The solution is so easy, but will never, IMO, be adopted.

Go back to 90 days visa exempt arrivals for people from western countries ( that actually spend money on local businesses ), allow back to back stays, and require all beach resorts to set aside some rooms for cheap charley tourists.

That was how the beaches were developed back in the 80s, and loads of bagpackers thronged the country. Concentrating on wealthy visitors and discouraging bagpackers has contributed to the decline of local businesses not in the Chinese orbit.

It won't, IMO, happen, because the authorities don't want western tourist any more, far as I can tell from everything they are doing

My nephew was an example of your pattern. He and some well healed buddies did the back pack routine for several months about 10 or 15 years ago. While there, his big spending parents came to visit him on Koh Samui for an extended stay.

Fair to say, that type of North American tourism is all but gone now.

It’s worse than that, China’s response to Trump’s call for China to investigate Biden was ‘China will

not get involved in US Domestic issues’.

Read: And China expects the US mot to get involved in Chinese ‘domestic’ issues.

Chilling news for HK, Taiwan, nation’s in dispute with China over territory and any other issue China wishes to declare ‘a domestic issue’.

I hope the Chinese weren't eating rice when Trump made that ridiculous request.

What does Thailand offer the tourist? Most people look at reviews befor deciding and booking a holiday and have anticipation at enjoying a break from work in some exotic far away place...reviews on Thailand are very bad stating about ripoffs, dual pricing, violent taxi drivers, corrupt police and officials, dirty beaches, garbage strewn roads, bad service snd language skills etc etc etc..

"Most people look at reviews before deciding and booking a holiday ....... "

Personally, I don't read travel reviews. There are probably many like me. But I do read a lot of mainstream news. Frequently, various references appear relative to The Kingdom, in what I read, that negatively describe Thailand. Example: Only just today this appeared "The 20th and 21st centuries have seen a number of military coups all around the world- like in Thailand, where military coups occur an average of every seven years."  within a Trump impeachment-related article.

Such negative references are commonly seen in mainstream news, and no doubt affect tourism.

  4. As noted one way or another by some posters, this is nothing but a band aid solution.

The answer is to tackle the problem at the grass roots level, locally, in all of Thailand.

Then, since Thailand proclaims to be such a key player in South East Asia, start immediate negotiations with all neighboring countries to curb their filth that is being wind-carried into Thailand.

Get serious, put some teeth into all these measures and for once become the REAL HUB of something meaningful.

Now that would be a big step in returning "happiness to the people" and it would provide a boost to tourism simultaneously.

growing up in canada, having a house with a yard, i made a point evenings of having a pee outside before entering the house.

having a house in central bangkok with a yard, during rainy season, i take every opportunity to do the same.

    nothing better than pissing outdoors.

Hear hear (also Canadian and in total agreement with you).

This may get very interesting if it doesn't get buried.

    I sense something ironic here.

Get well judge and go get them (hopefully, they won't get you first).
