  1. I met someone travelling through Thailand who claims they were charged with drunk driving on a falsified reading (drank two small bottles of Chang). I'm not saying I believe his story although I suppose if the reading was taken immediately after drinking 2 bottles in quick succession, it may have registered over the limit.

He also said that he was jailed overnight and had to appear before a judge in a group hearing the following morning. I could understand the police falsifying the reading if they wanted to take a bribe but not if they are going to charge him.

I guess there is not much you could do in this situation if they wanted to get you.

It does not have to be a return ticket. All that is needed is ticket out of Thailand. That could be a one way ticket to any where from any airport here. Many people have used a one way ticket to a nearby country.

So have you ever been asked to prove you have a flight leaving the country?

What are they going to say if you plan to make a land crossing?

  3. For the multi-entry visa they are now asking for 3 copies of your entry and departure ticket for your second entry/departure!

Also asking for 3 copies (including the original) of your bank balance showing sufficient funds.

I've always provided one copy of the latter although I suspect nobody even checks it... As for the air ticket?? That is ridiculous. The whole point of the ME visa is for people who are coming and going on a unplanned basis. I have been flying one way for the last 10 years and have no plan to change that. If someone actually tried to enforce this, I suppose I would have to buy a fully refundable return air ticket just to please them and cancel it once the visa was granted.

  4. I recognise him from the photo. I know him as Chris. Replaced a bunch of amalgam fillings with composite for me and actually persuaded me NOT to replace the ones that were in good condition (you risk a some of the old toxic filling particles going down your throat). I take that as a good sign. One year on and all the fillings are fine.

  5. Wondering if anyone has applied for a visa by post there recently and how long it took.

Last time I applied around September 2015 and it came back in the mail inside 1 week. Before I exclusively used Brisbane (closed until further notice) for double entries and they always did it inside a week. In my experience the service from both consulates has been great.

It's taking longer than usual this time but it's the first time I've applied for the new multi entry visa.

  6. 1) If my visa says "enter before..." can I enter ON the date shown or does it have to be the day before (I have had different answers to this question).

    2) From looking at my old passport stamps it seems that a 60 day visa means 60 days with entry and exit date both counted as one day. Put another way, if there was such thing as a 1 day visa which was issued on say 1 Jan, then the visa would expire at midnight 1 Jan and not 2 Jan as you might expect.

  7. This trip I will be staying in Thailand for about 10 days.

I normally fly to Thailand from Australia with my AU passport. However, if possible I would like to use my EU passport to enter Thailand this time, for 2 reasons; 1) My AU passport is getting pretty full; 2) I already have a double entry visa (which I want to use for an extended stay later this year) in my AU passport which I am concerned some indifferent immigration officer will activate just because he sees it there.

Is the correct procedure to exit Australia on my AU passport and then present my EU passport for visa on arrival? My EU passport is currently blank, so it won't even have an exit stamp from Australia... I'm wondering if that could raise the eyebrows of some immigration officer who's having a bad day and wants to give someone a hard time?

  8. I don't have a problem. I just wondered how such a situation could arise. Is it 'Thainess' in action or is there another explanation?

Recently the Brisbane consulate in Australia closed 'temporarily'. I've always used them because they were fast; usually I got my passport back inside a week. So I took a look at the forms and instructions for Sydney and Canberra.

The forms for all 3 missions ask for different information. On one form they need to know where you are staying in Thailand. On another, they want to know if you have visited Thailand before. In terms of requirements, one mission requires 2 passport photos instead of 1. Another mission requires you send an original bill with your name and address; or if not, your physical driver's licence! I actually rang the Sydney embassy to ask them if they wanted the real licence because if I lost my passport and drivers licence in the one go, I would have a hard time proving who I was! The girl on the line said "A copy is fine but you have to get it notarized by a JP" - a requirement not mentioned on the form..

You would think the embassy would be in charge of distributing official forms to the various consulates and that everything would be unified. Perhaps this is the case but the various consulates didn't always adopt the latest forms when they received them. Go figure.
