  1. hi guys.i have just been to this site -www.hotels.chiangmai-online.com

i want to stay in superior room for 25 nights at suriwongse hotel.

very cheap at 1100 baht (compared to hotel price 1700baht!)

apparantly you need to book by credit card for 1 night in advance

this is fine as i dont want to pay for full stay on-line.

am i right in thinking i can reserve this period by paying for 1 night, online, and then paying the full amount during or at the end of my stay to the actual hotel in baht.

hope you can help.thanks in advance

ps.also i have requested double bed, single occupancy.now it states same price for 2 people sharing room,is there more chance in getting double bed if i book for 2 people? i take it its same price whether 1 or 2 people share a room.thanks

    Hi!

I strongly recommend you to book a serviced apartment instead of a hotel for that length of time.

Example at ViangBua Mansion, with a weekly rate of 5600 baht, you total will be 16800 baht. Instead of 21*1100 = 27500 baht that you will be paying at that hotel. That's nearly the double!

    Viangbua Mansion

Also there are many other serviced apartments, and cheaper but decent hotels.

    Good luck!

  2. Anybody felt the horizontal (forward and backward) shaking before the vertical (up and down)? If not, the epicenter was very close.

However need more data to estimate the epicenter location within 30 Kms radius.

    G

  3. This graph represents an earhtquake signal detected at three different locations. Note the time difference between the arrival of the P and S waves depending on the distance from the epicenter.

    post-24316-1133701756_thumb.jpg

From this one the distance from the epicenter can be calculated, if the time difference between the arrivals of the two waves is known.

    P

  4. For me it was a violent shaking that was over very quick.  I would say it lasted about 1/2 second.  Nothing more.  Does that mean it was directly below me?? :o

If you could not distinguish clearly any time difference between the two movements, i.e. the horizontal first and then the vertical, yes, you were very close to the epicenter.

    G

  5. ...I wasn't in Chiangmai during this earthquake. But the above exercise worked pretty well during my time in Japan, and could roughly estimate the distance from the epicenter, as very close, close, far, and very far, and always was correct!

    G

  6. This is a simple exercise to estimate roughly the distance from the earthquake's epicenter and your position. It might be difficult for people with no previous experience with earthquakes.

Could you estimate the time (in seconds or minutes) elapsed between the initial bang or horizontal movement and the start of the vertical movement of the earth?

The shorter it is the closer you are to the epicenter, and vice versa.

    ----------------------------------

There are two waves generated from an earthquake:

    (1) Faster longitudinal compression P-waves, associated with the horizontal movement of the earth surface.

    (2) Slower transversal S-waves associated with vertical movement of the earth surface (and most destructive).

Because of the difference in velocity between the two waves, by measuring the time span between the arrival of the p-wave, at the initial bang associated with compression, and the start of the vertical movement, associated with the arrival of the S-wave, the distance from the earthquake can be estimated. The closer you are to the epicenter the smaller this time is, and vice versa.

  7. I get an uneasy feeling about this post though. Especially since the poster seems to have been warned before about posting pictures of people.  (Picture of someone he alledged stole from him.)

I removed the picture of the young lady (Perhaps simulataneously with Cdnvic) and will close this topic.  Sorry, but if you're looking for empoyment on behalf of someone then what's with the whole 'almost-hooker' background story.  Is she even in Chiang Mai?

Agree it smells fishy. Would you trust this person if you knew what are the rules that he is referring to? Personally I wouldn't.

  8. Hello G

I tried the number above but it appeared to be a private residence. I assumed it was a 053 prefix maybe that was the problem.

As a general rule I would rather hire someone directly, not through a company.

Finding someone reliable is the hard part.

    Thanks, Gary

    Hello Gary,

Sorry about that. I found their details in this website Thailand Online - Chiang Mai.

    Good luck for your search.

    G

Seems that they have changed their details. This is the company website, where the listed details are:

  9. I think you misread the tongue-in-cheek nature of the other thread. That he would be exploiting her runs opposite to every other thing he says.

    cv

I didn't mean that he will be exploiting her. I meant she will be exploited if she become a "mia noy" or a mistress. For the record, I have pasted below that particular part of his message, and invite the readers to make their own mind about it.

    G

    ...

So, as a consequence: Why not employ one of those girls who would be a "mia noy", minor wife? Even for three days per week?

