OK .. i am coming back tO the Kingdom in October and i dont want to hang out in BKK at all, not even 1 night, So when i arrive at the airport i just want to make a run in and get a modded Playstation 2 ( iam going to phuket after and the ps2's are way more bahtZ there) And i heard MBK is the place to go for those so :

    1. How do i get to mbk (never been there before) Just tell taxi driver mbk ? or Siam square? or should i speak some thai ?

I will attempt to help you on you luggage, this MIGHT not work!

    1) Go to the transfer desk 1, have your luggage transfered from the incoming flight to the outgoing flight. (You will need to check your luggage, not carry on!) You had better explain your intentions at this point since they would normally issue you a boarding pass that has Transfer stamped all over it. They might just advise you to just leave the luggage, and handle the transfer when you check in at the Domestic Terminal (See #4). In Dubai, I have had baggage sitting for 2-3 days before actually being transfered with no problem.

    2) Go to immigration and officially arrive in-country.

    3) Go to MBK or Panthip Plaza.

    4) Return to airport, go to the domestic terminal and fly down to Phuket, handle your baggage transfer at this time.

    5) Pick up your luggage. (Important step if you have been drinking copious quantities of alcohal while in Bangkok.

    Have a nice flight.......

  3. New ministerial regulation to control on-line games

BANGKOK: --  The cabinet has approved an Interior Ministry proposal on drafting a new ministerial regulation to control computer on-line games, aiming to solve problems caused by children’s addiction to the electronic games.

Government Spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee said after Tuesday's cabinet weekly meeting that Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-Ngam, as a law expert, has been assigned by the cabinet to supervise the drafting of the regulation, which is to provide strict and integrated measures in solving the on-line games-related problems.

"The measures include registration of Internet cafes or on-line game shops, as that applied to clinics and drugstores; otherwise they cannot provide services," he told journalists here.

Dr. Suraponng said that the proposed ministerial regulation would be used as a legal tool to control a wide range of computer materials in various forms, including video games, laser discs, digital radio discs, CD– ROMs, hard discs, and similar others that are  easily accessible to children who tend to be addicted to.

Many studies suggest that playing much of video or on-line games causes adverse effects to children, especially on their physical, mental and emotional health.

For some cases, violence in the games  can lead  to children’s aggressive behaviors

The government spokesman said that Mr. Wissanu would soon call a meeting of

experts from agencies concerned, namely the Interior, Culture, and  Information and Communication Technology Ministries to brainstorm in drafting the regulation and then submit it to the Office of the Council of State for a quick revision.

"It is believed that the new regulation will be an effective measure that can solve the kids’ addiction to on-line games. It’s a serious problem in our society now," he told journalists.

"Prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra told the cabinet that when he visited people in various areas he had heard lots of parents’ complaints about their kids' addiction to on-line games; so the prime minister instructed the Interior  Ministry to find solutions to the problem’, said the government spokesman.

    Interesting thread…..

I can remember when in the USA we had just three television networks, ABC, NBC and CBS. Then came cable TV……. So some people started be-moaning the fact that their were things being broadcast that was harmful to the children, like the late night R-rated movies on Cinemax. Hence the advent of pay-per-view. Basically solved the problem, or did it? Was the problem really what was being offered to the public or was the problem of parental responsibility? WHY were the kids watching TV at 11:30 at night?

Now we have the watchdogs rating the music industry and the computer games “What next?”

When are we going to start holding ourselves as parents responsible for the actions of our children?

I know that the computer is vital for my daughters success in life…… I recognize the dangers of NOT monitoring their consumption ……. I regulate their consumption.

I have no problem with my daughters playing on-line games, but I also make them use educational games to further their education.

Before they can start playing, tasks like homework must be completed! They are limited on the amount of on-line time they have access to……

Furthermore, just to make sure they have activities away from the TV and CRT they participate in after school clubs/activities. And the family goes on trips every weekend, just to get them out of the house and let them experience something different.

They are lucky……. The poor in Thailand are not so lucky, BUT the parents still have the capacity to limit their usage, THEY control the purse strings.

We don’t need the governments assistance in this problem, we need to take on the responsibilities of parentage.

I am no psychologist nor am I an educator. I was just brought up in a time when parents actually accepted responsibility for bringing up their children. And this I learned from them………..

