Hi, in Sangkha town you have a big open market and shops around where you get everything. There are some small thai restaurants in town which offer cheap and easy food. But you can also try the restaurants at the main roads for some special food.My favourite good tasting is at the intersection highway 24 to chom chom ( Kap Choeng). And as Dave mentioned,Frank for getting western food and meet farangs. You can find his restaurant on the left side, when you are leaving Sangkha to Surin...and even you change your mind, there is a 7/11 and to other small 24h shops that offer some western food and two thai shops where you can buy things like pasta. But, ultimate, if you are missing western food, as a lot of us are doing sometimes, you can go to Surin. There is a big C, Tesco Lotus, Macro and some farang restaurants like the farangconnection, starbeam...
In Sanghka you have the kasikorn bank with a branch office and 2 ATM.At 7/11 there is 1 ATM,at the nearby shop is one.At the intersection at the big market is one.In
Lamduang you have a bangkokbank branch with ATM at the main road Sangkha- Surin.

They will probably be up and ruining allot sooner than most people would thank. Just and out side guess I'll bet you might even have a few shops selling by this weekend.
I think, meanwhile, they will just move over to the other side of the street where usually all the cars a parking.
I have been there often and you can get a lot of cheap with a good quality clothes but also technical things like a dvd player high priced. And do not forget all the crappy fakes. But they also selling very lovely frogs, a black kind that is living in the soil.

I have lived in a small village 45kms from Korat for over 7 years.
Obviously being yourself is important but that surely applies wherever you live.
I am 60 so I only Wai those older than me and those of a high social standing like the local doctor, teachers etc. If you go around Wai-ing all and sundry they will think you are a nutter
My advice would be....
Smile a lot.
Learn some Thai and say bai nai (where are you going) when you see someone going out and bai nai ma (where have you been) when you see them coming back. This works wonders.
Give to your local temple and school. Help those in dire need and the elderly.
Never loan money in the village, Thais dont understand the word "loan" and you certainly dont want the friction you will cause when you insist on your money back.
Most importantly live in the village for a few months before you build your dream home. Village life is not for everyone.
Chok Dee
You are talking wise

1. Learn the language.
2. Take part in the village social life.
3. Regularly eat at the local noodle shops.
4. Have your own private space.
I agree with you in all points....And do not be arrogant, do never act like you are better than everyone, because you are from a western country. And yes the people will show you a kind of respect even when you try to speak their language.

,no... there is no bodyscanner, just the behavior and the profile, please read the report again .
,yesThe body-scanner wouldn't capture it if swallowed anyway.
But most of these cases are taken using profiling and seeing the behavior of the travelers...
If a body scanner doesn't reveal swallowed drugs, what does it do?

maybe they meant wimax or something similar?
anyway, better they would be quicker with 3G
in Indonesia i have 200 kb/s (that is 1.6 mbit ya) real 3G speed. and several operators have this service too
or unlimited 384kbit for just above 500 baht/mth or 35/day
and it works not only in Jakarta or on Bali
in many major cities and even on Lombok
and of course outside of the 3G coverage i often still get EDGE
Are you describing Germany? In remote areas we are on the same down level.
EDGE nearly covers everything. 3G(384kbit/s) is very comment to bigger towns. And we call it HSDPA, HSUPA (3,6-7,2kbit/s) are only available in cities.
But here in Thailand, TOT offered me high speed (2 Mbytes/s,) for 400 Baht per month in a remote area in Northeast. That is far away better than I can get into a similar situation in Germany.

I had the pleasure of spending a few nights in the Pattaya soi 9 police cells, the police there openly sell yaba to the inmates, and by all accounts drugs are available in all Thai prisons, the drug trade in Thailand is controlled and run by the police in my observation, it wont be going away in a hurry
Yes they sell drugs to addicted people and also try to reinforce inmates to be willingness and after, abusing them for what ever they(police) want.

