  1. The Chiang Rai Forum is now existing for one year.

Time to make up the balance:

A total of postings of 2838 (original postings + replies, 90 percent more or less on-topic), which is about 237 a month.

The total number of views is 131.460, which is 10.955 a month.

I think it is not bad for a little town like this.

And to all who have been criticizing the forum or me as its moderator I want to say two things:

    1) This forum has been moderating itself for 99,99 percent.

    2) The only way to influence it and to steer it in the direction you prefer, is to contribute to it.

With other words: Improve or approve!

    My 2 cents ...

    Limbo :o

I must admit that any time I am blessed by the sight of Our Esteemed Moderator’s (OEM) name I perform a high wai in his honour. His exceptional diplomatic skills and towering intellect leave me humbled. I suspect that most members of this forum would agree that we could find no better moderator than the Drs. Limbo.

  2. cheers my work mate would like to travel on the train,(bed)

dont know about the coach, maybe fly up,i have flown to the shetland islands on Dan Air,

i can handle it, dont know if Number 6 (keep them numbered it's easier) will fly though

It's all right. Keep taking the tablets and it'll be ok. Really

Perhaps you should travel by ferry boat. It will get you here as quickly as the nonexistent train.

  3. I see that the thread title is misspelled "out Toen" instead of "oour town" - sorry

busy battling some worm virus but think I can do this

. Surely, to Briggs’s mind, all that was needed was for good men to spread science and Christianity.

And now, more than a century later, farangs still flock to Thailand to persuade the heathens that Christianity is the answer to all of their problems but they've dropped the science part.

  4. DON'T DISCREDIT THE HOLY EASTERBUNNY!!!!!

I'm just an ignoramus from northern Europe, not too well versed in English.

What in the world is an "easterbunny" and what on earth has it got to do with this topic?

    Ottokar,

The topic began as a discussion of ghosts but has drifted on to a debate between believers and nonbelievers – of spirits, scientific theory and religion. The latter includes the Easter Bunny who was never holy but definitely entertaining for little Christian kids searching for hidden eggs on Easter morning.

Think of the energy like smoke. For a while, you can see it.

As your life force fades away (you die) the energy dissapates in the air till it is no more recognizable as energy but instead loses its individuality and blends in with other types of energy such as sunlight, radio/tv/microwaves, etc and retains no similarity to its former self.

Much the same way smoke from a fire does when it goes up into the atmosphere and fades away with the wind.

    Thus, fading away into nothingness.

    Definitely a nonbeliever!!!

  5. is that Bo's place is a small resturant with pool table with aroy hamburger near night bazaar? just make sure that there is the same Bo's place that u guys mention???

    unknown_user.. :o

I think it is way out near Big C - not far from the bowling alley - but there are many places serving farang food within walking distance of the Night Market.

  6. Why is Erg pushing the AA-team?? He is definitely not a member, and if his customers join, than he looses business. Doesn't make any sense :D

If at first you don't succeed - try, try again.

  7. And you Mr. Erg, I never knew that you were such a slimy character! What a disappointment!

But my revenge will be sweet :o !

Prof. Dr. Limbolus Safelyhome. Are you not ashamed of yourself???

    No.

    Let's all blame Mr. Homealone.

He is used to it :D:D:D

    Limbo.

PS. Some readers might find this kind of postings off-topic (not related to bowling in Chiang Rai or even to Chiang Rai in general), but the opposite is true: This kind of postings adds an extra dimension to the informative character of our forum.

It gives the reader a refreshing insight in the pleasant way Chiang Rai expats interact with each other. The extreme tolerance they show towards each other, the joyfull way they communicate and so on, and so on, too much to mention. Friendly, always softspoken, shortly exemplary. PUT THAT ERDINGER COLD!

    Limbo -

Glad to have you back in good form. It's always a pleasure sparring with you.

Set up the pins - let's go bowling.

  8. A few foreigners in a strange country and always wordfighting please let us live in peace together i think it is not so difficult.

Not to worry - this is not fighting. The many foreigners residing in this now very familiar country sometimes need to throw a pebble on the smooth surface of our usually rather peaceful coexistance. Drs Limbo (I think there is more than one of them) is well equipped and often eager to egage in a bit of intellectual fencing. In keeping with the topic of this thread:

Is the bowling for real? Might be fun.

I forgot to mention another possible team - The Buns from Hamburger One.

