In sheer numbers 75% of my friends that retired here moved back to the USA. Some are thinking of visiting South America, some are considering returning to try Vietnam or PI.

The only friends that remain here are because they have a wife and home here. The single guys all left. The married guys whose spouse had a U.S. Passport are gone. The hardcore guys that used to come whenever they had vacation time are going elsewhere.

The complaints range from the visa system is a pain to just a general feeling that Thailand has changed since they opened the floodgates to the Chinese a few years ago.

I retired here in February. I thought I and my wife who holds a U.S. Passport would live on the beach and relax. But the reality is this place has changed. The infrastructure is overwhelmed by masses of Chinese tourists. Their busses block traffic such that it feels like I'm in Bangkok at times. Their sheer numbers and lack of civility ruin the beach or any destination you take the family to. I came to Thailand because of its slow pace, nice beaches, etc. Sadly this looks more like a province in China than the Thailand I remembered.

Hopefully Hua Hin is better as we are going there next week. I heard Phuket is overrun with Chinese as well?

Hua Hin is still Chinese free on the beaches ...Koh Takiab beach is the best in Thailand at the southern end of the city 10 mins drive from centre with pristine beaches, unpolluted seas.& no as yet Chineses coaachs unlike Cha AM 20 mins drive North where Fri-Mon it is jam packed full of them...so come & enjoy this serene & beautiful city & it's superb beaches....you will find peace here again.

  2. I had the same installed as you about 9 months ago but only after I complaied on a regular basis over a period of 2 yrs did they finally upgrade from copper cable to fibre optic ...hub only 25metres away that they could have done from day 1 ...unbeliveable ! The only reason I got it was a friend moved into a house nr me & he got the new deal package hence I had facts to complain. I had to threaten them with going to Head Office & MD before action though...not a good outfit but have to say since fibre optic installation been fine.

So suggest you call their call centre & complain with passion as my set up was instantaneous [not 4 day bull] they may be able to sort your problem out frm there but may ned a visit from the awful engineers they have in Hua Hin plus go to their office nr BKK Hua Hin hospital & refuse to leave until the job is completed!

Sadly all the outfits in Thaiand are rubbish apalling after sales service & lack of english speaking fully qualified engineers...but this is a 3rd world country so patience ,although difficult at times is needed.

I got that email too.Interestingly, the fight doesn't yet show up in their schedule

also, I checked heaps of websites and calculated that the fight actually starts at 8am Thai time - if they do show it I wonder if it really is live.

update: ok, The Daily Mirror also says 4am UK time = 10am Thai time. seems I got that wrong smile.png

I believe that 10am Thai time is when the main bout is approx due to start but there are 2 fights on the undercard so that might change ......suggest ch 7 on True tv [Thai commentary] as a back up or to check on progress of the 2 earlier fights.Either way Come on Manny ! Should be 1 hell of a fight !

  4. Hot Tuna is or was half way down Walking st i nPataya on left big open air bar with a little alley down the side to arab pipe smokers sit. Always good bands on there in fact got so legless there 1 night listening to the finale of The Wall that I fell backwards off the bar stool banged my head & leapt right up again & continued with my air guitarmuch to the amusement of the band & punters!

Great to see the Saxophone Pub is still alive & kicking...man that place is cool !

Excellent comment & also important information from our resident Wizard !

Uruguay has recently legalised marijuana & there are many more watching to see if it works...the answer is it does ...so why don't the United Nations submit a resolution legalizing drugs on a global basis?! Greed & the Drub Barons is the answer sadly...but heh! wouldn't it be something if it ever happened & who knows if the fast growing countries that are interested join up it may just be unstoppable because all the facts proves it works & the prisons are half emptied as a bouns ......

Your comment was meant as a joke ....right?

    Deadly serious.

  6. 336,000.00 baht is the price a bed ridden friend of mine has been quoted to be repatriated back to UK !

This is with a Thai rescue agency used by UK Embassy & covers nurse flying with patient in business class [nurse returns on economy] as he cannot sit & delivered through to Red cross ambulance at Heathrow.....so be warned having a paralizying stroke is very expensive....

  7. DannyBoy 66 mentioned go to Koh Samat!!!

Do not go there trust me...largest vampire "hen" mosqitos descend in their millions at sundown from the jungle & no spray works you are literally being eaten alive & to make matters worse the sand flies attack your feet ..still got the scars ...added to which the place is a blatent rip off & the people are just out for your money ...wouldn't wish my worst enemy to be shipwrecked there !

Thanks Lone Ranger! Very interested to check out Takiab Beach next month. Do you know of any decent website showing real rental prices for villas and condos there?

Forgot to add if you want the best bangers[sausages] & mash with baked beans & onion gravy the Oasis bar is the place to go on left hand side just before Anantisila Resort turn off on the left ...also all day english full monty breakfast to die for ,pool table also & the Brit owner a lovely Mancunian guy is an ardent Man Utd fan so you get to watch the games with passionate Man U supporters like myself !

If you want a spiritual, calm, serene atmosphere where you can arrive in a foul mood say from the traffic or whatever I can guarantee you that within in 30 mins you are are slowly but irrevocably taken to being transformed to an almost monk like state at one with nature, mankind & indeed your very soul....maybe it's the holy mountain ..you should check out the history of that famous monk who arrived by sea from some distant land & decided this place was holy & began to live there alone ...as the locals got wind of this monk they came to meet him & were so impressed wityh his spirituality they all contributed to build him a teample on that mountain at Takiab....although now long dead .I still feel his presence every time I am priveleged to arrive there ....enjoy !

I lived in Rayong for several years. Work is the only good reason to settle down there. Mae Phim and parts of Samed are nice for short holidays, but expensive and inconvenient to live on. There's also quite a bit of industrial pollution and not much in the way of culture. And perhaps it's just me, but being close to Pattaya is hardly a plus.

Hua Hin, on the other hand, is one of the most cultured, classy, clean, hospitable, safe and pleasant destinations in the entire country. I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about the place (who wasn't a sexpat).

Right on the button Your Thainess !
