  1. I am currently living at home with my wife, (not legally married), and am suffering from terminal cancer, I do not expect to see the New Year.

My question is…….what does my wife have to do with regards to informing various agencies.  An ambulance will be called to take my body to the hospital that I am under the care of.  I wonder at what point the police get involved, what happens to my passport, bank account books.

I already have a Thai/English will, but we only realised recently that I have to give my permission to my wife to remove me from hospital to the temple. In most cases there is a family member, who would perform this task, but I don’t have any family in  Thailand, or back in the UK.

  2. Had a similar problem with rats under the bonnet, but they chewed the wires and the car would not start.  The third time it happened I went to start the car, and because of a short in some wires, I blew the engine control computer, 35,000 baht to replace.

Solution for me was to hang a plastic perforated container that is used in toilet deodorisers, under the bonnet, and filled it with naphna balls obtainable from Tesco, just like the old fashioned moth balls we had back in the UK.

  3. I purchased an Asus X555L laptop, exactly two years ago.

Recently I noticed that the deck of the computer was rising up, so that the screen would not close down completely.

Everything about the computer was working OK, but today I took the said computer to a shop to investigate.  The pictures are of the lithium-ion battery, that had swelled to twice the normal thickness, thus pushing the deck of the computer into a bow. The shop has ordered another battery for which they want 1,800 baht, plus 200 baht to fit.

The man in the shop did say that the battery could have exploded at any time.

  4. For the past two years I have purchased many items from Aliexpress.  Without exception everything has been sent by China Post, delivered to my door by our local Thai postman, with never an additional charge, and delivered in less than two weeks, sometimes a lot faster.  I have had no complaints with the service.

However, last December I ordered three pairs of long pants from Aliexpress, the money was taken from my bank account, and after some time I decided to check the tracking information.  Then, the tracking information told me that delivery had been attempted on 19 January, but there was nobody to receive the parcel.  I dispute this, as there is always someone at home, no card had been left, and our postman will redeliver the next day, if we should be unavailable.

I queried with the supplier in China, and they told me that the parcel was at the local post office.  We checked there, with a negative result.  Last Wednesday 22 February, the postman delivered a          notice that I had to pay money at the post office, 802 baht.  Quite obviously no attempt had been made to deliver to our address, when there was a sum of money outstanding.  We collected the goods from the post office last Thursday.

I now see from the Aliexpress web site that the items were sent via Aliexpress Standard Shipping, and not as previously, China Post.  Possibly the different method of transit enters Thailand at a different place. Net result, with the charges I have had to pay here in Thailand has cancelled any savings that I had expected from buying from Aliexpress.  On reflection I could probably have had the long pants tailor made here in Thailand, for the same money, if not less, and taken delivery in just a few days.

I still have one order outstanding which is in transit with Aliexpress Standard Shipping, so I wait to see how long that will take to reach me, and how much it will cost me.

  5. We purchased a new Mazda 2 1.5 diesel, nearly 6 months ago.  We have only done 2,500 kms, but the selling dealer has reminded us that the car needs a 6 month, or 10,000 kms service. Upon checking the owners handbook, this is indeed the case, and the book tells me that the engine oil and filter need to be replaced. No problems so far.  The engine requires 5.1 litres of oil for the change if the filter is changed at the same time.

My problem is.......there are two Mazda dealers in Udonthani.  The supplying dealer wants 1,900 baht for the oil and filter, and the other dealer wants 2,100 baht for the same service.  Comparing these prices with what I pay for an oil and filter change on my 3 litre Isuzu D-Max, (takes more oil) usually about 1,200 baht, I am suspecting someone is overcharging.

Does anyone have any information about this please?

  6. We bought a Mazda 2 1.5 litre diesel last September.  We don't do many kilos, so far 2,500 kms.  Cannot fault the car.  No problems whatsoever.  Very quick, considering Thai roads, and plenty of room for me when I get to drive it....I am 183cms, but car really was my wife's Christmas present. Paint finish is good. Sound system is good. With a light right foot, the fuel economy is excellent.  My only gripe was the delay in getting an English language handbook, and after receiving two books, I can find no mention of how to programme the Sat Nav, so we learnt by trial and error.  As an aside, when we went to collect the car, the salesman wanted 15,000 baht for the SD card that contains the route information.  When I refused to pay this money, the price fell to 10,000 baht, and then to 9,000 baht if we would pay direct into his bank.  It was then that I said they could keep the 10,000 baht deposit, and we would walk away.  The next day we received a call from  the shop owner to say we could have the SD card free. So we collected the car.

