  1. Few days ago I posted a topic with picture attachment:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=75782

But then in the last one two days the picture is missing. When I click the thumbnail, it displays:

Sorry, some required files are missing, if you intended to view a topic, it's possible that it's been moved or deleted. Please go back and try again.

Same error when I access the attachment through My Controls.

I didn't do anything (removing the file). What's the problem? Is it related to the recent maintenance?

  2. The 6630 is about 21,000 baht, I got a 6230 for 13,800 recently but some stores are a bit higher. One annoyance with the 6630 is that it apparently uses a different kind of flash memory - Dual Voltage Reduced Size Multimedia Cards (DVRS-MMC) !!!!!

That's very expensive. Want cheaper & original one?

    6630 for approx 12330 Baht (1 THB = 236 IDR).

Check this out: http://www.globalteleshop.com/ponsel.jsp (Nokia authorized distributor)

  3. You CAN register and login from Thailand.

But you can NOT do anything afterwards (Paypal), unless you have US/UK bank accounts to make deposit to and use Paypal. I've tried and gave up. I thought I could add Paypal deposits by ANY [country] credit card.

The least you can do is to buy something from eBay where the sellers accept non-Paypal payment (money order, etc).

  4. IMHO CD or DVD discs are very sensitive and better to avoid for backup media. It's easy to get scratched and you lost your data. Except if you use them for archives.

Harddisk would be a lot cheaper and last longer (just make sure you don't drop it). Currently I store all my data in external HD with some backups in my laptops. In the future I could just buy newer-better-larger harddisk and transfer all my data, in order to extend my data's life span. In my current external HD, I still have good & working old files from 10+ years ago.

Tapes (DAT) may be the safest and last the longest for archiving (as long as you keep them in dry place to avoid moist/fungus), but the devices are a bit expensive.

  5. No! :o But I think the by the manufacturer advised top value of 40 degr. C. has come down by some failure: I can make some photo's and than a warning. Putting the camera a little while in the fridge :D helps for a while but I don't have a portable fridge. I think that the electronics are getting overheated by some failure.

I bought KM DiMAGE A2 (older brother of A200) about 1.5 years ago in Singapore. I was living in Middle East (Bahrain & UAE to be exact) and take the camera with me to shoot some photos in a hot summer sunny day (45+ degrees Celcius). The camera, especially the battery compartment, was very hot. And after 30-60 minutes in direct sun, the camera stopped working and displayed "ERR" on the LCD. After cooling it down in my car, it came to work normally again. Brought also to dusty deserts, seashores, 3000m asl mountain, etc. But I never had a single problem until now (had taken thousands of photos). Now I know how good this product is. :D

Thanks for the information regarding the Sony service - I'm delighted with my Konica Minolta Maxum D5 - there is nothing wrong with it - but I have been worried about service - does anyone else use the Minolta system?

I do, though not the DSLR. See above.

  6. If you go to Hong Kong to buy stuff, be very much on your guard. HK is frequented by clueless tourists (me included) and therefore the scam industry is at its finest there. If you want a treat, take a walk along the Tsim Tsa Tsui tourist area... scam after scam.

You can get genuine bargains in HK, but only if you do your research very well.

Most of the stores in Nathan Road TST are scammers! They have large selection of products though. Unless you already know what you're looking, how much to pay, warranty, and all the items included in the box, then you may try your luck.

Instead in TST, I found in Sai Yeung Choi Street stores (parallel with Nathan Road and Tung Choi/Ladies Market street) in Mong Kok are a little cheaper. Avoid big chain stores like Fortress, etc. They often sell more expensive.

  7. I heard from someone working at customs department that import tariff on digital camera is only 5% now (considered computer peripheral rather than photographic equipment).

We are hoping so, then the products will be cheaper and cheaper in Thailand, at least more or less the same as "others", no need to go out of the country.

If you want to buy 5D go to Japan. You can buy it for around 100K Baht these days or perhaps less if duty-free. Or can you buy it cheaper in Jakarta?

The price now in Jakarta is about 24 millions Rupiahs with official national warranty, that's more or less around 100K Baht too.

I don't know if it's only Canon DSLRs or most digital products in general, but nowadays ever since USD is dropping, the prices are dropping as well, regardless the product source would be from Japan.

BTW, for information, just got back from Hong Kong on holiday while looking also for PMP. In general the prices are more expensive. For example Cowon A2 30GB (just coming to Thailand I think) sold for HKD3900 (the cheapest, or about $503) where in US it's only $369-379 (seen on the web). Other products such as DSLRs are more or less the same as in Thailand, some are even more expensive. I thought Hong Kong with it's tax free and one of the center of digital products are mostly cheaper. I guess I was wrong.

  8. Without looking at details, I can believe some products/models are cheaper in one country than another. But from previous thread you gave an impression like everything's cheaper in Jakarta, and only provided if you exchange your Baht or whatever for IDR at certain money exchange or some complicated method you described which I really couldn't care less. Well maybe I can give you a black market rate for Thai Baht, then everything's going to look cheaper in Thailand than elsewhere.

I didn't say everything but mostly (at least some digital cameras & gadgets I care of). Surely food and clothings are much cheaper in Thailand.

Some products I gave as the examples are mostly original and have official warranty from local distributor. Black market products are even cheaper and you have the choice. And I don't think it's a complicated method, it's a standard one as you might do when you're going abroad (local -> USD -> local).

