  1. I would think a judge or magistrate would throw out a trivial vindictive case of that nature against a minor .

From what I read , her expression of public opinion about the company is not slander , it is arguable that it is the truth , in a neighbourhood where people are unhappy about the mine .

I believe arsenic is found in conjunction with gold that could poison the local water supply .

What has a company to gain from suing a minor , who cannot be held responsible as an adult ? A Big Fine ? But she has No money .

The bad publicity will far outweigh any compensation .

A judge could make a very big issue out of such a case , find in favour of the accused and make the gold company pay all the costs .

I chose Toscano's post almost at random as an introit to my idea/query.

I do not know much about the judicial system in Thailand as yet, and frankly hope to avoid the necessity of such knowledge. I know even less about the corporate environment.

To business, then. Would there be any point at all to a letter writing campaign to the Company? Is there a Thai based petitioning organization such as Causes? Would a petition circulated via Causes have any impact with the Company?

Thoughts and suggestions sought and appreciated, as in my opinion a minor child should not in any way be a target of Corporate bullying.

  2. here is the thing...if you LOVE this cold weather.....maybe you must go back to farangland!!!!

    !!!!

20 to 30C is ideal, unfortunately where I come from average temp is only 10 to 20C, that's too cold to my liking.

Forecast for my part of Arizona is -9 to -12 tonight. I like not having to hunt out the woolies and piling down duvets on.

  3. hats are a clothing accessory, have been for thousands of years. Like other pieces of clothing a hat usually has cultural signifigance, not only its utility. Several thousands of years ago, some cultures were almost completely naked except for very unwieldly head accessories. In Asia, you can see the hats worn by Chinese, Korean, and Japanese aristorcrats until the last 100 years.

In Thailand, it was fairly common until about 100 years ago for women not to wear any clothing above their waists.

100 years from now, what is worn or not worn, would be interesting to see.

Utility is low on the totem pole as far as why a particular piece of clothing (including hats) is worn.

I was going to say that the decree about western style clothing wasn't until about 1930, then looked at the date now.... it is pretty close to 100 years!

Regarding American men and hats or caps, yes, it is partly a cultural "thing". When I was a kid lots of men still wore hats as opposed to ball caps, and there was an entire set of etiquette rules.

Many are not much observed today, particularly about removing hats at coffee shops or informal style restaurants. In my case there are two reasons; I would not wish to inadvertently blind anyone if there were a sudden strong flash of light nearby, and I have left a small fortune in haberdashery behind in various places because the lack of warmth seems to adversely affect my memory.

  4. I confess to a bit of confusion as to why anyone is calling for a lese' majeste' investigation. At what point did Davies engage in any criticism of His Majesty, King Bhumibol, or any of his family or predecessors? Is the political leadership now also considered Royalty? Even if, I did not perceive any overt criticism of the junta, anyway.

  5. I made one attempt to open an account at a Bangkok Bank branch, accompanied by my Thai gf who has an account with them. We were told I need a letter confirming my residence from my embassy. The embassy charges $50 for that, plus you have to make an appointment, yada yada.
Another branch, on my own, and same story.
I think for fun I will try the Bangkok Bank near Soi 8 Sukhumvit armed with passport, Arizona Driver's license, a copy of my rental agreement, my SS income letter, and my annual income statement letter from BNY Mellon. Would those items meet the requirements as indicated in http://www.bangkokba...accountnew.aspx d'ya think?

  6. Strongly recommend against any sort of spinal manipulation, could have disasterous consequences.

There are better drug regimens than what you were given, involving short term use of a steroid plus a neuroleptic drug. In addition, physical therapy with lumbar traction can give some relief. Most hospitals have PT departments which can provide this on an outpatient basis.

If you are in Bangkok I suggest you see Dr. Wicharn at the BNH Spine center.

I ha a problem like this when I was in prep school, due to a sports injury. Orthopedic guy said "spinal fusion", and I hobbled out as quickly as I could having seen my dad in the aftermath of that. The next guy said "We may go there, but let's try this first...". Series of exercises from the RCAF PT manual, and a home traction gadget for a couple of hours a day.

