  1. Our burmese maid tells us of reports from her family and friends back in burma that the goverment is already taking action to permanently neutralise the protestors, including monks. Night time visits I understand. She also talks of the government confiscating or literally burning people's cash - I assume to reduce their ability to protest.

Although not directly involved in any of the current protests, she fears very much for her family including her son. But she will not travel back for fear that the goverment will not allow her entry back into Thailand (which is her and her family's main source of income).

  2. Hi, Advice please

Anyone know much about Prasarnmitr Thani Asok area Soi 23. Looked at the possibilty of moving there, was told it was full, apart from one, very nice etc but concerned that it really is'nt as full as informed. Wife went to see it yesterday lunch time, said she saw a few people, great facilities for kids/family but I went today this eve around 6.30 and it was empty, not a soul around. Also have now been told this particular Apt has been vacant for two plus years. I ask my self "WHY" as it really is a great looking place.

Can any one share a light on this matter.

cheers on all helpful ans. And if any one else has recommendations as to where a family of five should move, much apprecaited, contract expires May.

  3. Not a full deterrent but a good idea. My firm is currently working with local authorities to replace with clear bins that sit outside our branches. Many other more proactive measures in place, but every bit helps.

During the 1990's in London when the IRA planted bombs in rubbish bins, the response from the UK govt was to fill them up with concrete. I remember several times walking down Charing Cross road holding on to my used chocolate bar wrappers in search of a place to dump them!

  4. Experienced two such rip-offs over the Xmas period:

    1) Entering Erawan Waterfall at Kanchanaburi where a signpost read 400b for non-Thai and 40b for Thai. My wife and I ended up paying 40b once we both produced our driving licsence, but my mum had to pay 400b (and yes, of course her son picked up the tab!)

    2) Dusit Zoo, can't recall the numbers, but again by producing the driving liscense we got the Thai price.

Have also experienced the same at the Crocodile/Reptile Zoo.

Originating from the UK/Europe, I can't recall seeing this practice anywhere in Europe that I have visited.

I think it stinks as the spread of prices is too wide....if the spread was say 40b and 80b, then I would say mai pen rai and pay - largely based on the assumption that, typically, the average farang would earn more than the average thai, and 100b is still bloody cheap compared to attractions in the UK.

  5. Hi....we need a tutor for our 7 yr old to give a little extra tuition, mainly in maths.....is a good student in an international school, but needs a little confidence building, primarily in maths.

Either evenings after school or at weekends.

    Any advice welcome!

, origin of the boy, i.e. Thai or Half Thai.

Just as a matter of interest, why should that matter?

To determine whether a Thai tutor is better or non-Thai :o

A non-Thai teacher would be more appropriate.

    Thx...

  6. Hi,

I will be taking the family to kanchanaburi (3 adults, 3 kids) in late december for a short break of 2-3 days.

Can anyone recommend a good hotel? - 3 to 4 stars equivalent.....we have so far looked at Royal River Kwai Resort, and Pung-Waan Resort Kwai Noi, on the internet.

    Thx!

  7. Just moved into a great apartment in Sukhumvit Soi 24.....to find ourselves surrounded by building sites.

One particular site seems to work non-stop around the clock.

Are there any building restrictions concerning hours of work, and ways of legally enforcing this....or should I just give up - knowing that the landowner may be well connected and have friends in high places (wow, i feel so cynical after only a few months of being here!)...

    Any advice welcome...

  8. Hi,

Any recommendations for doctors and dentists around Soi 24 area? We are a family of 5......3 kids aged 10, 9 and 6.

Should we expect to go to a family doctors (like a GP in the UK) or are all doctors based in a hospital?

Also, where is the nearest emergency unit?....and is it open 24 hrs?

    Thx!

  9. 1. All TV chefs (starting with Jaimie Oliver, closely followed by Ainsley Harriot and Gary Rhodes).

    2. My kids (for an hour or so to get some peace and quiet)

    3. Grit that gets stuck in your eye as you walk down the street

    4. Grey hair

    5. Dog turds (on pavements)

  10. As a young lad....I have fond memories of:

    1. Bless This House

    2. Citizen Smith

    3. It 'aint Half Hot Mum...tying for 3rd place with On The Buses

Classics. Bring a smile to my face everytime. I can remember the theme tunes clearly.

I can watch reruns over and over again...although I think these 4 are so old, TV bosses have forgotten about them.

  11. There was a fire on the top floor of the Ascott apartment/residences.

I am staying there for the next 6 months. I went back to the hotel at midday as i was feeling crap after some severe food poisoning, and was woken up by the fire alarm.

Had to leg it down 15 flights of stairs to an evacuation point. Firemen arrived and put it out real fast.

The Ascott staff were very well controlled and managed the incident well, but lots of rubber neckers causing the traffic jam.

  12. Anyone here live in Lakeside Villa's?

Have seen a couple of ok properties there and just want to know what it is like living there? is there a good community feeling? Can my kids ride around on bikes ok without being scolded by security guards..... Are the facilities ok (Gym etc)?

    Any advice/views much appreciated.

  13. Yep, we have travelled to BKK many times on business and leisure. So am aware of the sights, smells and sounds.

More interested in what its like for the family in BKK. ie raising kids?

Sounds quite negative from the previous posts. I'm sure there must be positive aspects. We have some friends here who lived with kids in BKK before moving to SG and raved about it.

  14. We will be moving to BKK from SG next year (kids 10, 8, 6), brits living in SG for 3 years. Will be a company move, I work for a Bank, my wife helps out at the school but is mainly a full time mum.

We do love the lifestyle in SG, and I guess BKK is a little more 'gritty', so just wanted to hear from families who have moved to BKK. What are the pros and cons (enough of the traffic already!) and what are the main differences to expect?

    ANY thoughts or observations welcome!

  15. I have a Ducati, purchased in Singapore and would like to bring it to BKK when I move next year. Intend to ride only at weekends rather than commute.

Question is, can I import the bike into Thailand? Will it need to be registered in Thailand after a period of time, and how easy is it to do this?

Also, I would only bring it if I can find an authorised Ducati dealer.

    Any advice?

  16. Myself, wife and 3 kids (10, 8 and 6) will be moving to Bangkok from Singapore in 2006. We are Brits.

And of course we have lots of questions.

The most of important of which is which area do we live in? I will be working in the central business area, I believe the office is on the Skytrain route. The kids will go to an international school, preferably the British curriculum. I dont mind a long travel journey to and from work if I really have to - the kids schooling and proximity is more important. The school is undecided as present.

My company will give a good housing allowance. Will be looking for a 4+ bed house, preferably 5 with pool. Don't mind shared compound but single would be preferred. Driver and car will be supplied as well.

So which areas should I be looking at?....