If you are looking for a real minor wife, to whom you are loyal, I would know woman that are sincere and honest.

For (nearly) the first time in his life, he overthrows his rules, and tells the girl he wanted to help her out. He won't let her get into prostitution. Spends some days with her, talks about all the pros and cons of whatever lifestyle. Gives her enough money so she won't be forced to prostitute herself. She follows him up and decides not to sell her body.

    ...

Please note that the OP has offered this young woman to be a "mia noy" or a mistress in another thread. This is clearly a form of sexual exploitation.

Therefore I am warning people againt the real intentions of this person.

But: I am on the side of the women, and I will advise them against any explotation.

Really I find your offer for a "mia noy" or a mistress not very dignifying to say the least. I am very suprised, as you have mentioned in another thread that you care about the future of this young woman (21 years old) , and that you are against her sexual exploitation.

Therefore I am feeling obliged to warn people about your intentions.

  12. I am moving into a  house near airport plaza and want to hire a maid to help keep it clean.

If anybody knows somebody that does good work and is available 2-3 days per week please let me know.

    Thanks, CMg

Just an idea. If only cleaning is needed, why don't you use profesional cleaning services. Found this one for example:

    Property Chiangmai Services Co., Ltd. , 133 Chiangmai-Hod, A. Muang, Chiangmai, Tel. 202 331

However, I have not used their services before or know their rates.

  13. Winter brings illness in Chiang Mai’s hills

    .

    .

Meanwhile officials in Buri Ram said that some 6,000 migratory birds, some from as far away as Siberia, had already arrived in the Northeastern province to winter at its many reservoirs, where they were expected to stay until February.

    --The Nation 2005-12-03

So what? If it's indirectly referring to Bird Flu shouldn't we expect a little more elaboration?

    G

  14. Nah.

Because nobody has ever accused me of being "wild" or "caustic" in my observations of my own species nor am I like that.

In spite of the multiple smiley faces in your response and your professed ability to "read between the lines" these words, like "professional" are your own, not mine.

I presented, whether you like it or not, observations in 40 years of experience in Thai culture and asked for input and other opinions. That you chose to give criticism and critique is up to you but if it does not reflect appropriately upon my request for the input of my fellow expats, please do not expect me to take you seriously...

    Go figure, eh?

Knew it from the onset. Refer again to post #36.

  15. Hello Ladies!

It's refreshing to have you for once in the chiangmai forum. :D

I agree that generally Thai men have soft verbal and body language manners. That can be seen as feminine from western point of view. However deep down they are one of the proudest people on earth. A proof of this is their high combative spirit during past wars, Thai boxing, and of course the concept of keeping face.

So don't be fooled by their appearances.

    G

    :o

  16. Thai culture does not allow alot of equality, even in marriage. Even new born Thai twins are divided into phii and noong.  Yes, there are a few marriages of equals amongst the more educated, but they are few and far between.  So once under the same roof there is some contesting as to who will be in primary control.

Thai men have a few options here.  Some, a minority of Thai women, will cede the power position to the husband.  Many men beat their wives into being the more submissive partner as domestic violence is pretty endemic.  Other men aren't into physical abuse and retreat into drink figuring the fight is not worth it.  But many men quickly take the more submissive position in the household and become somewhat feminized. Psycho Ologists might ascribe this to the domineering role of Thai women in the upbringing of the children.  I have one friend, a professional business man working for a major Thai corporation, who lives in a home where his wife, a respected Achaan, has decorated the entire home akin to a young girls bedroom.  I have to brace myself each time I cross their threshold.  From the perspective of this unrepentant heterosexual, the guy appears to be rather feminine and he is not the only Thai guy I know in that situation, actually a pretty common outcome.  But I find this a more common response in the city than in the villages.

Me and my fellow brother-inlaws married to the 7 sisters, as well as most of my Thai pals in the villages, retreat into drink as we are incapable of hitting our spouses while our spouses are incapable of accepting the opinion of others. Besides, the traditional Thai villages are still clusters of sisters who rarely fail to unite.  Resistance is futile so please have the child go across the street and buy us another bottle of lao khao.

Interesting post. But can't see really how a man with domestic problems will make him show "feminine" qualities to other people outside his home, if at all. Also the final paragraph, stating that such person will usually resort to drinking, seems to contradict the initial argument.

    Cheers,

    G