I can't say it has been perfect for the ensuing 45 years, but pretty darned good, and I know what to do for the odd bout.

  7. http://recipes.history.org/2014/09/beer-for-breakfast/
Beer for breakfast has an European history dating back to medieval times. We know the ancient Egyptians brewed it, and I do not doubt they drank it before noon.
Saying that drinking beer before noon is "bad" is like saying you can't eat pizza for breakfast.
If you are incapacitated early in the day that is not so good.
As with so much else it is not that you do it, but how that matters.

  8. I get very pleasant return smiles from people on a regular basis, and there is no ulterior motive because they are folks I happen to encounter as I walk along... they are not going to get anything else from me than a facial expression of good will. Especially gratifying are the ones who look doubtful or pissed off at first, but break out in a "happy face" when I persist.
My GF has remarked "You do not have to smile at everybody!" I suspect she means the other Thai ladies. smile.png

  9. Anybody had experience of Police General Hospital in Bangkok?
I would like to fine somewhere I do not have to pay too much to buy insulin, and either replace my Tramadol or maybe get a cortisone shot to deal with arthritis.
I would also like to see coverage extended to resident foreigners as I understand it once was. Not as a freebie, but somewhere between the "30 baht scheme" and the generally usurious rates of insurance companies.

  10. Just a couple of opinions here.
I agree that there is a lot of "baiting" in the forum. I really doubt that most of the negatives are from people who are qualified to remark on educational issues, or indeed any matters at all.
I believe there may be some confusion as to what "social pedagogy" is and its relationship to teaching qualification. My understanding is that it has not been much developed in the UK, having more usage on the Continent. In Thailand, unless it has recently changed, the only requirement for teaching English is a bachelor's level degree in any discipline. Certainly in a field dedicated to the theory and practice of holistic child education and upbringing there is plenty of "teacher" material. The OP is doing the right thing, IMO, by asking for advice to fill some of the gaps as a practicum.
I always enjoyed the younger grades, and perhaps because I have a slightly forbidding appearance never had real troubles with discipline.
Middle school was a bit more complex. Knowing and showing a little interest in their interests will engender a certain amount of goodwill. Later afternoon classes can be brought to order by threats of delayed dismissal, if practicable. I know that in the US all I had to do was sit quietly when things became disruptive, and they soon would sort themselves out with whispered admonitions of "Shhhh!" or "Stop it... we will miss "Dark Shadows!", apparently a television show of great popularity.

  11. You have no idea what you're talking about, diabetes is not reversible, certain types of pre-diabetes are potentially reversible, what you may have had is a form of pre-diabetes. Here, read this and learn and stop spouting rubbish and nonsense:

    http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/diabetes/basics/definition/con-20033091

Personal smears and dismissive airy waves don't really support your claim to knowledge. Quite the opposite.

Sorry. The Mayo Clinic ranks alongside Quackwatch in credibility.

To YOUR knowledge 'diabetes is not reversible'. You didn't refute the conventional study I posted, which said that pancreatic function in Type 2 diabetics was restored. If that isn't reversing diabetes please tell me what is? Curious attitude you have since it has been in the diabetes literature since 2011. There are numerous anecdotes that have been posted as to its effectiveness but you keep chewing that thistle, fella.

Gabriel Cousens has a 100% cure rate of pre-diabetes within 14 days and an 88% cure rate for non-insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetes within 21. I would provide more stats and some of my own but your response shows you are a rather closed individual. I find that rather dangerous to your own health and well-being but you clearly don't see it.

That "study", just wrap up this rubbish, studied 11 people, a whopping great 11 people and from that they concluded that diabetes is reversible! Heads up anyone thinking of studying Endocrinology at University of Newcastle, you may need to rethink your career standards perhaps.

Did actually read the study, which is evidently more than you did.

The conclusion by the authors is that a (literally) starvation ration resulted in a TEMPORARY REVERSAL OF a number of the symptoms in NON INSULIN DEPENDENT Type II diabetics.

Anybody hitching their wagon to the snake oil team of Gabriel Cousens and Mercola get what they deserve.