  4. Two flights will arrive on 29-09-05 - don't know what time though but no doubt it will be auspicious.

    Are you sure?

If so, I am rescheduling my flight from Dubai to the 28th! Sure as ###### don't want to land at Suvarnabhumi when I have around 45 minutes to transfer to my flight to Chiangmai, which is from Dom Muang! :o

This could end up being like Buenos Aires, where you arrive at the international terminal then have to take a one hour taxi to get to the domestic airport. :D

  5. I Have an unrestored 1939 Packard sedan that I would like to ship to Thailand. Does anyone know how much of a problem and expense it is to get an antique car through Thai custom?

Well, I have a 1949 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible (Mint condition) in storage in the USA along with a 1973 Datsun 240Z (Mint Condition) just awaiting a way for me to figure out how to avoid any import duties into the kingdom.

The problem with the Olds is that I could never really "Drive" it in Thailand..... there is no place where I could park it easily.

The Z is another story all together, It really likes to be going around 170 km/hr. Just think! Can outrun any of the police, Can make it to Bangkok in less than 5 hours........ Oh Yea! I used to drive this car from Vegas to Reno in around 7 hours and she just flew.... twin Weber carbs do the trick!

Oh.... I also have a 1995 Jeep Wrangler to bring over to get through the flooded streets.... I Love Chiangmai.

IF I can't get these toys into the country, no problem! I have my PPL and will sell the cars to get an airplane here.

  6. not so fast - if the thai police locked up every farang who is doing something illegal, there wouldn't be very many farangs left.  :o
Another bunch of dumdwits that think they are smarter than the system. Great stuff, just keep locking them up :D

And throw the key away too.

What exactly in woman trafficking if its what i think it is Is it done consensually

Do these women have a choice If not why is nothing doen to give them a choice

    Education Jobs etc

Read "The Natashas" by Victor Malarek if you really want to know

EXCUSE ME! I am a falang, or so I am told, I am married to a Thai, the only offence I have ever committed was overstaying a visa by 2 days......

Your comment seems to insinuate that ALL Falangs are commiting crimes in the Kingdom. I resent the insinuation....... It would be like me insinuating (Oh, you are a Thai Male...... You are a drunk!, You don't work but make your wife support you! You have a Mia Noi! and you neglect your children!) Bullshit!

The vast majority of Falangs in the Kingdom obey the law and respect the culture.

Obviously, you are short on respect aren't you!

  7. Loo-krung (children of a farang-Thai couple) are still very popular. There is hardly a popular series on television without one of the actors being halfbreed.

    But what about their parents?

A good friend (foreigner) married to a Thai wife went with her, accompagnied by their three year old daughter to Bangkok to visit a trade-fair. Together they run a firm with more than forty employees (in Northern Thailand).

After a car ride of about 11 hours their story got almost biblical dimensions:

There was no place in the lodge!

First they tried the Pratunan Park Hotel. They were rudely told that there were no vacant rooms and the staff turned their back on them.

The Byoke Sky Hotel gave the same story, but in a more polite way.

The First Hotel offered hope. My friend went in alone, asked for a room with a big bed so that the daughter could sleep inbetween them. They had, no problem at all.

Untill his wife and daughter came in. Also that room was suddenly gone!

This was their welcome to Bangkok. Extremely embarrasing, especially for the Thai wife of my friend. To be refused a room in your own country ...

Standing there, tired after a long journey with a sleeping child on your arm.

Is this a general policy in certain categories of hotels in Bangkok (these hotels charge around 2500 Baht for a room)?

    Limbo  :o

    Very Odd............

My wife and I have been going to Bangkok for years and have NEVER experienced any problems.

We have stayed at everything from the Federal Hotel to the Landmark Hotel and have always been treated well.

  8. Elephants, birds, cable cars to join Chiang Mai safari

It is expected to attract 1.2 million tourists a year or 15 per cent of international tourists travelling to Chiang Mai, and to generate revenue of Bt400 million a year.

The park plans to give tourists two viewing options, tents and tree houses.

    --The Nation 2005-09-26

I am dense I know, but what does the above mean? An additional 1.2 million tourists? And how are 1.2 million people going to fit into tents and tree houses?

