this can end all discussions:
nobody put a gun to any of your heads to teach English in Thailand.
Tyree D. - you are obviously a complete imbecile to make a statement such as that.
A bit like the 'love it or leave it ' mentality - no one puts a gun at a Macdonalds workers head - they still work there for joke money.
-
You are the perfect example of the "farang" that gives our good PM ammunition when harranging "farangs"
When you say our good PM who/what are you refering to exactly?
-
tefl is just a bullshit job really that pays the meals - nothing more , nothing less - you might be a great teacher , have 3 degrees etc.. but you're still earning less than 5 US per hour in most cases - speaks for itself really.
If you're pulling in 1000B an hour then you are just a rip off merchant.
-
Sounds like you are mostly here to get laid. Are you qualified to get reasonably paid work in your home country? Then do, and come here on holiday for a few months a year, and then go back to work.
If that doesn't work or doesn't suit you, how about getting an education that enables you to do something else than teach English in Thailand?
Or, if it's more a matter of you thinking you don't get paid enough to be bored - study in order to get better qualifications so you can compete for the best paid teaching jobs - then you will get your 1000 baht per hour.
Yes , one of my reasons of being in TL is to get laid - nothing wrong with that - I'd say 90% of the single male Tefl teacher here is doing that . So going back home for 9 months kind of defeats the purpose.
I agree with Ken - qualifications mean shit all in this game - there are people at my job with Masters etc.. and they earn the same crumbs as me.
Basically I'm saying Tefl is a boring as hel_l job most of the time - the Thai students are generally thick as two short planks so that doesn't exactly help.
Go back and get an education you say - go ###### yourself I say!
-
Sorry Chownah - that may be fine for the older generation how about the up-and-coming are you sentencing them to life on the farm? -
Well let's face it mijan , many Tefl teachers ARE helping the young farm girls in a far more rewarding manner than just a few 'conversation' classes - when was the last time you gave 1500B to a Thai girl to help her feed herself for a week ?
You just TAKE money from them with your over-inflated perception of yourself -'The Ajarn'.
Tosser more like.
Oh no , the ticket girl on the 'tourist' boat can't speak English - she's only supposed to sell tickets not pander to white farang like some subservient maid that you seem to think she should.
Taxi and Tuk tuk drivers taking English classes - take your head out of your arse now before it's too late.
-
Simon6973 not that it will concern you but I 2nd the above^^^.You have the distinction of being the 1st TV member I am happy to push the igore button on!!
Oh dear , I'd better go slash my wrists now then.
-
To me learning English is a total waste of time for MOST Thais...except perhaps for the social value and snobbery attached.
I agree with you there- it seeems to be the hi-so thing to do over here - why can't they just embrace their own language and tell us farangs to F off out of here.
Do they secretly wish to be farangs or what?
-
PS. We are all exploiting the need to teach English to the Thais. Why crap on each other?
because it's fun!
-
guess this topic's been done to death elsewhere but , well hey it is Sunday..
any girls out there like Thai men - I guess if I were a woman I'd figure the majority were fairly ugly ,short specimens with little willies?
Is this true -?
not meaning to offend anyone with a Thai boyfriend but most of the Western women I met before coming here seemed to give me that impression.
-
can't say I've ever had any problems like this in Thailand - maybe the OP looks too respectable?
just grow a bit of stubble , undo the top 2 buttons of your shirt and they all think you're some kind of mad deranged farang from the bad side.
-
why did you hand over the 500B - that's a lot of money here.
couldn't you just have told them to 'get ######ed' ?
-
Actually, singing songs, telling jokes etc. IS exactly what teaching a foreign language is all about!!!
I see 3 things:
1: You preach nonesense about how to teach
2: You are just another Tefl teacher that thinks he is saving these people.
3: <Keep it clean please and don't personally attack someone for disagreeing with you please...KK>
-
If you are here for just the ass, why are you overly serious about teaching?
er....like , I'm not......... serious about teaching that is.
surely that's obvious.
