I want to know if I should harshly condemn them in my mind or not.

If it is not a troll, he needs serious help.

Please help him find the serious help he needs. I guess you're talking about the boyfriend who took the pictures?

    Whoosh!!!

Oh my god, seriously? That's about the most ironic thing you could post at this point^^^^^ [edited post to add 'smh']

  2. They weren't connected to the young lady in another thread 'trying to sell postcards made from her boyfriend's photographs'--were they?

As to Hippies still being around--the original ones, some of whom are still alive and kicking, are hanging out but you wouldn't recognize them as such--the new ones, who look like Hippies, seem to have credit cards and Bank Accounts, and probably a place in a University to return to, after the trip. Is their 'trip' any different from the earlier versions, for sure it is, is it any less important, don't reckon.

That story would make a lot of sense with what I observed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  3. Religion is creepy? Hippies do religion now? How do you know they were hippies? Which hippie tribe did they belong to? Were they wearing underwear? Were they speaking hippie talk?

They just lost their dog and were showing pictures of it to people in an effort to find it. They do not need to be absolved.

lol, they weren't looking for a lost dog. It wouldn't fit with all their plastic bags and children on the two-stroke they were driving. And yes religion is creepy.

Can anyone absolve them!? Ignore the lost dog theory. They were asked to 'please leave our family alone', they were being a nuisance but I want to know if I should harshly condemn them in my mind or not.

  4. Thailand is not Amsterdam. Smoke weed in Thailand and prepare for the outcome. That is the law here. Right or wrong. He was stupid and should now be punished for it.

I made the decision to quit weed when I decided to move to Asia. Not worth the risk to me. As an expat you have to make these kinds of choices or face what this guy will go through now. But in the end, it was his choice to make. No regrets, no excuses.

Nope. Weed is easy to come by here and everyone does it. What are you even talking about?

  5. Are you kidding me. Australia has 5 of the world's 10 deadliest spiders, go swimming in the seas and you might get permanently paralysed by the Irkunji jelly fish, bar-room brawls are far more likely, and you can die of thirst if you broke down in the outback. No, I wouldn't recommend setting foot in Australia. Nope, never!

You forgot to mention the sharks, snakes and crocodiles cheesy.gif

And the Middle East teenagers in Lakemba and Bankstown facepalm.gif

Wow I can't believe you survived vicious pants-soiling you constantly underwent from being scared of brown people in Sydney. You are a survivor.

  6. I am in my 4th month

And NO after 6 months you cannot read and write Thai.

    0-3 leaning alphabet and syllabs

3-6months You are learning separate words

Maybe the OP couldn't read or write any of the alphabet. I don't think anyone has suggested that he should be able to read and write fluently after 6 months.

He can speak Thai after 6 months when Thai people study English for decades and cannot utter a word

Why would you say something so stupid? Almost everyone here can speak at least some English. Are you joking?

  7. You wrote, "Top 100 "emerging economies" globally you won't find them in the top 300."

MAHIDOL has a very good medical school. If you don't know you shouldn't post.

Not good enough to practice medicine in the UK without further medical education. I know two who graduated from Mahidol and both had to do further study in the UK before being able to work here at the level they expected whistling.gif it may have changed but i doubt it.

Thai degrees are barely equal to a UK diploma a Thai masters is even more useless.

Thailand Masters Degree (Plan A, research based) Is only considered comparable to British Bachelor (Honours) degree standard Masters Degree (Plan B limited research) Is considered comparable to British Bachelor degree standard.

So you can study for often nearly twice as long in Thailand for half the quality then youll have to go study much more again after if you want to keep up with your international peers. What a nightmare and drain on both time and money.

Thai education top to bottom is on the whole rubbish.

Exactly! That doesn't even mention the fact that standard Bachelor's degrees from the US are the equivalent of a first class honours from a UK school so that even proves your point further!

  8. .

Now we just need some Creative Thai Teenagers capable of raising themselves off the couch?

    .

Sad sack alert. There are lots of bright active teens in bkk and everywhere else. Sorry to break that to you :'(

Obviously Irony and Humour, when combined are lost to you.

