  1. People said similar things 50 years ago, or 100, or probably any time before that. The current younger generation will probably say something similar when they get old.

This is less about the state of the world today, and more about the inflexibility that comes with age.

Disagree. It's the rate of change which is the scary thing now. That, and f#####t politicians.

You can go back to Juvenal in Roman times for references to the youth of today.

In hindsight, I lived in a golden age in Australia. I participated in the first mining boom as an analytical chemist, and went to a remote area. I bought a house in Melbourne, and paid off the mortgage in 18 months. Show me any middle class worker who could even dream of doing that today.

Later, I travelled the world as a technical expert in the steel industry. Our politicians have basically destroyed manufacturing industry in Australia, What I did could never happen now. Go to America and see the remnants of US Steel, LTV, Inland and Bethlehem - same there. Or Detroit, which is now no more than a ghetto. Or the UK Steel industry, don't the Indians own it now?

The levels of debt among nations that should have known better is now unprecedented. Permit me to doubt the inflexibility of age has anything to do with that.

  2. English is a language of complex consonants. Thai is a language of complex vowels and tones. Ask most Thais to pronounce English words with combined consonants e.g. cloud, refrigerator and they struggle. Yes, that's another one. Just as we struggle with what looks to be the same word in Thai with phonetic spelling for white, knee, and rice. Most Thais probably think Westerners are tone deaf.

Easiest solution, as other posters have said, is just spell it differently.

  3. You guys (usa ) certainly have different system to OZ. We apply for a national police check.

Does your "state patrol" cover all history in the whole of USA?

Perhaps they should be applying for Australian citizenship - we give it to everyone else, including drug dealers and terrorists.

I understand the American IRS makes the ATO look like a benign and friendly uncle in terms of tax matters.

  4. I really would love to see some initiative from the Thai authorities on this. If a falang is willing to just keep rolling over the 800,000 baht on term deposit, all immigration should need is a bank book showing this. Silly me- I'm asking for intelligence from a bureaucracy.

They will accept fixed term accounts but you have to sure they do not roll over during the 3 months or they can reject an application if it rolls over to another account.

Yes, I realise that. However, I fail to understand what their thinking is. It's still in the bank, is it not?

  5. Oh, I'm sure many feel certain ThaiVisa keyboard warriors as irritating...I know I do....have a few in mind. But there are other ways to handle them via the forum rules/reporting certain posts/ignoring them/etc. I don't see any good coming out of this topic since it no doubt will upset certain keyboard warriors since they would be specifically named and that would be a personal and subjective call in many cases.

    9) You will not post inflammatory messages on the forum, or attempt to disrupt discussions to upset its participants, or trolling. Trolling can be defined as the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet by posting controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

You may be right. However, I do have the perception TV is degenerating in terms of posters who use language which skirts the boundaries of offence.

While I accept it's OK for people to disagree, that is not the same as disagreeable.

  6. While ThaiVisa has its POTY competition, I'd like to know who is considered to be the most irritating poster on TV. Let's not get into sub-categories such as most vapid, condescending etc. Feel free to include me if you must. I have a couple of candidates in mind; however, I'd like to get other opinions.

  7. Three one hour massages a week at 240 baht ( 200 baht + 40 baht tip ) means a live person, who can work on individual niggles and aches, would last me over 7 years before the 269,000 baht was exhausted.

Good luck to the OP, a massage chair is more convenient. However, as always, renting is cheaper than owning for those who don't win a lottery.

  8. It's always a big risk to give passport and such official documents to someone you don't know.

I prefer lose time and check for my visa by myself than entrust my passport to anyone non official.

Why do people do it.I do the time honoured way of doing it my self.At least i have control of the situation.

I get the feeling you don't live in Chiang Mai, as you wouldn't be saying you have control of the situation.

  9. Aluminium has been linked to Alzheimer's more than life expectancy. My Grandmother used to brew tea in an aluminium teapot and ended up with severe Alzheimer's (she forgot who I was) and we suspected it was the aluminium.

This is an urban myth. The link between aluminium and Alzheimer's was made in a study where brain plaques typical of dementia were found to have high levels of aluminium - hardly surprising when an aluminium microtome was used to prepare the samples.

The modern hypothesis of the cause of Alzheimer's is the plaques are caused by a series of microstrokes.

  10. OK Einstein when you start to insinuate that you were in some way trying to set humour as an excuse for your lack of any sensible comments, in answering point for point statements in my posts, you are scraping the barrel and attempting a smoke screen away, from the fact that your point of view, doesn't really cut any ice in the real world where I exist

But go on, I will go with the flow on this one and let you off the hook for not answering my post in a chronological and meaningful manner.

You realised that you were on a loser with this one and ignored all my reasons for justifying my point of view that dual pricing is very much a Racist action!

Whatever the reason for it and I perfectly accept that economics could be one of them, opportunism is another, greed is another, maybe there are many more.

The fact is that for whatever reason stimulates dual pricing it is only aimed a one specific group and this is the foreigner, ergo Racism Einstein

    Elementary my dear Einstein

Question: What comes before dual pricing

Answer: The Farang for without him there would be no dual pricing

Still raging away, are we? Frothing over the keyboard?

