  1. I am going to say something here although I have been questioned about saying anything about The Duke's and have been threatened to be censored.

I know Dave, the manager of The Duke's personally. I like the restaurant and I posted some positive comments about The Duke's. I was not paid to do so, I was not offered a free drink, I did it because I liked this forum and I wanted to promote a restaurant I liked a lot.

I was told to stop promoting The Duke's.

This is what I got from Dave, it has nothing to do with me:

"P1P came into the restaurant with his kids and my wife, Pin, and I were going somewhere. We did not have the time at that point to fix his problem. He gave us an unavoidable review. It was a problem that we knew we had and we appreciated the critique. But a week later P1P came in with the expressed interested of blasting The DUKE’S. He came in a week later with a few of the Thai Visa people wanting the same review and when he could not get it from them he fell silent. Now, he posts rats. He should be ashamed."

  2. There are many people growing coffee on a semi commercial basis in the north. A lot of the coffee comes from small producers that combine their product and funnel it to one of the major buyers, The Royal Project, Starbucks, Hillkoff, some missionary groups and others. Some coffee is grown in larger plantations and some is grown in the wild in various areas and collected by the hill tribe people. I have seen coffee, aribica in particular, grown everywhere from the high hills to a large plantation that was eventually overgrown with Macadamias north of Chiang Rai to a big bush that is growning in front of the Hillkoff shop in Chotana.

There is a good agriculture library at the CM University off of Suthep Road. There you will find everything to answer all of your questions.

  3. I am not sure but maybe they want to crack down on who is getting the money for Lao Visas? Sounds like they wanted to quiz your agent and where was their cut.

The rule of thumb is, always offer to pay the fine in cash for anything wrong you have ever done. This gets a real time response and not a lot of hardship, confusion and misunderstanding. Another rule of thumb is that everyone, whether Thai, Lao, Vietnamese, Cambodian or Chinese are all by spirit, practise and conviction the real capitalists.

The one thing I love is that everthing is broken down to the baseness of baht and satang.

Do not get troubled, do not worry. Always have a good, honest and decent reply to a harsh word to anyone you deal with. This disarms them and you should always take the wife and kids.

  4. I am sorry to report that all of the crap that everyone has been telling you is a bunch of bull.

First of all, when you apply for a non immagrant visa or whatever it is for your spouse from the Us there are regulated things you need to do. I do not want to hear about the bull you had at the Consulate in Cm. They can do nothing and have never done nothing. It has always been Bangkok and whatever you say or whatever someone tells you is not true.

Check out the Us websites. It is clear and easy to follow the directions.

Do everything they ask in every order.

  5. I love the new Rimping. Although it appears to be pricy it is probably only slightly more expensive than other similar markets. It does, however sell many more imported and therefore expensive items on its shelves.

I think the market is in a great spot and although it might be experiencing a bit of a slow down, after the initial opening, I'm sure that it will rebound.

As for the businesses around the new market, many will go in and out.

As for The Farang Cafe, promote it as much as you can, everywhere you can.

ThaiPauly is a great example of that in his promotion of his restaurant on this site, The Secret Garden.

  6. My most favorite foreign 2 restaurants in Chiang Mai are The Fuji and Zen.

The poll is rating farang (Europen-descendant) restaurant, not foreign restaurants. Farang doesn't mean foreign.

The poll asked if our favorites should be included. Read a little closer.

  7. Don't remember if there is a family forum so popping this here in the first instance. My son is a wonderful, intelligent, thoughtful boy - most of the time - but he has this sort of 'monster' that escapes when he is not getting his way (this is a recent thing) and I am personally finding it very hard to cope with. My husband is not his father so there are issues there about discipline etc. On the whole hubby sits back. But I just wondered if there was anyone out there who have this age group or have had, and can offer advice please. I am so tired saying, "Please don't play with sharp knives", "Please don't climb to the top of that tall tree," be careful on the road with the bike"........

And then other times it's all the "Mum I love you SOOOO much....."

Any offers or laughs welcome, I find that half the day is actually depressing as opposed to being fun. We have a great balance - the other half is fab and we go for ice creams and have a laugh and sing together :D:o:D But I'd rather it was 25% hard - 75% good.