  7. Have had 2 accounts with Krungsri bank for a few years now.  Good interest on the main a/c, but NO ATM card, hence having the second account with an ATM card.  Have my UK state pension paid direct to Krungsri bank, and get an SMS as soon as the deposit is received. From what I can tell, no additional charges for the direct payment.

Have opened accounts for other Farangs without any problems.  The only thing they seem to find objectionable is if the Farang is American.

Interest on the main a/c is paid monthly, and tax deducted by the bank.  One branch in Udon will provide me with my annual immigration letter within one hour.

  8. Just bought a new car, and the dealership had the window film applied for us.  Every window had at least one of the manufacturers name printed on.  I tried window cleaner to remove it, nothing happened.  I tried alcohol.  Nothing happened.  Went to a dealer who specialises in window film, to be told that cannot take off writing......wait for the sun to fade it.

Came home and decided to try acetone (nail polish remover).  One wipe with a soft cloth dampened with the acetone and the writing was gone.

  9. Recently a Thai real estate agent made an appointment to view our house at 10.00am.  This was changed by her to 1.30pm.  She finally arrived at 2.00pm.  No call to say she would be late, and no apology when she arrived.  I asked her why she was late, and the answer was she was busy. My answer was....if you are so busy, then better you are not here.....goodbye.  She must have been here for all of 2 minutes.

Last week my wife was called for an interview with the area manager of Budget Rent a Car, concerning employment.  Appointment made for 10.00am, and I made sure my wife was 10 minutes early.  Area manager finally arrived 50 minutes late, with no call, and no apology.  I suggested to my wife that if that is how the company operates, then they are not worth working for.

  10. A few days ago my wife and I ordered a new Mazda 2 XD Sports High Plus L, the top of the range.  One of the attractive features of the car, was the satellite navigation system.

Today we had a call to say the car had been delivered to the dealership.  When I asked to see the navigator working, we were told by the salesman that we would have to pay 15,000 baht for an SD card.  I refused to pay this, and the price was reduced to 10,000 baht, and then to 9,000 baht.  We walked away from the new car and came home.  A call to Mazda in Bangkok revealed that the true price of the SD card is 16,500 baht.

Somehow I regard this as sharp practice.  The car in question has all the parts needed for navigation, except, the SD card.

Since we have only paid 10,000 baht deposit to order the car, the dealer can keep the car, and we will keep our money.  I am wondering if I would have to pay extra if I want 4 wheels.

  11. Sorry to hear about your current foot problem. A small piece of advice from one who is suffering.

Was an in-patient for a week in a local hospital for 2 operations to remove abcesses. Shortly after release from hospital, my right foot turned blue. A week later all my toes on that foot had turned black. The surgeon/doctor was very good, and said that he would try to stop the gangrene from spreading to my foot, otherwise it would be a foot amputation. Not a good idea I thought. However, although after many daily visits to the A & E, they managed to remove the black from my toes, when he went to cut away the black on the big toe, their was a lot more damage than he had at first thought. Consequently he amputated my big toe in A & E. Only took 30 minutes, but not stitched, I was told it would heal eventually. Still going back to hospital for dressing changes to the operation wounds and the toe, after nearly 4 months. Now I know the staff in A & E very well.

Look after your injury. The time taken to get serious is very short.

    Good luck.

  12. I have met so many Walter Mitty's in my time in Thailand. All seem to have a Phd in ''Bullshit'' Now my house is a ''bullshit'' free zone.......Farangs are not welcome. My wife doesn't really understand ''bullshit'', she just asks me.......Why does ********** tell so many lies? I think she is a good judge of character.

The name Walter Mitty and the derivative word "Mittyesque"[6] have entered the English language, denoting an ineffectual person who spends more time in heroic daydreams than paying attention to the real world, or more seriously, one who intentionally attempts to mislead or convince others that he is something that he is not.

  13. I have sold a few houses, both through a local real estate agent, well, that is what he calls himself, and sold some independantly.

I would choose to sell on my own every time. I have got a higher selling price on 2 occasions, and not had to part with 3% commission, plus whatever extras are paid at the land office that I had no control over.

If you sell yourself, I would suggest plenty of good quality pictures, the fullest of descriptions together with what is of interest in the immediate vicinity, and don't forget measurements.

One thing I learnt..........you can sell anything if the price is right. But now is a buyers market.

  14. I can personally recommend the Wattana Hospital in Udon.

PM me if you would like phone numbers of English speaking staff, and the name of the doctor that I think would specialize in this procedure.

I have already had bladder stones removed, and will have the majority of my prostate removed next week.