I do my job professionally when I'm there and don't just follow a book (in fact I hardly use the book at all) , I also have a bit of a laugh etc.. but I still find it fairly dull. Some classes are ok and some of the kids are pleasant but OVERALL it's just humdrum.
I cannot see any of my adults jumping around and as I've already said, I'm arsed if I'm singing.

mbkudo:
well said ,
is there really any point being in TL doing Tefl if you can't get a good ###### at the same time - no way , it's not exactly top wages here either is it ...
now what I sometimes worry about though is meeting one of my students in a darkened massage room or go go bar - that could be a little awkward .....well I'd probably just by her a lady drink and take it from there......hehehe
-
so Mbkudu , are you Mr Chris's dictionary?
Guess he was either too dumb to think of that one or indeed is a poor speller.
Sounds like a bit of a Nazi too.

Singing songs and role-playing is essential English
that's a good point - I am studying Thai at the moment and can't really string a sentence together but I can sing one or two tunes in Thai.
This comes in quite handy at my local 7/11 - I ask them to change and item and when they don't understand me I just break into song - works a treat . Of course they still don't have a clue what I'm on about but they have a jolly good laugh and just do the refund anyway.....kind of abstract communication.
What songs do you teach by the way - I used to sing in a band a few years back , guess I'm on the right track. Will this help do you think?
-
What is a teacher?
Paid or not as I have done both in the past, your only motivation is one of gift, giving to the learner, not your wages.
What so you need to be gifted to teach English now ?
Give me a break!
Sure some teachers are naturally better than others but the word 'gifted' hardly springs to mind.
'deluded' more like - you that is.
-
Really though mate you shouldn't be here should you?
Shouldn't be where exactly ?
Thailand do you mean -?
Like Thailand is only for sensible people who never drink, smoke or go to Nana - ?
-
I do want them to learn stuff but basically it's up to them at the end of the day - singing songs, telling jokes etc.. isn't exactly teaching now is it.
I have been teaching for a couple of years now but just find it boring doing beginners as they all seem to be. Advanced stuff is stimulating to me but it's not up to me to bring them to that level.
So that is the crux of it really , I just find all this low level stuff tedious and moronic.
-
well not just money,
I'm also motivated by getting laid, pissed and stoned on my days off - no different from anyone else.
Don't tell me you think teachers should be respectable pillars of society now - get real.
-
and yes of course the adults pay for the lessons and I do make an effort with them.
I am still bored rigid 80% of the time though because so few of them can hold a conversation after 10 yrs of school study.
who's fualt is that - well theirs if you ask me.
It's not my fualt they're lazy ######wits is it now.
-
By your temper it seems you are just here to earn cash so you can stay in thailand .
There is no hope for you or your students .
Are you some kind of prophet or something?
No hope for me - what , so you mean being a Tefl teacher in TL is the path to glory.
Of course I teach to earn cash - why else?
Is there something wrong with that?
-
JRincon:
why don't you read my last post - it was immediately before your one if you don't know where to look.
Adults - that would be 18 and over.
Do you seriously expect me to sing?
-
Do more planning or start doing planning - whichever applies. Put some thought into it. If the lesson allows get the kids involved and make fun of them ( in the context of the lesson ) Act a little goofy to get points across- hide under a desk, stand on a chair, and so on for prepositions of place.
If you still dont want to do it, get another job or go home. You are not doing yourself or the kids any favours.
are you off your rocker or something?
Firstly I never said I was teaching kids - they are mainly adults.
Now if you think I'm going to make a fool of myself standing on chairs, barking like a dog etc.. then you are mistaken. Pay me 1000B an hour and then perhaps, yes.
I'm not here to do anyone any favours - just trying to earn some cash as we all are and hopefully teach some knoweledge to those who want it.
Should Us Teachers Enjoy The Lesson Or Be Bored?