Anybody dismissing The Mayo Clinic and Quack Watch out of hand is not a reliable source IMO.

  12. The original headline is probably nearer the truth than most would care to admit. My wife works in a hospital and the number of patients with diabetes outnumbers all other illnesses by a long way. It is truly an epidemic. However, the numbers of reported deaths from diabetes are very much under-stated because many people die from other complications caused by the diabetes so they don't show the true picture because the doctors don't report the cause of death as diabetes. Very little is done to advise patients to change their eating habits - the doctors (being essentially big-Pharma salesmen) just push as many drugs as possible to make as much money as possible - as they do everywhere in the world. Actually diabetes is totally reversible - Type 2 is easy and Type 1 is harder but still possible - by a combination of eating the right foods and taking herbal supplements - but most people remain ignorant of this natural way to get better and suffer and die needlessly

    Diabetes absolutely is NOT reversible!!

It IS controllable. Weight loss, exercise, and a very healthy diet will keep your glucose levels in an acceptable range. This does NOT mean that the disease has been reversed, cured, or any other bullshit word. The best one can do is CONTROL the disease. Particularly type 1 diabetics are NOT EVER GOING TO BE CURED. They have a pancreas that produces little or no insulin because it is damaged. Short of a transplant or an experimental, as yet, procedure to replace the islets of Langerhans within the pancreas, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes.

I sure wish people would stop promoting bullshit ideas that they have no notion whatsoever what they are speaking about. Unless you have a PhD in endocrinology I suggest you stick to posting about your favourite football team. You are potentially endangering people's lives by spreading misinformation.

I have survived twenty plus years since being diagnosed, and have lost a number of friends and acquaintances to the condition, not to mention those who have had bits amputated, gone blind, etc. I do know a little about it.

For anyone interested in real information on diabetes check out this article:

  13. I could care less which religious beliefs are closest to the truth. Ben Carson is a great man no matter which God he worships and very few politicians admit to being atheists.

I don't know what you are basing his greatness on. I don't know of any great men in modern times, that believe whatever they want to believe even though the FACTS and the SCIENCE clearly show that they are wrong.

The US constitution clearly says that there should be a separation of church and state and this loonie is a classic example of why your fore fathers wrote that into the constitution!!!

The guy is a doctor, a man of science, yet he only sees what he wants to see.

That appears to be something the two of you have in common.

You will be so sad when your GOP loses yet another election because they allow morons like this to represent them.

No way should a buffoon like this be on any stage unless it is a comedy club.

"The US constitution clearly says that there should be a separation of church and state and this loonie is a classic example of why your fore fathers wrote that into the constitution!!!"

I'm forced to call you yet again on this untrue statement of yours. Separation of church and state is nowhere mentioned in the Constitution.

If you can find it, then please post it. If not, please stop making this totally false statement.

Jefferson, Adams, and many of the composers and signers of The Constitution in subsequent writings clearly, and I do mean clearly, state that that is the meaning and the intent of The First Amendment; Jefferson wrote, "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." Are you trying to say that Thomas Jefferson was mistaken in his writing? Jefferson did not know what he was "talking about"?

Or did President Adams and the entirety of the US Senate not know what they were doing when they ratified Art. 11. (Of The Treaty of Tripoli) "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; "

IMO, sir, you are shown to be the one who 'does not know' what he is talking about. SCOTUS has on a number of occasions also concurred.

This was in response to another person partially or wholly ignorant of the content and MEANING of the First Amendment. As stated, The Supreme Court has historically on every occasion supported the Separation Doctrine, although sometimes more stringently than at others.

Until you are seen to be wearing those robes and writing the majority opinion, perhaps you should not be so ready to trumpet your opinions as facts.

  14. .

The US constitution clearly says that there should be a separation of church and state and this loonie is a classic example of why your fore fathers wrote that into the constitution!!!

