaining.

Slightly off topic, but bear with me, please.

Good point. The implications of turning someone away from an airport are much more onerous than turning someone away at a ground crossing. The airport "arriver" has to be flown out (and at whose expense if there is a visa?)

It would also be good to know if the airlines start tightening up on who they let on the plane, because they're required to pay for repatriation (plus a hefty fine) if the "arriver" gets turned away at immigration because of dodgy paperwork.

I suspect airline entries may be a better choice than ground entries- until we start to hear otherwise.

I guess also that those arriving by plane have generally a "better profile" considering the spend more for air fare than the land visa runner will, and may expect to bring more to Thai economics.
  12. I have not heard any reports of people being denied entry on a non-o visa.

From ubonjoe, "I think that the Ranong crossings could be added to the list. Even those with multiple entry non-o visas were turned away there along with tourist visas."
Especially for multi-entry non-O it will be interesting to see what time immigration expects these holders to spend outside of Thailand before re-admission.

As for multiple back-to-back entries on tourist visa, I seem to remember that the consulate back in my European home country reminded me, that total stay in Thailand may not exeed 180 days within one year. I still need to check if this is the case for non-O visa of any type.

Of course passing the 180 day limit formally gives the Revenue Department a valid reason to taxation. I wonder how much extra these "new" long term residents will add to the Thai budget.

  13. I have always thought Thai TV soaps as some form of slow torture of enduring rubbish. Besides when it comes to morals, that is the pot calling the kettle black.

I have never seen so many guns popping out of nowhere to settle a dispute, which is rather inappropriate don't you think ?

Considering that The General is currently collecting war weapons, the script ought to be rewritten. Thinking of shifting to Sonkhran and water pistols :D
  14. Warehouse filled with rotten rice in Nakhon Si Thammarat

    .....

The officials were stunned at the sight of rotten rice scattered on the ground of the warehouse while the rice sacks were disorderly stacked and infested with weevils. There were traces of several rice sacks being gutted.

Pol Lt-Col Pachon Niamrin, deputy superintendent of Kapang police station, said that the warehouse was struck by fire three times on March 4, 2011, February 21 and April 5 this year.

However, he ruled out arson saying that the fires might have been :o caused by aluminium phosphate interacting with relative humidity.

  15. SERIOUS QUESTION:

Can something in authority get official clarification from immigration regarding the new policy as it relates to those who are apprehended with an under 90 day stay. Are they indeed subject to a 5 year ban, or not, as the current text clearly indicates that they are? Or if not, what IS the specific policy (IF DIFFERENT from 90 days to one year) for those apprehended with overstay of less than 90 days?

The OP says quite clearly ....

"The new measures, which will see overstayers of more than 90 days blacklisted, are as follows:..."

So I read that to mean that if you are apprehended and you have 89 day's overstay the current penalties will apply.

    Not this again.

It CLEARLY says under one year gets a 5 year ban IF APPREHENDED.

That's why I am asking for CLARIFICATION of that from someone with actual inside knowledge and authority.

Not people making guesses or indulging in wishful thinking or making assumptions about stuff from the PAST.

About the IF APPREHENDED part, not the voluntary part.

As the text is written now, the most logical reading is that the 5 year ban applies to all overstayers up to one year apprehended even UNDER 90 days.

So a clarification would be more like a correction of what is already written, IF indeed those apprehended with under 90 days will indeed be treated differently. In that case, I think we need to know treated differently how specifically.

I think it is entirely reasonable to ask for clarification about this aspect of the new rule:

Apprehension with an overstay of less than 90 days

Is that too much to ask for?

i guess this means if you now move to the border you will be lucky, but if police pick you up before crossing the border line you have drawn the short straw.

  16. I read that (in the US) a name change in the court costs $200 and a new passport costs $120. Problem solved?

Nope. Your fingerprints follow you as part of the biometric information.

And in many countries namechange is not granted at the whim of the applicant but only for 'serious reasons' maybe once in a lifetime. Or make a legal marriage and take the family name of your spouse

  18. Travelling to CW by public transport possible?

CW happens to be at the wrong end of BKK for me. I am happy to travel on BTS / MTS to get around a limited part of the city. But I seem to miss how get further up north to CW.

For 'longhaul' in the past I had chauffeur service in form of my wife, alas she is in farangland.

Is this a case to saviour taxi services? Any taxi at CW to return, or hire a full day?

    Regards - Richard
