  1. The incident filmed on Monday is likely to do little to try and improve the image of Pattaya, something which the tourism officials have been eager to do in recent years.

Improving Pattaya's image would be a disaster and turn it in a ghost town. People come here because it is SIN CITY, beside a few Russian families and Chinese tour busses.

Wow BrainLife your first post on here and yet you seem to be an expert on Pattaya-I am here for the culture and thainess thumbsup.gif

And why shouldn't he be. I was here over 20 years before I put my 1st comment on this site. I think I had a fair idea of how things worked by then.

  2. " But a local environment group warned that petroleum production in the area would severely affect nearby villagers' lives because of the pollution the drilling would emit. "

Presumably the villagers have abandoned using their own cars, motorbikes & iron-buffaloes, to reduce local-impact of burning petroleum products ? wink.png

And if the gas will be piped to a site sixteen miles away, wouldn't that be removing the current problem, from their immediate vicinity ... they should welcome construction of the pipeline ! facepalm.gif

The pipeline will not remove the need for a flare at the well head location or separtion plant, if that what they have there, not sure how its all set up

So they will build a pipeline, to carry away the gas produced to where it can be used productively, yet still be flaring gas at the start of the pipeline rather than sending it away, doesn't make much sense to me ?

    I can understand flaring gas, at an oil-production well-head, it's an unwanted/uncommercial by-product.

Would any of our more-expert posters care to comment, on why the current flaring (for test-purposes) seems to be producing so much pollution, in this particular case ? Is that normal ?

I suspect the protests are just a way of local villagers trying to get some money / jobs etc out of Apico.

As for continued flaring at the start of the pipeline - this is quite normal. In simple terms, say for example the well needs to be shut in at the down safety hole valve, pressure above the valve needs to be bled down. The fastest and safest way to do this is by burning the gas close to the well. A limited amount of gas should always be burning as a pilot for such burning. The last thing you want to worry about in event of an emergency is lighting the gas.

It is also quite common to have flaring off points staged along the length of a pipeline when it is on land.

  3. I never was required to do a 90 day check in in Iran, Morocco, Malaysia, Taiwan or South Korea. There are no 90 day check ins in the USA unless you are a patrolled convict or in the EU for that matter. The only requirement for resident visa holders was to go to the local police station and register a new address.

I think this rule was just a whim that seemed like a good idea to give face to some minister and generate a little cash.

Dont know where the "generate a little cash" comes in as there is no cost to a 90 day report. In fact it just increases the admin for absolutely no gain that I can see.

Incorrect. I am sure that a large volume of cash is derived from late reporting fines.

I don't know why everyone does not report on-line - it is so easy!

I'll give it a try on line, but I am not hopeful. I can't even figure out how to get an avatar in the corner of my posts. Best leave it to my seven year old son to sort out.
    g

So what type of visa did you have when in all those countries?

I know that on a UK passport you only get 90 days on arrival and this is supposed to be non extendable.

Are you saying you just breeze up to immigration in Iran or Morocco and stamp you in with a smile for as long as you want to stay?

    Something is missing here.

  4. never any winners in a fight when the police are involved in any country, winner goes to jail loser looser to hospital, no matter who started it.

in my opinion better to be tried by 12 than nursed by 1

    vv

Or in this case loser goes to hospital then moves on to jail.

I wonder if the police will have managed to lose the cctv footage that showed the guy trying to get away from the rich bully boys?

  5. The guy was nothing more than a low life thug and bully who lived by ripping off other foreigners but wasn't adverse to stealing from locals or his employers as well. After he ran away from trouble in Pattaya he continued his antics in Angeles City. He was actually on his way home from his bar when the street he turned into was blocked and they filled him full of holes. The girl (Thai I think) on the back of the bike was unharmed.

I saw more people celebrating his demise than sad about it.

  6. Wow finally, justice is too slow in Thailand especially when rich people are involved. Its good that the guy finally has to go to jail. I always thought it was a farce when he did not have to go to jail. Finally some justice.

Next on the list red bull and the teenager that hit the minivan with people in it.

Vorayuth Yoovidhaya, the Red Bull Heir, will NEVER serve time for his crime.. And was it really a crime or an awful accident ? Shit happens in life and I think this spoilt young man hit the motorcyclist by accident and then panicked ..

when he realised the driver was a policeman. The policeman's family accepted ten million bahts in compensation. Will help to fill the space left by the dead policeman. This is Thailand and it's the way it works here. Let the young guy alone and let him live his life. He has to have that on his conscience forever. wai.gif

Do you really believe it will bother his conscience?

His only concern will be in not going to jail..

  7. I'm happy to see the baht slide , the further the better . When I first came it was 70baht to the pound stirling , but every little counts .

When I first came over it was 35 to the pound Stirling, only went up after the Asian crash.

Exactly. Many people don't realise this or have forgotten.

It was virtually fixed at 25 to the USD which made it around 35 to the Pound.

Looking historically at other Asian currencies it should probably be around 38-39 to the USD right now.
