  1. There is a good dermatologist in Ubon near the Mun River. His clinic is on the one way road Phrommathep and the corner of Luang road. If you drive along Phrommathep Road it is on the right hand side. I am not sure if he is able to treat skin cancer but worth a try if you live in the Ubon area. Long queues. Open in the evening and on weekends.

  2. A easier way to give directions to this shop, if indeed it is the same shop, is that it is on the same street as Smile Restaurant but on the opposite side on a corner just past the Wat Sri Ubon school. The corner of Sinarong road and Supat Road

  3. Ubon is getting a new water park called Thonglor Vista that's scheduled to open in early December. They have a Facebook page here. There are at least 6 other lap pools in town and a water park at the Sunee hotel as well.

Good for the family but I would like a decent 50 m lap pool for exercise. I wonder why that isn't planned in the same complex?

Didn't you see my link? There are several good 50m lap pools that have almost nobody in them if you go at the right time of day. I prefer Nari.

Yes I saw that that link and I know all those swimming pools. I wrote "decent" 50 m pool. The university pool is quite a distance out of town (16 km), open after 4 pm and is now closed until January 2015 for repairs. The sports school pool is not well-maintained and the water quality is not desirable, Nari school pool is ok but lately they don't seem to want people to swim during the day and in the evenings most people swim across and so it is difficult to get good lengths in.

  4. Why this big hang up about learning English at these Ubon schools? I wouldn't even worry about English. if one of the parents is a native English speaker learn at home, read English books and watch English movies. The whole English programme is a farce in most schools. Send your children there to learn Thai, incorrect right-wing history, some science and some math. Forget the English programs. Just go through the Thai program.

  5. You need to own the car outright. You can not take a car into Laos if you are still paying off the finance. The owner of the car must be with the car. That is, you can not borrow someone elses car that has all the documents etc for taking a car into Laos. Though I do believe that one can get special papers within Thailand to drive someone elses car but not all check points accept this.

Plenty of discussion on these sites about how easy it is to take a car into Laos. Getting a car passport also is very easy.

  6. After you finish teaching at the school you can continue with the social security health system by making all the contributions yourself.

This is what Terry in an earlier post told you.

If you remain in the system for 12 months, you can continue on your own if you lose eligibility through work. The cost for paying on your own is 432 baht per month.

If you do not continue I believe that you will be repaid a lump sum of your contributions over the years which in some cases could be over 100,000 baht.

However, I would strongly advise you to take out private health insurance now for yourself and your whole family. There are family packages available for both health and accident insurance.

  7. There are some selective herbicides that will control Mimosa pudica. When spraying be careful not to distrub the leaves, otherwise the leaves will fold up, reducing leaf surface area and making the herbicides ineffective.

For biological control the best way is hand digging or using certain mulches. In larger areas, sheep will control its spread.
