What you did was a VIP pass, for Thai residents wanting to shop only in Tachilek.
The OP needs to complete a visa run, meaning exit Thailand, enter Myanmar, then return to Thailand for visa purposes.
As I said in my above post, they do accept $10 occasionally- I just did so successfully.
Has to be flawless, new series, unfolded, no marks, etc.
Not disputing the 500B/$10 USD issue at all.
It is like CM Immigration, doing a 90 day report- it is the luck of the draw what happens on one day, vs. what happens on the next.....

To be absolutely fair, and as a former dealer in the US, I have to say most multinational electronic products do not carry an international warranty. That may have some bearing on the surcharge laid on the OP.
I had a Samsung slider phone, that when I first moved here 7 years ago was a very good model.
Had an experience somewhat similar the OP when I went to the Samsung Service Center to replace the earphone.
They flat out told me they couldn't repair the phone; parts not available, etc.
When I pointed out that the phone was sold worldwide- Japan, EU, UK, US, Africa, Hong Kong, etc.- they told me as it was not a model available in Thailand, repair was out of the question. For a simple earphone! OK, no part in inventory, no can do.
I see anselpixel's point, but for a multinational manufacturer of phones, this seems rather customer unfriendly.
Have had nothing but el cheapo Nokia feature phones since, with no problems.

Like joop said, it ebbs and flows with the years and seasons.
Some years the frogs behind my apt building sound like they are taking over the world.
Next year, hardly a peep.
This year I have multiple pigeon births (eggs, new chicks, etc.) happening in the planter box off my living room on the side of my bldg.
Cheep cheep cheep, chirp chirp chirp, flutter flutter, coo coo coo.
It's called the cycle of life....

As long as they are photos from Chiang Rai, I don't see the harm in posting any kind of photo.
Some like landscapes and scenic views.
Some enjoy images of people and cultural events.
Some prefer shots of nature, flora and fauna.
As long as it is from Chiang Rai, and you took it, and want to post it here....that is fine.

Never been there, but close by is a small cafe that serves Burmese food, mostly Shan style noodles and yellow tofu. If you are heading West on Suthep road from the city, you pass Nimmanhemin Rd. on your right, then the last light before you get to Canal Road, you make a left. This is the road that leads to the Airforce base, and the short cut to the Airport. About 50 meters after you turn left, the cafe is on your right. You'll see a small sign in front with Burmese writing. If you're looking for Hmwe and can't find it, you might walk over to this place instead. Good luck and please post if you end up finding Hmwe.
As this place you are describing is in the immediate vicinity of the resto the OP is looking for, I have a sneaking hunch they are one and the same. The small sois leading off the airforce entrance road heading west run right into Tom Payon market.

Wrong info. The Burmese are not stupid. They want the B 500 and do not accept dollars. Was there just a month or so ago so I know.
The Burmese immigration people are really nice and very friendly, the Thais? The usual suspects. Also, you will need to spend at least an hour or so across the border whilst the Burmese officials do the paperwork (they will keep your passport and give you a 2 week pass). There's a nice coffee shop that also sells food where you can take a nice break and wait; carry straight on from Burmese immigration until you come to a large road/roundabout, turn right, it is about 25 meters from the intersection on the same side of the road. Friendly workers who speak some English and the food is good and cheap (I paid B 30 for a good coffee and a plate of food). Then turn back your pass for your passport and proceed into Thailand.
Sorry to be a party pooper, TheVicar but you are slightly mistaken on two things here.
First is, yes $10 USD works, sometimes. Admittedly not always, but often. It has to be a flawless, pristine new series note, that looks like it just came off the US Mint printing press. This is more a Myanmar bank issue than a Myanmar Immigration issue- banks won't process foreign currencies unless they are near flawless.
I just crossed last month and can assure you they accepted USD from me.
Second, only if you specify "shopping" and ask for a pass, does it take an hour.
If you specify "no shopping", Myanmar Immigration will process you then, and hand you back your passport.
You are then directed back across the bridge to the Thai border; total turnaround time approx. 5 minutes.
Thousands use the "no shopping" option to complete a visa run with minimum fuss and expense.

Posted this just a few days ago on the Chiang Rai forum in answer to the same question.
From gt-rider.com - how to take a Thai registered vehicle into Laos, what border crossings are OK and what documentation is needed:
http://www.gt-rider.com/touring-information-overview/s-e-asian-border-crossings
Don't be put off by the motorcycle vs. automobile aspect- same laws apply as far as I know.

Let's tick it back a notch, folks.
No reason to get worked up about this topic.
How many people on this forum are directly affected by this particular development- maybe a dozen or so?
Newsworthy, yes.
Worthy of flames, and people at each other's thoats- no.
Please mind your manners in discussing this topic, or the thread will be closed, and thank you for your understanding.

Hope your mum is better soon, Iain.

It seems the luck of the draw what day is good, and what time.
Perhaps after the deadline for migrant workers to register expired, they have all been processed, and CM Imm is back to some semblance of normal.
I certainly hope so.

Although traffic fumes (as some put it) might be a factor for discomfort, it seems the burning season has started rather early this year.
See the pinned topic by Tywais on this forum for more details on this:

Give the butcher shop just before the Phucome Hotel headed north on Canal Road a try. (Look for a small outdoor cafe.) They can grind up top or bottom round and it is quite good although not cheap. My only "beef" with them is that they grind it up a bit too fine. It can be quite lean so chopping up a slice or two of bacon and mixing it in works well. Thanks to Junglechef for turning me on to this place.
Yeah, that's Thai-French.
Went in once and wasn't impressed by the sleepy indolent sevice, and the prices seemed high.
But that was ages ago, before NF jacked their prices up almost 100% for prime cuts like rib eye.
Thanks for the reminder T_Dog, will go back to Thai-French and check it out.

Well, the merchants spoke, and their servants quailed.

Yeah, I have to agree NF has gone downhill...
Many moons ago I've been in late afternoon around 5 PM and seen the butchers do the cleaning ritual, bleach solution, scrubbing the floor with bristle brooms, etc.
I haven't seen this in awhile.
I suspect they got a new (lazy) crew in, who are not as diligent.
Still buy the frozen large sized hamburger patties there, as well as NZ Mainland Vintage cheddar cheese, at the best price in town.
And the Danish blue cheese is cheaper there as well.
Sad to see this (formerly) excellent source of quality beef go to <deleted>.....

I dunno...I just read this thread a few minutes ago, and signed up for the new "my Social Security"
They run the verification through Experian, so use your last address in US.
They ask questions to verify- be aware the answer might be "none of the above"
I established a new online acct- took about 5 minutes total
