  1. IMHO things like kitchen appliances are good things to bring over - when I did my shipment a few months ago that was the main thing I took -things like espresso machines, premium cookware, etc.

Leave all your applainces at home.

Thailand is 220VAC, 50hertz, your US stuff is 110VAC, 60hertz.

    Transformers are a real pain.

Sorry, I forgot - I am from the UK - anything will just plug in.

I had a friend from Canada who took back a food processor and an espresso machine. He plugged in the food processor and promptly blew it up - unfazed by this he went on the plug in the espresso machine and blew it up too :o

Spicy carrots? Thailand has a ton of carrots and they are cheap. Get a cook book and you can make your own. Also the same for peanut butter. Thailand has a ton of peanuts and you can buy peanut butter made locally and huge bags of peanuts. If you want to you can buy a small commercial peanut butter machine and any time you want to make it you just drop in the peanuts. You can do this with cashews and also sesame seeds if you like.

Thailand now has some pretty decent cookware. If you are planning to open a restaurant or something I would bring stainless pans bought at a second hand shop. Here the new ones are expensive and second hand are not found.

As far as masa goes, how much masa can you ship? Are you planning on selling it? Because anyone who would buy it would want a steady supply. Also no real profit in it. Instead bring a commercial tortilla machine. One for flour and one for corn tortillas.

Make sure you declare everything even if you are coming with a Thai wife and getting an exemption.

Thailand is not like it was in the 70s and 80s. Almost any food product is now available and many other items are easy to get. Ordering over the internet is fast and TNT, DHL, Fed Ex and UPS regularly ship here and get through customs easily.

The only benefit to shipping things here is that the container is cheap to ship into Thailand because there are so many containers going out. Fill up with your personal stuff and anything else you believe is cheaper in the UK but otherwise take a visit and see what things cost and then go back and ship.

  2. FACT of the matter P1P you should be rewarded for your decision.

I know that if I have a problem at The Duke's, that Dave and Pin adress it. I talked to Pin, by telephone, about you, and she said she actually talked to you about the condition of the potatoes. I love it when someone can do something there. Forget the Thai Style, Pin gets my greatest reguard.

  3. Wear a helmet, obey the basic rules of the road and carry a valid license. Otherwise, be prepared to pay a fine here or there. What is so difficult to understand?

If you ran through a red light in the UK or the US it would be a lot of money, an increase in insurance rates and maybe classes.

I see many farangs driving Thai style. If caught, you have the option of going to the station. If you don't like the customs or concider it corruption insist on going to the station.

I concider the whole legal system corrupt, created by a bunch of goons to perpetuate their wallets. Do you think the legal system in the UK or US is fair and justified?

  4. One thing about kids in restaurants is that there should be some control. I would not let my 2 children act up, scream or do anything anti social. Many parents do not remember this or simply refuse to act in their own interest. There are other customers and children should not bother them. This is simple etiquete

  5. I might be singing to the chior but I believe I've had the best food and value for a meal at any restaurant, be it Thai or Farang, at The Duke's.

Everything I've had has not been perfect but overall, and I've said this in my web site, I give The Duke's 2 thumbs up.

My big question is, if The Duke's can sell things at that price, why can't other resaurants do it? If I go to another restaurant I feel as if I'm getting the screws turned. My kid had a small pizza with pepperoni, a cookie and fruit for 95 baht. It was the same pizza that I get all over Chiang Mai for 150 baht.

I love S & P but everytime I go I have to order 2 or 3 dishes for myself and another 2 dishes for my kids. The bill comes out to at least what we spend at The Duke's. I can not just order I dish with 50 grams of meat. If I could I would say that there are cheaper restaurants. But most Thai restaurants do not give good value.

My friends and I, both of them, fully agree.

  6. I don't know if you've been to The Duke's but they probably have the best kid's menu in town. It's on the river near the Rimping and is very family friendly. I have noticed though that the families come early to eat and there are many. After about 7 it's adults.

I go there some times with my daughter and son and they are usually busy eating and don't seem to want to get crazy like they do at other places. I think they have a garden area out back near the wood oven and kitchen and my kids did go out there once.

  7. A lot of Pectin in Chiang Mai. I've seen it many times, the Rimping Supermarkets being one place but I believe I've seen it at Yok Trading as well.

Apples and blueberries are both high inpectin. Frozen blueberries are at Makro.

  8. I think the place to go is The Duke's. Christmas Eve they have a traditional dinner with Roast Turkey and Prime Rib. Christmas Day they have a buffet from 12:00 on.

I have some friends who went there for American Thanksgiving and the reviews were all good.

  9. had a great meal yesterday - again - at Buonissimo on the road to Chiang Rai, with owner Sergio. they also do some italian fare in their little supermarket. pity the place is divided in several stages, outside, downstairs, upsatirs, private room and diners are all over the place. food good though. wine cellar is impressive. had a meal with my wife, one starter, 2 mains and 2 small heineken for 550 baht. good deal. ask for billy, great waiter!

Buonisimo is I think the best all around Italian food next to Giorgios next to piccollo Roma next to Rimping italian place.

I Tried the new Dukes which is the old Tavern Great looking Menu but food didnt quite keep up with the expectation any else try it?

I fully agree the menu sounds mouth watering but the food was disapointing,my "Duke" burger was ok but not as good as "Mikes"and the chips well want can I say they had been cremated.

Too many places in the city to give it a second chance.

I've bean to The Duke's numerous times. More than I can count. I did hear the manager saying they had to change the ground chuck they were getting from NFP and grind the meat themselves. You should try it again. I also believe they specialize in steaks, ribs, seafood and pizza. Maybe give them a try. My buddies and I eat there often and find the food good and a great value.

I too love the burgers at Mike's, late at night and have had a decent burger at The Upper Crust. Still can't beat The Duke's.