Sounds like your boy is a well adjusted boy. Playing with knives? Climbing trees and riding his bike? Sounds like most well adjusted young boys. Being careful is good. All kids need to be careful.

Try this. Get away from the TV and Video Games.

And just to be on the safe side, all children need to constantly reminded to, "Do the right thing," least they do something else. They also need to know that you know what they are doing.

I have two young children and they are just that, young children that need constant molding and monitoring. Would it be perfect if they were perfect? Sure.

In Holland I have a factory where I have 15 employees that I have to constantly remind to, "Do The Right Thing." None of them are children.

And by the way, it's not a Thai thing, a being in Thailand thing, a bad or good father or a bad or good mother. Trying being in the west where your kid is exposed to sex and drugs with an unhealthy dose of reality.

  8. You are having a laugh or you are the owner...one of the two :o

I did check it out last week with some friends and I have to say it was good .....great burgers, will try something else next time!!

    TP

    Yeah, just having a laugh.

I came to Chiang Mai because of the ladies. There should be a poll.

  9. To be quite honestly with you, I chose Chiang Mai because of The Duke's Restaurant. I went in there a couple of times and the manager made me feel so at home. I have been to many restaurants in Chiang Mai but I have to say , check it out!

  10. I might be from Hungry but I beleive that ther is no such thing as a "Good English Breakfast." There is however a variation of a good American Breakfast. That is a fact. There also might be a good "Aulstralian Breakfast." A good Engish Breakfast? Not possibly that bad.

  11. Are folks from Eastern Europe welcome?

Actually, Eastern Europeans are welcome to join but are not permitted entry into the clubhouse, nor can they be seen in the bar on a Thursday.

British members are entitled to full club access, other zones such as "the cage" and the area behind the chemical sheds are reserved for Eastern Europeans and others of that ilk.

These traditions date back to the old Hillpig-Smythe rules from late in the 19th century and cannot be changed without much ado.

See, this is what I thought. Now, what if I took a shower?

And by the way, how was the fund raiser?

Wake up British Morons. This is suppose to be your club. No wonder it is closing!!

  13. Chiang Mai has changed a lot since 1988. Back then it was a medium size town that had little traffic and lots of charm. There were a few foreign restaurants that all had the international menu that Beirstuba still has. There were a couple of bars. The girls were sweet. There were plenty of good Thai restaurants that you could find and one of the reasons that people came to Chiang Mai was to get out of the hustle of Bangkok.

Now, Chaing Mai is a city. Since 1988 every other foriegner that has fallen for a Thai girl has opened a bar, restaurant or tourist oriented business. Tourism is up, however, but a lot of the charm is gone. Chiang Mai is over run with international restaurants serving bad food. There are at least 3 foriegn beer bar centers, which all do no business. There is a Bangkok like sleaze street and corner where the whores are hard core, although there are some good ones in the mix.

Traffic is out of control and during the hot months you can't breath the air. The Thais meanwhile have made sure to issue as many liquor licenses as is possible and there are close to 1 million Thai bars and restaurants. Everyone now owns a car and there are no Rules of The Road. If you can't afford a car then you ride on one of the more than 3 million motorbikes that cram into every available space on the crowded streets.

But all in all the women are still pretty and things are still fairly reasonable. Good luck finding the Chiang Mai of 1988.

  14. I agree with Ajarn, lets not this thread go the way of The Duke's

Leave it alone and people can just post when they have been there.

I don't see that Mike has unduly suffered much negitivity, things seem to balance out.

UG I beleive you started the thread and have been the one most active on it, so as suggested if you "stay away" from it for a while then it will drop down the pecking order and give Mike a chance to sort things out. It seems that since you told everyone about it that many TV Members have paid a visit (certainly happened on the thread about our Restaurant) so they MUST speak as they find or it would not be "fair and balanced". Folk here are not going to tell lies are they? There Is no hidden agenda from what I can see.

    Cheers

    TP

I don't think this thread resembles The Duke's thread at all. The Duke's wasn't being bashed, P1P was being bashed and he closed the thread down.

I say give Miguel's a chance to iron things out.
