  1. I assume we are talking about Nationwide BS in the UK. I have heard that they are charging 2% on withdrawals from a ATM abroad but did not know that you will not be able to use your Nationwide debit card abroad at a ATM. I rely on using my Nationwide BS debit card in Thailand as my pension is paid monthly into my UK bank account . Are you sure l cannot use the debit card which is a visa as well abroad from 1 November 2010. If you have any information please PM me as l have seen nothing on their website

    Many thanks

    nationwide building society

if you have a flexi account card /debit card you can still use abroad,no problems .

your cash withdrawals in thailand , will incurr a new charge .

the cash card , allows you only to withdraw cash to the balance ,

you have in that account , you are not allowed you to be overdrawn .

p.s. IMO. nationwide is the best ,

    fck ,, the banks

  2. i am considering all my options, which is why i posted on this forum, including going to the uk. just wondering where the best places to go in the uk. somebody mentioned Cardiff. is Hull still an option? also, is the application process the same as in Asia i.e pick up the next day?

hull and cardiff , are both good ,

depends which is the best for you .

    get there early and

the visa is issued the same day, in cardiff.

and the lady there , jenny is a gem .

  3. from 1 november 2010 .

    there will be new charges,

non U.K. atm cash withdrawal £1.00 plus commision @ 2 per cent, for each withdrawal.

if you have a nationwide cash card , you cannot use it abroad .

swift and chaps transfer incresing from £20.00 to £25.00..

booh -- baah ... oh my buddah.

  4. A few years back I read that the best place to raise kids in Asia was Singapore. The article quoted the safety, the quality schools, the international atmosphere etc. If I had kids and needed to be in Asia I would consider Singapore at the top of the list as the most important thing would be for me to give the kids the best chance for their future.

if op thinks thailand is expensive ,

then singapore is way over the top.

i would agree , with safety in singapore ,

and you rarely see a police officer ,

    until ,,,

  5. Plan B (to save time) don't go shopping with your wife or, go every other time.

    That should work.

i do as much shopping as possible , solo .

especially , when i am buying clothes for myself ,

cos , the darling allways want something , shoes addict

    p.s. what i really dont like ,

is when she orders more food ,

    than she can ever eat.

    apart from that ,, ok.

  6. Seems to be the norm to just accept things for what they are. I do little [and big] favors all the time and very rarely get a thanks. The Asian way......

it annoys me , thai,s seem reluctant to say, please / thank you , to a farang .

it is expected , that we buy / we pay .

the wallet , just comes out , and give money .

  7. OOPs, I just read a later thread that Nov 7 is the general election in Burma......maybe not a good time to visit??

i think , and hope that burma will change for the better ,

making it a more welcome place for tourists to visit .

another 10 years , it will be as popular as thailand .

  8. yes there are many retired folk living in thailand .

living of their pensions private and goverment ,

along with their hard earned savings / investments .

it is a great life ,, not having to do a lowly job like teaching etc.

to earn a pittance , but there for the grace of ,,,, etc

i think it gives a poor impression , farangs having to work , in LOS..

is the OP , a member of the jealous brigade ??

p.s. i am happy to be a dirty old farang ,,, with money .

    LOL :jap:

  9. Air Asia have some good deals at the moment from BKK to KL and then KL into Stanstead. I have seen them advertising on theie wbsite KL to Stanstead for 110 pounds. Be careful of all the add ons if a lot of luggage

Worth a search on their web site to see what the prices are

air asia is the cheapest for one way travel ,,, fact .

jet airways , started off with cheap flights ,

now they are established , they have hiked the prices.

  10. I would like to see Cuba, but as incredible and ridiculous as it sounds, it's actually a criminal act for Americans to go there. So much for being free, but there would be no banking services available if your money was in a US bank. Many of us are stuck having a US bank because our pensions cannot be automatically deposited into a foreign bank.

problem solved ,, HSBC,, worldwide banking

  11. I guess this is more bad news for the bars and nightclubs in the city.

the bars / ladies dont give a damm

where the farang comes from , only his money is important .

Not sure about that. I have noticed many free spending, drinking Iranians. I reckon many of those who want to party in a town like Pattaya are not among the more fundamentalist pro repressive government Iranians.

correct , when they leave their home country and come to thailand ,

they forget their faith / religion .

on return to their home country , when they seek a muslim lady for marriage ,

she must be a maiden , if she is no her family will------

thats what i call the best of both worlds