To be precise even 4G is not a standard yet. Just a draft but not finalized yet. So technically there is no "4G" yet. Some countries have already seen some complains and lawsuits between the operators when they advertise wimax etc as 4G...
4G will have been rolled out elsewhere long before 3G ever becomes mainstream in Thailand...
Things are changing very fast, maybe you are an oracle.
4 G also known as LTE is still on an experience level in some cities in Europe . Ericsson is still testing speed ups to 42 Mbits/s in downloads with unsatisfied results.

Thailand is far away being a civilized country. If you are in jail you have no rights, you are nothing, not even shit. You are on disposal. They torture, beat or/and rape you, and I mean not the inmates. You get forced with drugs you have to take being willingness.
I have an example: A girl get sick and has to spend all her money for a therapy ( Chemo). But she can not pay back all her finances to a bank. The bank brings her to a court and the judge gives her 1 month payback, if not threaten with jail.Does she have any chance? I do not think so.

Yes, there was another thread here yesterday or so showing what the payments were. Something like 300B per person and a decent amount for the truck driver. No way they would get a large crowd if there was no money involved.
It is 500 for the red shirts, my girlfriend told me.

I used to shop at Rama IV Carrefour until we discovered cockroaches in the vegetable section (in the veggies). They were never fresh anyway, but that was too much for me. We shop at Foodland now and it's remarkably better. Very fresh fruits and veggies and excellent choice of meat. Carrefour is still good for small knick knack stuff though, but I certainly wouldn't recommend buying any food there lest it's packaged.
I still remember my first time in 1995 visiting Foodland on Sukhumvit Soi 5 full of bugs but for selling covered on plastic plates.1 year ago I did not see any. When they gave up selling this kind?Do I mention this, you could buy your beer at any time at that time(1995). That was exiting.

In a small village you have no chance for privacy unless you have a castle with a huge wall and a closed gate, yes and perhaps a dog.
My experience is that people almost neighbors or nearby relatives often just want to see how the farang is doing.
What are you cocking, what are you eating/drinking.What is growing in the garden. They are very nosy,so I would too. but I can live with this, because my first floor is a declared non go area.

Is somebody have any news about the fire at Santika Ekkamai tonight soon after midnight?
From BangkokPost
The fire at the Santika Club in Soi Ekamai occurred shortly after the joyous midnight countdown, according to Pol Lt Gen Viboon Bangthamai, deputy metropolitan police commander.
One way in, no way out
Fireworks lit for the New Year celebration probably torched the facility’s curtain near the roof, he said.
TV Channel 7 confirmed that foreigners were
among the dead in the popular club, which consistently attracts a crowd
of Thais and visitors.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 2 a.m. and retrieved most
of the bodies, he said. Fifty-three people were found dead in the club and two
died at hospitals
Deaths apparently came from direct burns from the flames, from smoke inhalation and from injuries during the stampede to escape from the engulfing fire.
Most of the bodies were found in the club's basement. Police said the hi-so club had only one door for entry and exit.
Rescue workers placed the bodies in white shrouds, in rows in the club's parking lot for possible identification and removal.

Hi, I am just back from the Thai -Cambodia border at Kap Choeng/ChomChom.
After my second entry on a tourist visa issued in Berlin, I got the info from an Immigration Officer, that next time I will come back I do not need a visa like a tourist visa any more."You do not have to wait 90 days again, come every 90 days " and said "sure".
I ask him, why do you change all the time the visarules,he replaid, "because a new primeminister"."Samak "I told, "oh you know him", of course I know."What do you think about him?"I just say he is a littlebit to old for reign this country.
For me that means 30 days visa runs again like before without staying 90 days outsight Thailand within 180 days.Same before October 2006.

No problem with flights and airlines.
So there are still problems with airlines?
I by myself got problems with showing my passport without a visa for Thailand last November and was surprised.
I told them you can stay 90 (3x30)days, and my time staying in Thailand is less than 90 days. They told me that we can not issue a ticket due to other airlines are doing the same. After a protest I got my ticket with the advice(from the boss?) to apply for a tourist visa or change the return flight.
My flight: Jordain from Frankfurt- Amman-Bangkok
Are they urged to do so?
