  1. Thanks again. She was turned down for the tourist visa, however, they didn't stamp her passport. I would assume that there would be a computer entry that states what happened. We will try again this year and do more research before we do so. I've heard it has gotten much harder from an immigration angle, but not so much the tourist visa. Our problem is that we don't look too good on paper and I'd more than likely have to file a I-134 form with someone that would guarantee her stay/departure. I found a few immigration forums I'll start reading up on. thanks again for your comments.

  2. Yeah it may seem inconvenient to have to carry in my case 40,000 baht... In my experience, hassles are relative. I'd much rather have the hassle of preventing an issue than knowingly put myself and my gf in a powerless position where the cost can become exponential in a very short time. Any kind of forced separation could in my mind lead to the very least intense anxiety and a lot worse. No thanks. I'll take the sure route here.

  3. Great information. Thanks. Yes, I get it that some of you can get too much of it and likely are some of the helpful minds out there helping some of us not all that in control of this wacked out and incredible place. so thanks for bearing with the same ole information.

Ok, I know this should go into the Myanmar forum, however, my gf and I are finally going to Myanmar. Hopefully if all works well, she will get approved to come back to Thailand using her new and real Myanmar passport on a TR visa. My question is this: Will she have to have 20,000 Baht too? Is there anyway we can show that we're together sharing expenses? or is it best to just both have 20,000 and keep it simple? (did I just answer my own question....) Thanks

If you can wait 3 days, go for a tourist visa at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, Here are some tips https://www.myanmarvisa.com/bangkok.htm

Can you return to the Myanmar Embassy one week later? I can only do 1 or 2 days. But then again the next message says the cost radically jumped on the visa. The eVisa seems like the way to go now.

Rcoyote, Just a couple things you might want to be aware of --

    1. Last time I was at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok, they'd doubled the price of the tourist visa (3 day wait) to thb 1600; so there's no longer that big of a difference with the $50 evisa (which I've read is now accepted at some overland crossings).

    2. When I got my Thai tourist visa in Yangon, I submitted a reservation for a hotel in Thailand (just 1 night, & via agoda), but no flight ticket, and had no problems.

Thanks, I imagine since I have an apartment in Bangkok, I could show my contract or last receipt of rent rather than a reservation.   And also are there any downsides of the eVisa? it sounds a great deal easier.

  6. This is very helpful information. I am a US citizen. Am I right to assume that if I carry 20,000 baht between the borders of Myanmar and Thailand I will not need to show proof of a flight out (for both countries)? That would simplify some of my travel plans. And also, is there a better visa to get for a trip to Myanmar (1-3 week trip) if I need to return to Myanmar within 60 days? for example: Must I reapply for another eVisa into Myanmar? I will be traveling by air. or is there a way to avoid paying for the visa twice? Thanks.

extra information: I will be getting a TR visa in Myanmar for Thailand. My job contract will end so I will be changing to a TR visa in Myanmar. I am looking to live in either Myanmar in the future, but still have an apartment in Thailand.

  7. Hi,

I know this is simple for some of you, but I get a little lost if there are a few extra moving pieces. I am finishing my teaching contract and need to leave the country to get a TR visa. I want to go to Myanmar and get a 60 day visa and likely extend the visa by either 30 day via immigration in BKK or fly out of the country again. Because my GF is from Myanmar and I find a new job in Myanmar I would like to arrange 2 trips to Myanmar. Can you help clarify or make any suggestions.

When I fly into Myanmar I need a visa and apparently proof of a flight out of Myanmar (I would like to buy a ticket when I'm sure I want to return if possible) . This visa is good for a 28 day stay and valid 3 months - single entry.  Ok So, I'll stay in Myanmar 2 weeks and fly back to Thailand. Now, for my trip to Thailand I need proof that in 60 days I will exit Thailand... ok, so I fly back to Myanmar within 60 days. Can I still use the Myanmar Visa and pay a re-entry fee (1000 baht I believe?) Where do I get this document? Can I get it at the Airport in BKK? And again, I have to show proof of a flight out of Myanmar...which again, I'd rather decide when I'm in Myanmar just in case I want to stay longer.  And then my return to Thailand... again another proof of an exit? I've heard many members suggest buying the cheapest ticket and then likely just throwing it away... Anyhow... I think I get it, but a little clarity may save me some money and hassles. Ie. Should I entertain a Multiple Entry visa? It seems paying for re-entry is a safer and likely cheaper idea. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean. Can you provide some details, please?

What is true is that if you enter on the last day of your visa (enter before xx/month) then you will be stamped in with another 60 days which can be extended by 30 days at immigration.

Sorry I'm jumping in here without reading the 120 pages before it. I'll be going to Myanmar after my job contract ends. I will buy a round trip ticket. I would like to get a 60 day Tourist visa that I can extend back in Thailand. I'm a US citizen.  Do you know if I can do this at the airport in Yangon? or more likely at the Thai embassy in Myanmar? And would I have any requirements ie. proof of income or $ amount etc.? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

  9. I'm a US citizen working in Thailand, but have given my notice and want to visit Myanmar. When I come back to Thailand I won't have a job, so I'd like to get a 60 day Tourist visa that can be extended 30 days in Bangkok. Where can I find out more information about this and alternative visas? I have a Myanmar GF and we are looking to possibly start a business in Myanmar, but we are in the early stages, so I would like to travel a few times back and forth Yangon, Bangkok. Can I get a multiple visa along with the 60 day? And do you have any idea of the costs?

    thanks.