No it doesn't say that. You and your ilk don't know what you are talking about. gigglem.gif

Yes, it most certainly does say that, Ulysses G., or at least Jefferson, Adams, and many of the composers and signers of The Constitution in subsequent writings clearly, and I do mean clearly, state that that is the meaning and the intent of The First Amendment; Jefferson wrote, "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." 15. A few years back I bought a bag of green Viet coffee beans on Ebay. They were billed as Blue Hills Vietnamese Robusto. This was my first foray into home roasting my own coffee. Loved it! Definitely not for the faint of heart... they do not call it "robusto" for nothing.
Anyway, I will head on up to Trendy Plaza today to check the Coffee Vina folks out. They have a cool and amusing {to me} website.

Amazingly difficult to find any sort of coffee apparatus here in Bkk. I found cone paper filters at Tesco, but no kind of drip funnel maker to go with. I found a place to buy all kinds of intriguing coffee beans, and high end coffee/espresso makers, but not a single grinder. Love those little burr mills the streetside carts have, but I have given up on trying to learn anything about anything until I learn a whole lot more Thai language. rolleyes.gif

  16. I had to double check some of the price comparisons I see people have made. Where, for instance, is anybody able to buy a beer for forty cents? Not in the good old USA, that is for sure. Just checked Lotus on line, and it is 43bt a pop for a single can of Heineken. Chicago the price is $8/six pack. Roughly 10 cents cheaper in BKK. Bananas 39 bt/hand... at Tesco. I usually walk to my local market to buy fruit and veg... much cheaper than Tesco, and way cheaper then in Arizona.
Fuel prices are higher, <shrug>, and auto prices are for sure higher..... mostly because of taxes on the sales.
I am paying $185/month for a 26 square meter studio apartment. Try that in Manhattan. About $100/month for electricity because I run the AC a lot.... I was paying that in New London CT a decade ago. I bought some shorts at a stall last week....169 bt, or $4.89. ... KMart $7.98. And please do not go there about comparable quality as your "western" clothing is probably made in Thailand, Sri Lanka, etc. I will not say that Saville Row or Brooks Bros are not possibly of superior quality, but the average Joe is not shopping there any how.
As is so often the case I suspect people are bashing Thailand on this front, spending time to find the most disadvantageous comparisons. Yeah, some "luxury" condo rentals are way out of my reach; they would be in London or Sydney or San Francisco, too. I just do not understand this. Go home if it is too expensive for ya!

  17. [snip}

... Don't spread your money and income too thin.Remember these famous words: "When Wolf come to door, love fly out window".

I clicked 'Like' on this as it resonated with me. I was having a think about it last night and remembered when I had my first job. After 3 months I got called into the office and my then boss offered me a very substantial pay rise (in percentage terms), from GBP 27.30 per week, to GBP 49.00 per week, LOL ("that was a lot of money in those days").

What he also did was give me a warning. He said "I've learned that financial incentives only seem to last for about 2 weeks, so don't get lazy about it" - or words very similar to that.

I've found that to be true and still believe that was useful advice. Two Thais I've employed (not only Thais - same in my home country too), I've given them more money because I thought they went above and beyond in their efforts, only to find is that the extra cash quickly gets absorbed by things that are suddenly essential (like a loan for a new car), while at the same time getting lax in their job since in their mind they've proven themselves and no longer need to fulfill basic tasks, and therefore become non performing so I've had to "let them go", and then they're in deep financial do do (because they're now living with items paid by unearned future income).

The "treat 'em mean" thing sadly does seem to have some validity. There are exceptions of course, and I know of a couple of Thais who can make money go a long long way (I wonder if it is those that have known hardship, and incidentally they also seem to be much more team focussed, and giving in general, like those videos you can find on youtube with someone gifting a homeless person and they share it around with other homeless people, while men in suits walking by won't even make eye contact).

I've seen it too over here, and back home where a couple have a kid, and when the money runs out, the foreigner is deprived of seeing the kid unless he finds a way to provide money. That is despicable to me, but I've watched it happen. That's when it's the guys own kid. I fear the idea of a relationship where there is an existing child who isn't your own blood, and you learn to love them as your own, then someone pulls a stunt like that. I'm not saying it's always that way, but something to be mindful of.