You know, until you made this response, I never considered the math......

We are looking at around 3300 tourists/day or based upon a 10 hour period of operation around 330 tourist/hour.

That is a lot of tents or tree's isn't it? Kind of detracts from the experience in my opinion!

    :o

  9. Oh, great... 600 more elephants to suffer at the hands of violent mahouts.

I'm sure there will be plenty of baby elephants too.  Imagine being a baby elephant and spending your entire life being beaten with canes or sticks.  Imagine also not being able to spend your time with your mother, which is what baby elephants get to do in the wild.

I was in Chiang Mai last week and saw a mahout beating a baby elephant.  So I guess (as this was my first time to visit the north) that mahouts throughout Thailand are all into beating defenseless elephants.

    Violent Mahouts! That happens sometimes.......

Violent elephants! That happens some times.......

I remember as a child learning to ride horses at the Royal Bangkok Riding Academy (Mrs. Rhodes) and being issued a whip!

Maybe with an animal as large and thick skinned as an elephant, you need to use something more substancial to get their attention! If you abuse this implement they become violent!

Don't blame all the Thai Mahouts for a single incident!

Go to the Queens Elephant park and see how they are babied...... Look at the laws in Thailand which dictate how an elephant will be treated. We even have a law saying they must wear (Tail) lights after dark......

Now go to Mayanmar/Burma or Laos or India etc. and do the same....... Now go to Africa and see how you can still kill an elephant, not so in Thailand.

Step down from your soap box and open your eyes! The elephants in Thailand have it made in the shade man.......

One incident doesn't warrant the condemnation of the mahouts.

  10. Sorry, forgot to add, my husband just got his (he let the old one expire) and all they needed was his id card, all information was read off the strip on the back. We photocopied everything but they didn't want it, same with photos, they used their own machine.

    :D

Thank you for the information...... I tried going through the internet but nothing as to addresses that I could find (Probably my search croteria). :o

that's the trouble with search engines, you gotta spell correctly :D

    Point taken!

Either I am typing at hyper-speed or it must be that the ###### lettering has disappeared from my keyboard or I just didn't spell check.

  11. Water rise so far has mostly been controlled release although there was also rain in Chiang Dao 3-4 days ago .

Serious sandbagging and dam building going on around the Ping River this morning.

Somebody thinks we are going to get a lot of rain!  :o  :D

Friends in Saraphi etc  moving furniture again, although most people now seem to live permanently on 2nd floor of their house.

Much demand for good massage therapists in those low lying areas - most people seem to have put their back out!  :D

I talked to my wife this morning..... she is getting tired of moving the computers and furniture from the ground floor upstairs and has decided to wait until I return home in October to re-arrange the furniture again.

As to controlled releases...... Are they in fact controlled? A simple CE equation! Minimum capacity of the river in Liters/hr=Capacity of the controlled realease! Once the release exceeds the capacity you have flooding. The reason the minimum value is used is that some areas might have a meandering river (Ss) and they have a larger capacity, but other areas might have a straight river (Less capacity). Technically, Chiangmai is sitting between the extremes. I think someone upstream is using capacities from downstream of Chiangmai to calculate the releases. Consequently we get flooded!

  13. 1. Is there a Northern "Pantip Plaza" or IT Mall in Chiang Mai where you can spoil yourself with large flatscreens, 64-bit CPUs, and the latest gadgets?

    2. What is the broadband Internet coverage like? Can you get ADSL in every part of the town / province?

    3. Which schools do you recommend in CNX?

    4. Is there a German bakery in Chiang Mai? Unlike broadband Internet access, I don't really need this for survival, but regular Apfelstrudel would be nice.  :o

    5. Can you still grow Frangipani (Lan Tom), Jasmine, McArthur Palms and all these tropical garden plants we are used to in the Chiang Mai climate?

    6. What is the most farang-friendly bank in Chiang Mai?

    Cheers, X-Pat

Answers from my point of view:

    1) Panthip Plaza on Night Bazaar Road, just purchased a 19" Flat Screen for around $250.

    2) No idea, but will find out this October when I finally return home on a permanent basis.

    3) I have both my daughters enrolled at NIS. Better than any school in the USA.

    4) No idea!