  10. What if we only have a choice between having a baby in Myanmar or Thailand. My gf is from Myanmar. It seems there could be some advantages for the kid if he was born in Thailand.

Apparently, healthcare is a lot cheaper and easier to deal with in Myanmar, however, I have had great experiences with Thailand's health care. I get it.. as long as you have money. I don't have any health insurance, so I'll have to check on the prices too and weigh all things: salary, benefits etc....

    thanks

If it's anything like living with a Thai girlfriend, it will start out great, but turn into a nightmare a few months down the road.

Being single does have a lot going for it.  555

Maybe, but we've long been passed the few months.. Nearly 3 years.. She's quite different than any Thai girl I dated etc. Should work - we'll see. Maybe you just like being single - definitely better than a bad catch.

  12. Thanks - some great comments here. One strange scenario would be that I get a job in Myanmar and then we cannot get married or live together. But up until that point I will keep gathering information. I've heard from many recent sources that a foreigner can marry a Myanmar gal in Myanmar. Lots has changed, however, I would imagine that there is still a lot of greasing that may have to be done. I will take it as it comes and appreciate everyones feedback.

Unless ur married or working, u wont get anything but a tourist visa for Myanmar.

Rents are very high as well and not sure they will rent to a farang that does not have a wp. All my friends that live in Myanmar and have apts, have wp's

Fiancee visas for traveling to the us are expansive  and take at least 6 months to obtain and UNLESS you intend of living in the states do not suggest u  got his route.

getting her a tourist visa... does she have land,  her own house, a healthy bank account,( showing deposits every month for the past year), a job?  without these.... forget it.

also u will need someone to sponsor her from the states as u dont live there.

Hi PR, Did any of your friends get married in Myanmar? I'm obviously searching for different answers and opportunities. I would like to stay in Myanmar, but not being able to live together for an extended time frame isn't my idea of a good plan. Some of your comments have given me a good dose of reality. I realize that any plan I decide to try will take time. Time involves my next job and also next home.. So at the moment at least I'm dealing in broad strokes figuring what will be a smart and doable plan. So firstly, have you heard anything good about getting married in Myanmar? For me it seems all things considered this would be the fastest way for my gf and I to live and work in Myanmar and then take the next 6 months to a year getting a visa to visit my folks in the US... that's actually doable.

Thanks - I get a feeling you've experienced plenty - appreciate your take on things.  Anyone else please jump in too. Thanks.

  14. Thanks - that helps. Looks like I will need to come up with a long term plan. From what you and others have said - I think a tourist visa is out. She will need to be a dependent of mine. I do currently have a job, however, I won't in a few months. Does it make more sense to get married Myanmar/Thailand (I've heard Thailand) and then work toward a spouse visa for a US visit? or will that take as long to get as the fiancé visa?  I mostly concerned with ability to get the visa.

No she doesn't have land/house/healthy bank account etc. She does have a real passport and her mother has a house with her name on it, but I'd rather not depend on her side... thus marriage, but still on the planning and researching end.

    thanks again, S

assuming I do get a 1 month rental with help of her family etc. Do you think we can live together? Or even have consistent overnight stays? I heard in the past this could be problematic especially in Hotels.

  15. I ended up paying the fine. Guy in front of my had the same issue and was having a hard time getting that he f'd up. They actually opened up another window for him since he locked down all 3 Immigration workers trying to make him understand he had to pay up. They were ecstatic when I paid immediately and then told the guy to pay for his lesson and not do it again. Thanks for the input everyone... It actually helped to know I likely wasn't going to win on this one. It won't ever happen again.. At least this screw up.

  16. Hi,

I am a US citizen I live and work in Thailand and have been living with my Myanmar GF for 2 years. We want to visit my parents in the US.  We want to get an apartment in Myanmar to get the right visas etc. But there are many questions we need to get answers before we commit. For one, I have heard we cannot live together in Myanmar i.e.. in a hotel. I'm sure we could live with family, but I'd prefer a little more personal space.  Obviously she could live with her mother during the process, but I'd just like to hear from anyone who has been through this scenario.

My understanding so far is that a spousal or fiancé visa are our best bets to be able to visit my parents in the US (assuming we want to be married.. we do) So, I'm looking for pros and cons of getting married in Thailand, Myanmar or the US. I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences in these matters. Thanks.

  17. thanks - that is some great information. We aren't pregnant, however, we did have a close call recently. All of it made we want to think about how to go about it when and if we decide to make a kid. We're pretty solid and I 've earned enough miles to know it. And yes, I am an American citizen.

Do you know of any advantage of getting married in the US as compared to Thailand or Myanmar? My understanding is Thailand is preferred over Myanmar. I am assuming US is preferred over Thailand as well. but there is a certain fine line between all of the choices. ie. I've heard we can't live together in Myanmar if we are not married. We want to live in Myanmar while we get the best visa (spouse or finance visa).. still in the process of figuring it all out.

So again, thanks... I'm still a little random sorting it out.