I would love to hear the information on where I can get black market products (camera & accessories) in Bangkok. I need to buy some.

  9. Sorry, but I must say I proved it wrong if you saw my last post in that thread with fairer currency rate calculation. About 7500 Baht cheaper over new Canon 20D maybe was not much. But then still... it's cheaper.

I don't believe you proved anything.

Well, don't know what to say more. Probably if someone trusts me enough to let me buy for him/her in Jakarta and I'll return with some change money. Maybe that time it will be believed.

I often ask my friend to buy me stuff from Jakarta (he's going back and forth every two weeks).

My last purchase (less than one month):

    Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW = about 2450 Baht (in fotofile/photothailand = 3200 Baht+)

SanDisk Extreme III 4 GB = about 8750 Baht

Anyone got cheaper than those in Bangkok? I doubt it.

After all, I'm just trying to give some information and numbers, it's up to the buyer to decide.

  10. If one is a an ardent football fan then one doesn't have a problem

Even I'm a football fan and had UBC sat dish since several months. It's not that I don't like English football but I'm getting sick and bored of those all 4-5 sports channels playing old matches over and over again! If only I can switch to better provider...

  11. I also doubt you will do any better in any of the other countries around the SE Asia region.

I challenge your doubt... these Jakarta shops always beat Bangkok's in MOST of cameras and gadgets (same brand same type).

    - ek-gadgets.com

    - tokocamzone.com

But we did the comparison before and it didn't quite seem to me like things were particularly cheaper in Jakarta than in Bangkok.

Sorry, but I must say I proved it wrong if you saw my last post in that thread with fairer currency rate calculation. About 7500 Baht cheaper over new Canon 20D maybe was not much. But then still... it's cheaper.

  13. Because the tour company arranged day trip to fishing park is quite expensive, can we just go by the lake/river shores and go fishing for fun (not for competition or mass catch)? Is license required? If yes, where and how much to apply (in Bangkok)? Any other regulations? Just to make sure that I would not have problems.

  14. Two more tricks I applied on my sites:

    • Add meta tags for page rating (icra.org, rsac.org), use the safest page rating so some page control software (CyberPatrol, NetNanny) may still get the pages. Something like this:
      <meta http-equiv="pics-label" content='(pics-1.1 "http://www.icra.org/ratingsv02.html" l gen true for "http://www.yoursite.com" r (cb 1 lz 1 nz 1 oz 1 vz 1) "http://www.rsac.org/ratingsv01.html" l gen true for "http://www.yoursite.com" r (n 0 s 0 v 0 l 0))' />

    • Don't use an introduction page (flash intro or "Enter the site" link) to go to your main pages. Who knows some bots may not crawl your site deeper than 1 page.

Well, frankly I don't know if they really work, but logically make sense to me, and at least this is what I see in my site statistics (awstats). In the end almost everyday I get new job offers because of my plain-HTML-one-page CV site :o

  15. My friend is looking for Land Rover rent in Bangkok for this Sunday's G4 Challenge. Anyone knows car rent company in Bangkok? I've seen one or two but all are in Chiang Mai/Rai. My friend has tried to contact Thai Land Rover club, but seems no reply from them.

PS: The car will be used only for one day trip in Thailand, not for participating the whole trip around the world.

  16. As far as I know, some Thai bank provides online payment gateway. At least it was what I saw in SCB site. I believe you need legal company and open corporate account with them first. For detail you may contact them.

osCommerce is great application, yet it's totally free. I use it for my online shop, including customizing the shipping/payment modules by myself (no suitable plugins available for my needs). Though I don't offer online payment yet, only by bank transfer manually. So if you have the skills, you may try this one.

  17. One more tips: keep all content in plain HTML or text if possible.

Forget about full graphics description, dynamic content, Java, or Flash. Otherwise those search engine bots will not be able to 'crawl' your site's content. This works for my sites, especially for CV/resume site.

  18. the metal discs are very beautifull like a mirror, but I didn´t found any usage for them yet. For a mirror to small and the screw in the middle.

my friend used the harddisk case (after taking out the metal discs) as an ashtray :o

  19. Trust me... many products are cheaper in Jakarta, Indonesia than in Thailand or Dubai. Comparable to US.

Just like I posted in photography forum for comparison on digital camera prices, the difference can be 10000 Baht. Check out jpckemang.com / ek-gadgets.com / tokocamzone.com

Pirated DVD movie for 15-20 Baht only or 50 US cents, comparing at least 100 Baht in Thailand.

Pirated software/games for 60 Baht only or 1.5 USD, comparing at least 100 Baht in Thailand.

Things that surely cheaper in Thailand are food and clothing :o

  20. I never ever set my camera to auto except at night with flash attached etc... If you are going to use auto, don't use program use AE ( aperture priority) or S ( shutter priority) I would recommend AE as you can set the depth of field you want, then let the camera pick shutter speed, which in sunny Thailand is 95% fast enough.

    :o

Most of the time I use Program mode. I play a bit on ISO setting and fill-in flash depends on the environment. I use Shutter mode mainly for night shots. I rarely use Aperture mode because unless you use 35mm film camera or full frame digital camera (mine is prosumer digital camera), then you may not see the difference on DOF. The only obvious difference on DOF is when I extend my lens to maximum 200mm (equiv) to shoot portrait.
