  1. Yeah it annoys me no end the damage done to my new (good quality) "T's" when visiting the in-laws for a month.

They own a crappy twin tub washing machine.

I see they don't fill enough water to wash OR enough to rinse properly. Also, these twin tubs they have a switch to divert the water into the spin tub, they never do that which gets loads of soap out ...but worst of all they pour loads of soap powder in!

They don't use the measuring cup :(

My way to keep clothes lasting is simple. Use a front loader and use the cup to measure the soap powder. "T's" will last.

  2. I guess this is related.. my neighbor at work in Oz bought up this news across the office:

"Thailand’s military government warned women on March 16 against posting selfies of the lower half of their breasts – a social media trend that has gone viral – saying their actions could violate the country’s computer crime laws".

...and a fellow over the office yelled "yet they let ping-pong-balls fly".

What am I, married to a Thai meant to reply? Nothing smile.png

  3. 28 Degrees for credit (purchases)

Citibank Plus for debit (withdrawing cash)

Both good, master/visa fx rates, pay off the credit every month and it'll cost you virtually nothing. Citibank Plus gives you fee free international SWIFT transfers too - just make sure to select receiver pays fees (to Thailand, at least...)

This is interesting, so you can make international transfers through Citibank Plus account to an account in Thailand, no fees.

Do they show the exchange rate at the time?

    receiver pays fees

Any idea of what fees would be?

    Cheers.

  4. Yes this one...

    http://www.28degreescard.com.au/

    No annual fee

No international transaction fees on purchases

    No currency conversion fees

Up to 55 days interest free on purchases

    Exchange rate is OK too.

    Debit Card: Citibank Plus

    Credit Card: 28 Degrees

Not so good now. It charges $35 if you withdraw at an ATM from a positive balance ie. you load your card up with cash. Still good for credit purchases.
Maybe you are talking a cash advance which charges 3% or $4, whichever is greater?

    http://www.28degreescard.com.au/credit-card-features/interest-rates-fees.html

You are right. But about 18 months ago they changed the fine print and now all cash withdrawals are deemed cash advance whether you have a credit balance or not. It was good while it lasted.

I was loading up the 28 Degrees card before this change too. That's when I got the Citibank Plus Debit Card and now use both.

Besides, apparently loading up the 28 Degrees Card above your limit, this money was not covered by fraud.

By the way, remember to advise these banks when you are in Thailand as I've had my card locked by their security when making a withdrawal. No big deal to call them when in Thailand and get it fixed though.

  5.

i know this already. it will be suicide. but no immediate or even short term need. one step in front of the other going nowhere special till then.

As morbid as this sounds, and since we all have to go, and no one wants to suffer too much or too long or at all, what are the best quickest easiest etc... methods???

    Ulysses G. method

...but with the added extra of an elastic band & plastic bag to be sure.

  6. My O-A visa it had a "Date of Issue" and a "Enter Before" date giving me one year to enter Thailand. Upon entering Thailand I received a stamp allowing me a one-year stay. Had to do the 90-day notification of residence at a local immigration office during that year.

Good thread, thanks for all this info.

I'm planning soon enough too and think I'd apply for the O-A visa in Australia. By the above comment, I guess with this visa you don't have to report every 90 days, only the once?

A few days prior to the "Enter Before" date, I took a quick trip to a border crossing, exited Thailand and then entered back into Thailand. I got another stamp for one-year stay. So getting the Non-Immigrant Visa Category “O-A” (Long Stay) from your home country will allow you (almost) two years in Thailand. Reminder: If you exit Thailand after your "Enter Before" date, you must get a "Re-Entry permit" before leaving to maintain your visa's validity.

Why are you given another 1 year when you cross a border? Do you need to report ever 90 days this second year?

I suppose when the 2 years is up, you may ether go back home and get another O-A visa and do the above thing again or stay in Thailand and apply for an extension by moving money into a Thai bank?

  7. I think getting your wife a new ID and name could cause problems when you come to apply for a visa extension based on marriage to a Thai national.

    Thanks Arkady.

You are right but she already has her new ID. Like mentioned in this thread she had been searching for her records over a few years but we had not gone to the alternate government offices you mention.

No idea how to rectify the marriage problem with this new ID, like you say I'd be a bigamist :)

The only solution at the moment I can see is for me to stay in Thailand ("unmarried") on a retirement visa.

  8. This is probably about taxes. When you buy the land, you also decare the price at which the land is bought/sold. The land office uses this to calculate the taxes due on the selling of the land based on this. Often the declared price is much lower than the real paid price.

The land offices can check the price and calculate their own estimate, but that is hardly ever done.

Ahh OK. Yes, the owner said they will pay the tax on the land.

Anyway, if that's the case they have lost a deal trying to save a percent or two.

    Cheers.

  9. Thanks.

The owner refuses to accept anything other then a bag of baht and will not reduce the price. We will give it a miss.

Also, I'm thinking in Australia there is no way I would buy anything without using a conveyancer / solicitor to make the necessary checks and transaction. How crazy to even think to buy without one in Thailand.

If/when we find a place we are interested, I'll see if I can get a recommendation here for a solicitor.

    Cheers.

  10. About buying land. Still considering buying a small block in Phuket and have made an offer but I'm smelling something scamish.

Firstly, the owner works in the Lands Office where the land would be transferred to my wife.

Secondly, this owner wants the full payment in cash. I think this is a rather unusual way to pay a large sum as this in cash and no record of the transaction. The owner who works at the office said "if your worried, get a security guard".

Any ideas what the owner would be playing at?

    Thanks.

  11. Depends upon your particular Land Office. Some may requre a signed letter from you stating that you did not give her th money for the purchase, others may reqire that you forgo any interest or rights to the land, and some may even refuse to allow your wife to purchase it. You mileage may vary here in LOS

I'm interested in this too as considering buying land in Phuket.

Just wondering, seeing foreigners has no claim to land why would the wife even mention anything about having a foreign husband at all?

  12. Thanks - too easy!

Went into a DTAC shop and got two SIM's. Was a bit painful with the tom who couldn't understand my Thai wife or myself for a while though.

Wife speaks Thai with an Aussie accent and sometimes gets blank looks.

A 1GB for wife's iPhone and 3GB for my HTC mobile that I plug in my laptop for internet.

I think it is these plans here...

    http://www.happy.co....mid=368〈=en

Cost about 1200 baht for both including the initial SIM cost. Not sure what that was.

    Cheers, YBB.

Edit: think it's that Happy plan because I keep getting dam_n SMS's from "Happy".