If you do a simple spreadsheet with known income and expenditure, and see what the delta is between those, and if you're comfortable that the difference will handle any eventualities you can conceive of (Scenario Planning), then you will have a feel for what you're taking on and make a measured decision. Hopefully it would be one that your income is always in advance of your debts, and not like most people with access to loans do.

Exactly what I am trying to do. The income is my only certainty, and if a Republican majority prevails in the next election cycle that is not so certain, either.

Reading the numerous posts in TV I learn that, for instance, "health care is 10% the cost of the United States..." or "it is prohibitive, are there cheaper alternatives?" I see adverts for condo rentals in excess of 20,000 bt/month, and as little as 2,500.

I can get a "meal" from a push cart for 30 bt, or go to a Japanese style place and have a Wyugu, or whatever it is, steak for a month's income.

What is the experience of a few "average" blokes? I know, asking that of a group of folks who have abandoned kith and kin to reside in the exotic Far East is perhaps not well considered, but hey, I am here too. blink.png

  18. Okay in even simpler terms, and ignoring for the moment the dynamics and disappointments in farang/Thai relationships some have evidently experienced, should an income of 100,000 Thai baht per month be sufficient for a couple to live a non hiso life in Bangkok. The governmental income requirement is from the government... I would like to hear from people who actually live "normal" married lives what their experience and opinions are regarding a sufficient income to live comfortably, middle class style, in Bangkok.
    Thanks again

  19. I have been taking 50 mg.Tramadol HCL for several years now, on an "as needed" basis. It works well for me. I have been needing to use it with increasing frequency, as my arthritis simply is not improving, no surprise there. Left hip, right knee, torn rotator in one shoulder, a couple of "bad" discs, peripheral neuropathy, and persistent sternotomy pain. Any one or two could be manageable, but the full orchestra is debilitating and causes insomnia. I also need to know where one can get insulin.... my recent experience of going to Kluaynamthai 2 Hospital and paying 1,600 bt for one vial of type "N" insulin was traumatic. smile.png
Does anybody know of a specific place or places where I can address these needs? Please? I keep reading about a "large pharmacy in town", or "the people's hospital, I don't recall the name but locals will know...". Every pharmacy I go to says "no" to both. Nobody knows what "the people's hospital is". Last trip I was getting by on Ultracet when I could find it and had brought enough insulin for my two month stay. This time I will be here for at least six months, and had no idea insulin would be so hard to come by, so I did not try to secure a six months supply.
    Thank you.
Another member suggested reposting my plea for greater exposure. I am not usually an exhibitionist, but this is pretty important.wai2.gif

  20. I buy tramadol for an elderly neighbor with bad arthritis. No problems at all getting it at large pharmacy in town. They do register my name when I buy it and no doubt if I was getting large quantities there would be an issue, but as she takes it only occasionally quantiites are small.

Some pharmacies don't want the hassle and do not sell for that reason. but legally they can as long as they record the details and a first grade pharmacist was on duty.

If you are talking about "Humulin N" insulin then it is available in Thailand but likely only found at large pharmacies.

Are you staying in the Bang Na area of Bangkok?

Yes, I am living at Udom Suk, near the BTS.

I just do not know yet what qualifies as a "large" or state run pharmacy. As I walk about, with some difficulty but I need the exercise badly, I stop in everywhere I see a "pharmacy". Most of them seem to specialize in cosmetic products.

I can use the BTS fairly well, and of course there are taxis around. If I just had a definite idea where to go I could find my way, with my girlfriend's assistance if needed. She is pretty wonderful, but this is an area completely outside of her experience.

Any information would be gratefully received! Thanks.

  21. Interesting experience at a wat last week...I really need to start a journal so I know which ones we have been to... I was sweating quite a lot, and limp because of a bad hip... anyhow, a monk came up and offered me a small dish of ice cream. My girlfriend said it was "Okay to eat...from monk"....in spite of my "big, big belly". Another, elderly monk came over to chat later. My girlfriend told him I had heart trouble, and he came over and gently ran a fingernail down the front of my shirt with an inquiring look... yes, exactly over the sternectomy scar from my bypass procedure.
Interested, interesting, and compassionate. More than ever I want to learn more about these guys. Thanks for the info about the monk chats.