  9. Dear Limbo,

I guess I hit a nerve. And, yes, you missed quite few expat businesses but that is really not the point. It is the repeated mentioning and promoting of one particular place that becomes tiresome. Unless the CR Forum is meant to be a place to continue the bar conversations at the establishment you refer to so often.

You’re the boss. Up to you.

    :o Homealone

    Dear Mr. Homealone,

Thanks for making one thing clear: It is 'up to you' and not 'upp to you'. I always had a problem with this. My English is lousy, I know.

But please don't refer to me as 'the boss'. That hits a nerve! That's like stepping on my blue suede shoes!

Please mention any nice place you can recommend for expats living here or for expats living elsewhere or visitors.

What do you me want to tell, we want to start up (upp?) a bowling team but we don't want you to tell who we are and where you can find us?

Where is the superb brillianty we are used to be presented by you?

    Limbo :D

    Ms. Limbo -

Superb brilliancy!!! Now that is truly offensive!

A slang definition of “boss” intends to denote a much-admired person of excellence. Considering your occasional efforts to elevate the CR Forum discussion to include some topics of culture and sophistication I was alluding to this informal meaning of “the boss”.

Not to belabor the point but – it was the persistent reference to one place in particular that had inspired grumbling amongst those that are not in regular attendance at your favourite watering hole. Might this be a reason for the lack of participation in the CR Forum by a wider variety of local expats and interested Thais? ‘Nuff said.

Best of luck to Bo’s Bowlers as they face the stiff competition presented by The Funny House Fools, The Old Dutch Duffers, The DaVinci Divas – to name but a few potential rivals.

    Strike!

  10. GOOD-WILL AMBASSADOR HIPPOPOTAMUS FROM GERMANY HAS ARRIVED AT CHIANG MAI NIGHT SAFARI

A good-will ambassador hippopotamus from Germany has arrived at Chiang Mai Night Safari and joined the hippopotamus family there.

Upon arrival at the holding pen in Chiang Mai Night Safari, the 1-year-old hippopotamus walked in to greet his new friends. Officials from Frankfurt zoo will keep check on the 450-kilo youngster for a month before he is brought out for visitors to see.

Phisarn Wasuwanit (พิศาล วสุวานิช), the director of Chiang Mai Night Safari's administration, said the reception of the hippopotamus from Frankfurt zoo would foster friendship between Thailand and Germany. He also disclosed that the German officials have expressed confidence in Chiang Mai Night Safari's capability of caring for the animals.

Yes, Mr. Homealone, it is a problem difficult to solve. Let me try it again:

Sitting together with some other expats in a little bar/restaurant usually frequented by Chiang Rai expats one of the expats came with the idea to start an expat bowling team. Some of the other present expats liked the idea. A name for this enterprise was easily found.

The expats present thought that there might be some non-present expats in Chiang Rai who would like to join.

Knowing Bo I am sure you can go to her place and ask for information without being forced to order a refreshment. I want to go further: I am even convinced that she would permit you to use the toilet for free.

Dear Mr. Homealone, you might want to volunteer as co-ordinator of Bo's Bowling Buddies.

People interested could come to your place then. You wouldn't be home alone anymore :D

And specially for the people who like the real Italian salami and Greek feta cheese: You can get it nowadays in Big C.

This for showing you that I don't discriminate.

Giving information is something else then direct advertising.

    Limbo.

PS. Did you have some other place in mind? Other expat places in Chiang Rai:

Hamburger #1 in Ban Du, Funny House opposite the Wiang Inn Hotel and the bars of the Yedyodstreet. Did I miss some?

And what about mentioning the existence of the bowling alley itself, Mr. Homealone?

It might benefit the owner of it. But it is also good news for the expats who like the game.

And some of them would like to play with others. And for them it might be fun to join our team.

Please tell me what I should do in this kind of situations.

    Thank you!

  13. Yes there are a lot of Thai cooking schools in CR. and thats nice for the tourists and other interested, like retired bargirls who have to cook for their new husbands etc.

But a school were thai can learn about the secrets of the western kitchen wouldt be very helpfull for many restaurants i guess. There are not enough western cooks in CR, and the ones qualified are offcourse expensive.

Therefour if anyone knows about this i would be interested.

Maybe its an idea to start one??

  14. TRANSPORT MINISTER TO EXPAND INFRASTRUCTURE IN CHIANG RAI SO AS TO LINK WITH CHINA AND LAOS

Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal (พงษ์ศักดิ์ รักตพงศ์ไพศาล) stated that he will improve the infrastructure in Chiang Rai Province so as to revert the province into a commercial hub with neighboring countries.