Here ... laugh.png ... does that help you now?

    .

This is you now --> sad.png This is what I wish for you this holiday season --> smile.png

  9. I googled some of his "explanations" and they came up verbatim on one of the dictionary sites wink.png

lolololol link to the site then. hahahahahahahaha I can't express how much I'm laughing at you right now with text. Maybe a linguist could do it better

You're safe now -- your nonsense has been deleted from this thread wink.png

But what you know is true can never be deleted from your heart. You'll just have to wait to forget that you were schooled and embarrassed. I doubt you'll do this again, so everyone wins.

  10. An ED for an education institution will typically have less questions attached to them. I don't think for-profit schools (language or otherwise - since they tend to be grouped together) will disappear -- but I do expect sooner or later you will start seeing the regulations more tightly enforced and schools losing their ability for visa education students. There are for-profit schools here in Thailand, where public schools would not teach the subject.... things like flight schools etc. A school in the may get judged on the quality of their students - so a school with too many students having troubles will endanger the schools authorization.

Yeah and it might be difficult for the bottom line of FP-language school businesses if customers are required to attend as though they are proper students in terms of classroom capacity. I wonder if MacWalen would like to comment on that. Can these business accommodate 80+% customer class attendance? How close to 100%? Or does the business model figure in a much lower attendance rate to be highly profitable?

  11. A lot of people talk about those wonderful cheap tourist visas, so I guess the assumption is that you will be able to get those double and triple entry tourist visas forever, right? Those who complain so much about ED visas and how much trouble going to school is etc. might be up for a very hard landing in the near future. Remember my words. Shortsightedness of future toursit visa issues of some members is embarrassing.

BKKSnowBird, good try but you are wrong. ED visa are not going anywhere, follow a few easy rules and no problems at all. ED visas are beneficial to the country actually. I am not worried at all. Want a bet?

ED visas are bootstraps for the for-profit language school/get a visa to stay in Thailand business model. ED visas aren't going anywhere and neither are tourist visas, but being able to get an ED visa through for-profit language schools might be on its way out. If you want to be sure about your status, enroll at a public university.

    That's a burn

What credibility do you have to make statements on the future of tourist visas?

jspill I guess I have a lot of common sense. It is now just a matter of time. I am sure of that and I am a betting man. I don't get things wrong often.

Okay, but to be fair you are just guessing wildly and you have a direct interest in getting people to believe ED visas are the way to go. You're probably the last person to take advice from on this topic. I'm not mad at you or anything, I have friends in your school and they say it's good, no visa problems, etc.

  14. I've done my last extension on my current ED Visa today, no issues and I've never encountered any issues on my re-entries from abroad. I would have to get a new Visa at the end of March next year, but I'm with Marphuket on this one. It's not worth the risk of getting into trouble. I will probably change visa at the end of March to either Tourist or the Elite Visa, I will still go to school to learn Thai because I enjoy it, but honestly I don't need to have problems on a simple re-entry by a random check of someone who may decide that my language skills aren't good enough.

No complaining, it's just a fact that the government is trying to crack down on people on ED visas from private schools. They are of the opinion that many people abuse it to stay long term to work or do other illegal things. Maybe that's true, I don't know but I will try avoid getting into trouble. Maybe the chances are low of someone getting into trouble like this, but it's not worth the risk if you have alternative options. And they seem to like Tourists and people on Elite visas according to what I have read.

Yeah but I believe your story about not having any problems before I believe (no offense) what you've read. These crackdowns and what not for example are pretty much fabricated. Everything is going business as usual. I know first hand about my own experience and that of my housemates who have no problems. One of them attends classes regularly, one doesn't so much. Never ever any problems. Going on trips outside Thailand and back: no problem. No needing to carry stupid amounts of cash, no needing to take a Thai quiz. No-questions-asked extensions. I frankly don't believe the exaggerated third-hand accounts. There is no evidence of it. You can still get multiple tourist visas, etc. I think it's important recognize rumors for what they are.
