As much as I love this country, preventive maintenance is just not in their DNA. One sees it in all manner of construction, road building, beautification projects, you name it. Things start out looking great then aren’t taken care of and decay, sometimes rapidly. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Just what we need, zero ฿ tourists to Chinese hotels, Chinese restaurants, Chinese tour buses etc and the list goes on. Heads out of the sand please.

Oh oh. The proverbial camel’s nose is under the tent. Nothing ever comes good from Xi and his fellow autocrats. I said long ago that the high speed rail was just a faster way for the Chinese communists to get their troops and tanks to Thailand. The wolves are at the door.

We don't need foreign military facilities here - especially American.
By this, I would suppose that you mean you would prefer the Chinese Communists. They’re already knocking at our door, infesting the South China Sea with their island bases, encroaching on Philippine and Viet Nam sovereignty and now in the Gulf of Thailand. What do you think the high speed rail is all about? Take off your blinders, these autocrats are hell bent on taking over SE Asia and they’re not here to have fun and enjoy our hospitality,

The question of it being appropriate or not for a “guest” in a country to comment on politics in that is a specious one. Think about it. People around the world comment on all manner of political questions whether they take place in Turkey, Hungary or Timbuktu. There is absolutely nothing untoward about this as it’s just part of the human condition. Moot point, get over it. Like it or not, what happens in SE Asia has worldwide implications and we are all affected whether one is a citizen or a “guest.”

If the wife catches a taxi by herself I always make it obvious I am taking a photo of the drivers number and license.....it doesn't stop her being murdered, but at least I'll have a clue as to who the murderer might be.
I’m with you, especially if a loved one is in the taxi I always take a pic of the license plate and have the person in the taxi snap a photo of the drivers ID display in the car and send it immediately followed by a call when they are safely at their destination. We do use Grab most of the time but often it’s not possible so we’re stuck with a taxi meter and follow the above procedure.

No law enforcement, plain and simple!

Just what one needs in a free market economy, the government telling people what to pay for goods and services. Anybody out there ever heard of supply and demand?

Unfortunately there is an elephant in the room.... and that elephant is not standing by idly but its s spaffing off into face of the lawmakers who’s laws and regulations go completely unenforced.....
Laws are pointless if they are ignored and unenforced.
That said, the recognition that seatbelts (for the whole vehicle) and child safety seats are required is a good thing... but again, will the police bother to enforce them after the first two weeks of announcements and crackdowns ?
Then of course, that elephant is still in the room knocking one out over all the policy makers.... what about the pickup trucks with people stuffed in the flat bed ????? Motorcyclists without helmets etc etc etc....
Its great that Thailand is bringing in important laws.... but none of this means anything when that huge big fat elephant in the room is being completely ignored.... Thailand needs to address law enforcement on the roads, until then laws are pretty much irrelevant.
Amen. Until they solve the pickup truck and motorcycle problems, this law is pointless.

Bert Got Kinky says I’m an anti-mask nut job. Well Bert, as an airline pilot with plenty of doctor friends, we all know those cotton masks are as useless as teats on a boar hog. With the filters on our aircraft, your chances of catching something are about as close to zero as one can get. Do your homework.

My lovely wife, a highly educated and responsible business executive also has a lead foot. The cameras nail her constantly and our in-box overflows with speeding tickets. Her response when I bug her to pay them is “why bother, none of their data bases are connected so who’s to know?” I suspect that the vast majority of Thais like her just ignore them as there are no consequences.