The Transport Minister insisted that Transport Ministry will boost constructive mega-projects in CHIANG RAI provice. The mega-projects will include the construction of third bridge crossing the Khong (โขง) River at Chiang Khong (เชียงของ) in Chiang Rai (เชียงราย) province. The bridge will link with R-3 route passing China, Laos, and Thailand. The construction of second Chiang Sean (เชียงแสน) Port and four-lane routes from Chiang Rai (เชียงราย) - Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่) are also within the frame of the planned mega-projects. The Transport Minister insisted that the projects will be managed in a transparent level and will abide with the government's policy.

  16. A question asked many times is how many people live in Chiang Rai City.

I really dont know is my answer then, but yesterday a beautifull lady asked me this question and i was emberrased.

So maybe this is a good question for the forum?

Maybe someone knows how many expats we have, but i guess this is not easy, because expat means all nationalities.

ps. can somebody tell me something about Tommy Row ? :o

Chiang Rai City - 30,000. Expats - 5,000 Dutch and 500 of other nationalities.

Tommy Row? He's sitting behind Alan Aisle.

  17. I'm surprised that the Lanna Kingdom had any influence in northern Vietnam unless by this they mean just barely into Vietnam up in the highlands. I read a history of Vietnam many years ago but don't remember any mention of Lanna...maybe I've just forgotten. I do seem to remember that way back then the Vietnamese tended to stay in the lowlands where rice could be irrigated since that was the activity around which their culture developed....so maybe at that time the Vietnamese just considered that whoever was up in the hills were just mountain people and of no consequence. Don't know.

One of the ethnic minorities of Vietnam is called 'Tai Dam' (Black Tai).

If I recall things right, they are supposed to live in the area around Dien Bien Phu (spelling?). Their origine could be 'Lanna'.

One of the hills of that area has for a long time been occupied by another ethnic minority, which had its roots in France.

    Limbo.

I find it unlikely that the Tai Dam had much to do with Lanna culture since their language has little Sanskrit or Pali influence. I think that they were mountain people up until a couple of hundred years ago and if this is correct then it is probably not correct to associate them with the Lanna culture which was predomenantly a lowland sort of thing.

Lanna Thai are a different ethnic group from Tai.

  18. Laos as part of Lanna?  News to me.  Lan Chang or Lan Xang, Luang Prabang, once had a king who was also briefly king of Lanna at ChiangMai, but it was separate countries, if that is the appropriate term (which I think it isn't - principalities might be better...)

Even within Lanna there were different kings at different places - in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Maung Mai, Chiang Tung (Keng Tung)...  and Nan and Phayao were there own places with their own royalty.

    Dear Joel,

What I understand is that the Kingdom of Nan strechted into the Southern part of China (Sibsongpanna?), covering a greater part of present Laos.

And that the French after the Pak Nam 'Incident' occupied the Northern part, the left side of the Mekong River (1893).

The King was staying in His palace in Nan untill he passed away, more than eighty years old.

The former palace is now a National Museum.

I haven't been to Nan for fifthteen years at least. You want to come with me?

    Limbo.

I have to agree with Limbo – During the isolationist Ming Dynasty the Lanna Kingdom’s influence (and sometimes rule) included northern Burma, Laos, Yunnan and northern Vietnam. The Kingdom’s capital was Chiang Mai or, at times, Chiang Rai.

    :o Homealone

  19. Oh! I forgot to mention something else I like about Chiang Rai. My good friend Limbo of course. :D  :D

A pity that there is no slimie among the smilies.

Good to see you back Homealone!

For a moment I was afraid we lost you.

    And by the way:

    Dear Mr. Erg,

Can you ask Bo to clarify these 2 mysteries here?

Hang a sign behind the bar: a free drink for Chiang35Baht and Homealone (on my bill).

Maybe they have a weak moment and go for it :D You never know!

    Limbo :o

No Limbo, not lost. An extended stay in mandatory rehab. I appreciate the drink offer but as part of my recovery program I do not patronize pubs. Nor do I know a Mr. Erg or Bo.

    I just remain :D Homealone :D

By the way, interesting places in CRai - the outside aerobics class every evening at the old jail site and across the street at the basketball court mid-morning to afternoon you'll often find a shirtless middle-aged man with a T-Shirt turban loudly reciting lines from Shakespeare to an audience of riderless motorcycles.