    5) No idea, I have a tendency to kill plants just my presence.

    6) Personally, I use Bangkok Bank....... NO problems so far (4yrs +)

    Good luck;

  14. I have just resurected and edited this thread and will pin it at the front of Chiang Mai forum. I think it could be an important resource, especially for those who are new to town.

Pleas feel free to ask and/or answer questions here, or add interesting places to go or things to do.

I will try to edit the thread to ensure it remains a useful resource.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Great thread............

I will be constantly coming back for new ideas on thins/places to go and experience.

  15. I am planning to move to Chiangmai with my eleven year old daughter.  I am thinking of homeschooling her along with hiring local tutors.  I understand it would cost US$300-400 for her to attend an international school, which is more than I can afford.  On my last trip to Chiangmai someone suggested I send her to a public Thai school.  Any advice on the available options would be helpful.

Also, is there anything I need to know about visas for children.  I may try to get one year retirement visa, but don't think I can qualify.

Any advice on bringing a child to Chiangmai would be most appreciated.

I have my oldest daughter attending Nakorn Payap International School, which is costing around $3750/yr, not including the one-time fee for registration of around another grand and the $60/month for the school bus. If you think these costs are high, then don't bother looking at the schools in Bangkok or Chonburi which are around 150-200% higher

She is receiving an excellent education from a predominatly Western Staff.

Now, she attended Thai school for 1st grade (She is Thai) but the quality of education wasn't up to Western standards, unless you like using a system of rote repitition.

I would consider your daughter in this decision, most Thai children do not speak English, so friendships will be harder for your daughter. This could end up being a real lonely school year.

  16. Great forum.......

EVERYBODY has a great approach and take on the issue....... some are a little harsh.

QUESTION: The arctile said, something to the effect that she went to his room to get something????????????????????

    Something?

    WHAT is "Something"?

Personally, it sounds like a drug deal gone bad! But none the less, she was raped! Or was she?

I don't know about about Phuket, but in Los Angeles it takes around 5-7 days for a difinnitive result on a semen swab! This might have to do with volume though, or maybe the complexity of the testing required......

One of our contributers, said something to the effect "Wait for the facts!" Great advise.....

The way this forum is heading, I am afraid we will dilafy ALL the Thai males and forget the rest of the story.

My brother is a defense attorney (I hate lawyers), he has defended some of the mosr peutrid people known to man (I have questioned him about this by the way) and it seems that there is normally two sides to every story! One truthfull the other not!

Wait a few weeks, and lets see what happens.......... IF in fact she got raped by these two gentlemen after a finding of fact in a court of law, then lets go for a public castration. :o

  17. Well now,

Coming from Southern California, where we have a continuous lack of water, then nature strikes and we have more water in 1 week than we had had the previous two years combined, I can understand the problem.

Being a "Weatherman isn't the solution"!

Rule 1) Typically, geology dictates that water starts as a sheet flow than channelizes...... for instance, it rains in the mountains, the water is absorbed into the soill until the soil can't/won't accept any more, then the water flows like a sheet on a bed until it hits a channel where it concentrates and moves downstream.

Rule 2) Development (Cities etc.) creates man-made channels which the water uses to just move downstream, sometimes away from the natural channels that nature formed.

Rule 3) If it rains hard, the soil can't absorb the water at the same rate as it is falling so sheet flow happens faster, and flooding occurs because the channels can't evacuate the water fast enough..... (Drought isn't over! The water just went out to sea, doesn't replenish the resevoirs and doesn't replenish the water tables)

Lesson.... Development needs to be controlled, since the consequence of development is the inhibition of nature to replenish its' resources than we need to provide a means to control and hoard the available water. We need to insist on a flood control system that channelizes these floods into resevoirs which should be used in lieu of wells which just draw down the water table (Hydro-consolidation etc.)

Will cost some bucks, but will be worth it in the long run. :o

  18. I love them!

The wife & kids and I go to a particular buffet in Chiangmai right on the corner of the inner cities moat. They have the usual selections of meats (including beef), friendly staff and awesome beer girls. (My wife prefers if I don't drink beer there!)

The cost is 90 baht and like Bangkok absolutely jam packed on the weekends.....

We like it so much, I must admit that we go there at least once a week. :o