Question: Are the Chinese coming here on the tour buses subject to dual pricing? The Japanese and Koreans?

Answer: I don't know; however, I would be very surprised if they weren't.

Given that Thais, Chinese, Japanese and Koreans are all Asian, the only way you can say dual pricing is racist is if these nationalities are excluded from dual pricing. Otherwise, it's just straight economics - visitors have more money than Thais.

If you can't understand this, I won't be surprised.

  11. Most if not all the Andaman Natl Marine Parks you won't be paying Thai fees. No way. Staff though can be quite empathetic ☺

If you are camping, it can get expensive but after a long season or a number of years returning or a Thai wife. Even paying daily and tent fees, still much cheaper than some ridiculous resort.

Bungalow in the back - b2000

Tent at waters edge - b200

Must be wonderful to get first call on a tsunami so cheaply.

  12. " the cashier refused to give me the Thai rate despite having a work permit. "

Are you Thai ? Because having a work permit one would presume you are not, ergo, you should not pay the Thai national price.

Maybe you're new around here. In the past, having a work permit has entitled one to the Thai rate, although it had always been a little inconsistent with regards to which parks and attractions abided by it.

I doubt it has to do with newness as much as it does with logic.

    Logic? Here?cheesy.gif

  13. It has never been a problem for me... never have givent it a thought since coming from the U.S. My main purpose when I return is to bring back quality stuff I can't get here. Allowed to bags 50lbs each, one is stuff with steak, baby back pork ribs, pull pork, cheese, etc... frozen and if possible vacuum packed, By the time I get here it is still cold but unfrozen. I even go as far as bringing back quality nails and screws.

You can get really good quality screws in Thailand, low cost.

    Stainless steel ones?

Deck screws! The one here no matter where I buy, end up rusting and any force on the top they get stripped.

Oh dear, we do have some serious people on TV. Any force on the top and they get stripped, indeed.cheesy.gif

  14. I'm a troll. Check. I'm Einstein. Check.You're not a racist. Check. It's not rocket science. Check.

Elucidate or elaborate? Up to you. Many sensible reasons? Checkout.

I have to thank you for the mental images you are providing. Apparently Hitler bit the carpet in his rages, do you froth all over your keyboard?cheesy.gif

Assuming you're 100% correct, and it's all racism. What are you going to do about it? What can you do about it? Checkmate.

Have a cup of tea, a Bex, and a good lie down. biggrin.png

Nothing Einstein, I am going to do nothing other than avoid the places that dual charge because that is within my power.

One thing I can do though is to try to impart some common sense or even a little logic on a forum where people like you argue for something that is entirely wrong, immoral and Racist.

Of course I am peeing against the wind but always did like a good debate and in your case a challenge.

The next thing that you will be in favour of is the Thai Bobby letting multiples of 4 Thai people plus a baby in arms ride past on a motorcycle , all without helmets whilst stopping a Farang for having no helmet on.

Same Racism different circumstance but just as wrong and immoral..

You have the stupidity to mention Hitler, dont you realise that if the German majority had not decided to sit back and ignore his antics like you are prepared to do with the dual pricing policy and possibly other fine examples of Thai Racism ,Hitler would not have been able to do what he did.

Einstein please, When in a hole stop digging you mentioned Hitler, the worst example to prove your point you could have ever made and in doing so makes my point very much better then I could have ever done

    l

Oh dear, I'm afraid one of us has a humour deficiency. Never mind, you just stick to your viewpoint. It is entertaining.

It's not racism when a cop lets the Thais go, and stops the falang. It's Economics 101. Thais are skint, falangs have money.

It doesn't take Einstein to work out a simple answer to what you find objectionable with dual pricing. WALK AWAY. And don't forget your helmet.

Did that go through to the wicketkeeper? Or perhaps you have not considered Russian dentistry.......

  16. I often bring car parts, tools, food, coffee, mobile phones and spirits in my checked luggage. Usually around 80 KG. I pay the excess luggage costs.

I was stopped for the first time, due to having 4 suitcases I think, at BKK 3 months ago. They made me empty the entire contents after scanning the lot and tried to make me pay duty on a 12 volt - 240 volt inverter. I explained it was for my personal use as were all the tools and car bits. Eventually they let me go after a fair amount of arguing.

Not a word about all the Kinder Eggs, Coffee, food and drink.

I will be cautious next time. Things seem to be hotting up.

You're reminding me of Radar O'Reilly in M*A*S*H posting a jeep back home piece by piecesmile.png

  17. I brought in 7 large jars of Vegemite on my last flight here. OK, non-Australians don't consider that to be food. To us, it is a sacred breakfast ritual.

Maybe off-topic; however, I've always liked boerewors as a very tasty sausage. There's a bar in Chiang Rai that has Cumberland sausage on its breakfast menu.

No problem bringing that IN to Thailand, but it was a problem taking it OUT of USA.

The security classed Vegemite and peanut butter as a liquid and wouldn't allow it (as hand luggage). It was ok in the suitcase but that had already been sent through.

A guy I used to work with tried to take Vegemite into Libya. Customs thought it was plastic explosive, and made him eat half the jar to prove it wasn't.
