  1. Well done to the Thai police for catching two of the suspects.

Plenty of people on TV calling it petty crime not exactly world breaking news....... so what, a crime was committed the suspect has been apprehended its a good result. Its bad enough dealing with petty theft from locals never mind falang.

Lets see the other people involved captured.

    Petty Theft?

    Lived in Thailand 5 years...

    So far;

    (1) had my wallet returned at a cafe.

    (2) had my phone returned at my condo.

    (3) had a driver come all the way back to our condo to return my wife's (rather expensive) glasses.

    (4) had a drive at 2:00 AM correct my mistake and point out that I gave him 2,000 Baht instead of 200 ...

    (5) had a (rather poor) 16 year old run a city block chasing me to return a 50 baht note I dropped getting out my phone.

    (6) had the guy in line behind me remind me I left my ATM card in the slot.

I have never had a friend report any items missing, just more stories like mine.

Now, I live in Bangkok, perhaps it is different where you are? But may I say, that the conventional wisdom is that petty theft is more common in the big cities around the world.

And I am not trolling here ... have you personally been the victim of theft, or any trusted friends .. or are you just sort of ... ummm... guessing? Where and what was lost?

it is the good things like these events that compels me to be one of those "Thai Lovers" who resents negative generalizations .. or Thai bashing. Some times I go over board and am trying to tone it down.

Nor saying that "bashing' is the case here, perhaps your luck has been the opposite from mine.

May I ask, if you have lost things, where do you live and what was stolen?

Wow sorry to say but you seem careless w your things to forget them that much in a span of only five years;p

  2. I've been noticing that Thais are becoming more vocal in getting irritated with "Farangs" even in the smallest ways...something they were afraid of doing...say 10 years back.

Pissing out of the back of a songtaew isn't really that small.

Also the "outrage" is all on Facebook and other social media, which wasn't around 10 years ago.

You must be new in Thailand and has no idea of the norms here and what that foreigner did may be rude but it's not actually a very big thing compared to what other locals do which they call their norms.

And sorry to say that 10 years ago aside from FB there are plenty of other social media networking sites which are popular here in Thailand.

  3. The golden rules for a peaceful existence in Thailand, is to keep the head down, keep a low profile and don`t get involved.

    Unfortunately some never learn.

Agree!I live by this golden rule and for the last 19 years, I never really had any problems w the Thais. As a matter of fact I get along well w them:)

  4. At least this report shows that not all Thais are hypocrites.

There is some sense still left in some of them.

My Thai friends call it as they see or know it.They don't hide the wrong/bad things in Thailand which is why they are my dear friends...so yes there are still some who are not hypocrites;)

  5. Your situation is not easy because you are falling for the person who may not have the same genuine feelings as you. The woman is looking for security, unless you give it to her she would continue making money the best way she knows how.

I wont judge you bec I know what it's like to fall in love hard and learned my lessons from it too.

Remember it's what your heart can take or endure, if you are ready for the consequences then go ahead explore and learn from it.But also remember the reason why you're head is placed above your heart.

  6. Hi All,

I've overstayed by 10 months and I'm leaving to go to Cambodia. I understand that I will definitely have to pay 20,000 baht overstay fine, and under current laws I will probably get banned for 1 year if I turn myself in.

What I'd like to know is if this law is being enforced at all borders, and which one gives me the best chance of not getting banned. I plan to return to start a business here.

    Thanks

Why don't you use the service of Mr.Claudio so his people can assist you at the Laos border.Just make sure your passport is 6 months valid and you have the 20k.The immigration police will interview you for a bit, just be polite and it will be ok.

  7. Have to love Thai "journalists"!!

First a lot about the damage tourism is doing to this particular bay, and then ending the article with information about the best time to visit:

    >>The best time to visit Maya Bay is between November and April during the high season when seas are calm and access to the bay is easy.<<

    Makes sense.......................................coffee1.gif

Lol but hey good or bad publicity is still a publicity;p

They still want to promote it but I guess just don't want that much people...whatever they feel like at that moment;p

  8. I'm NOT a Thailand lover who considers this country as a paradise and its inhabitants as a superior race.

I took taxis millions of times since 25 years in Bangkok.

I had never any argument with any taxi driver. The worst case is when one pretends to do not have change (well, I went to a 7-Eleven).

Once, it happened a driver missed an expressway exit => he took the next U turn => he apologized then asked me the amount corresponding to the distance of the exit he missed.

Stop Taxi Driver Bashing please because this is the direct way to the Farang Bashing.

Well, by the way, about this incident, no report in serious press when it's so easy to find the driver AND the tourists, even if they are back already to Europe.

Same here, almost 20 years and so far (thank heavens) I have not come across those crazy drivers. There were just 3-4 times when the taxi drivers were annoyed for not wanting to take a U-turn which they said was far. I usually just ask them to stop and get another cab as I don't like entertaining negative energy;p

  9. Has anyone considered that this could be the fault of the tourists? Maybe the tourists refused to pay the highway toll, because they thought that the taxi driver was cheating them. Not everyone knows that they are supposed to pay the toll themselves, and not the driver. The story about the driver missing a turn, and not wanting to turn back seems a little far fetched.

It's not really far-fetch given that there are some taxi drivers who do not give a damn at all.And even if they didn't want to pay the toll way like you suggested, there's a toddler w them. The driver could have just add the toll way fee later on, at least if the tourists didn't agree they won't be dealing w it on an express way.

  10. Whilst the council should take responsibility and at least apologize to the parents, the mother should also shoulder a portion of blame for not ensuring her daughter was properly restrained in the car. A seatbelt could possibly have saved her life ?

BTW I did express my condolences to the family on the original thread, so don't bash me about it now...

I wonder of the same question too.The thing is even if the mom is partly to blame, I don't think she will be addressing that to the public. The guilt itself is enough to prolong her pain:(
