I know they are cracking down as usual in Phuket so everybody is a suspect. But everybody knows that the illegal workers are all holding tourist visas. What I can’t understand is why they don’t just start checking for work permits and stop harassing retirees with arbitrary rules that change daily depending on the disposition of the official.

RichardEllis, I fully agree with you!
I finally got my Marriage Visa Extension this Year, but not on the grounds of income (which I could show, with all relevant documents they told me to provide a few days before, when I inquired), but rather on 400000 Bt in the Bank, which was paid in a few days before within Thailand.
They are clueless within their own stupid rules. No one there understands them. So, in order not to lose face, they make up rules as they go. A shame for Thailand.
I hated the foreigner who are stay in this Country and always say something bad to here. Who make dicision to stay, you or thais, Are we begging you to be here? I know that my country have so much difference than your beautiful home country. Think twice! what make you stay here? if thais stay in you country, is it easier?
I agree, but regardless the system is still arbitrary and unreliable.

Maybe the consulates are just as confused about all the "new" regulations, as we are, and that’s why they are giving contradictory information and refuse to take and responsibility whatsoever.

"The bottom line, I think, is that the Thai gov't, by continually raising the bar on the visa requirements, is showing they want the Westerners out."
The problem is that you're not thinking. If the Thai governmentt did not want foreigners here, they could get rid of us a lot easier than the method than they're using. They could cancel all visas. It's as simple as that. End of story. There you go.
I think ALL are intensely aware of how arbitrary the system has become. I personally find the hostile and rude treatment and total lack of information dished out by the Asian consulates to an inexcusable DIS-service not only to the visa applicant but to the locals waiting back home.
Again I find the abrasive treatment appalling, inexcusably unnecessary, counter productive and totally NON-Thai.

It’s hard not to notice how rude the Thai immigration people are particularly in all the Asian countries and all the contradictory information they provide that changes on a daily basis depending on the mood which is always awful.

Anybody happen to know the current conditions for Visa applicants in Vientiane? Thanks,,

Yes you never know when they will force you to spend your money someplace else as Thailand obviously does not want the business.

I was there as well eight years ago and had a totally different experience.
I also didn’t realize until my last visit that they moved the embassy a new location (now near the Japanese Embassy).
But surely there’s a better way to get the message across. I think it’s very unprofessional the way the hold on to you passport for three days like some sort of punishment and then ###### your passport up with this sign stapled to the front. Also what’s the justification for being so flat out rude to people?
After all I didn’t burn down the ######ing embassy I’m just an innocent bystander.

Just got in from Phenom Phen. Just to let you folks know it’s not going to be easy to get your Non-) of tourist VISA from Phenom Phen. Luckily I have my shit together but in my many years in Thailand I’ve never had to go thru anything like that! RUDE BASTARDS! I was able to pull my Non-D off in three full days but was told to go to Malaysia next time and they even applied a special stamp inside and stapled a small cardboard sign to the cover of my passport that reads exactly…
DO NOT APPLY NEW VISA AT PHNOM PENH AGAIN.
Now how’s that for hospitality…;-)
At the time they were NOT issuing any two month tourist visa’s period.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Having the birth papers to prove you are the Father seems to take precedence.

OK, thanks I'll give it a go. Any recomendations where to stay?

Yea pretty straight forward and I've never had trouble getting a six month visa down in Penang (though haven’t tried in a few years) but they told me up front that the max was six months. I picked up one in Brisbane last year and it was a cake walk. Really nice folks working in there too but it's a ten hours flight!
Anybody ever really managed the one year in Penang? If so how many days did they make you wait?
Thanks!

I meant a MULTIPLE and that for a Non-Immigrant visa gives a 12 month validity. You may have problems trying to live here and renew year after year because the Consulate will conclude that you are using the multi's to avoid the prescribed income/savings requirements for an extended support visa.
Thanks Doc. the money is there but they never ask for it in fact all they seem to be only interested in the kids birth papers.
Does anyone have any actual experience or know what the facts are?
Thanks

I think Dr PP means a multiple entry three month visa
Three month?
No I need the one year multiple entry.
So what's the story you've got to fly out of Asian every year or what?
Thanks

Thai kids I presume. Penang and use a visa agent there.
Ok, are you sure about that?
Thanks again.

What are the grounds for a Non-Immigrant visa that you will use ?
two kids, five and twelve.
Thanks

Is it possible to do a one year visa in any Asian countries?
Last time I was in Laos they wouldn't do more then a three month. I had the same experience in Cambodia, Singapore and Malaysia.
I'd like to find something closer then a ten hour flight..
Thanks

No you are only allowed to support the wife (and the wife supports the kids) unless you have legal custody of the child, in which case maybe they would throw you both out.
