  1. I don't see anything unusual.

Thai kill 2 years old babies with broom, brutally attack people for brushing pass them, or just kill crippled man for fun when drunk.

He will apologize and all will be well again.

Its not just a Thai issue, cases like this happens everywhere even in countries like US and Germany.....but perhaps in Thailand it just happens more frequently

Yes but how many put the wife in a cart and wheel her to the nearest temple to be cremated in places like US and Germany

  2. I've been doing this for 8 years now. Started off working for a Russian company who sent me students. I stated Upper Intermediate and above which was adhered to.

Made $15 US/hour. Had more students than I really wanted as I wouldn't work on weekends and then no more than 4.5 hours a day. Each lesson was 30 minutes only.

After 4 years went private and charged $22 US/hour. This worked fine until the Ruble tanked (from 32 to 60+ per $). By choice I now have only one student.

I received my ESL Cert in 2005 and worked in a school in Mexico for 3 years before working with the my students who mostly come from Russia but also Ukraine, Italy and Israel. I cannot speak other languages except a smattering of Spanish, hence my students needing to be at least Upper Int.

I also did some proof reading charging $5US/page

There is a webpage in Russia (in English) where I saw on-line teachers asking up to $45US/hour but unfortunately I don't have that info any more.

What I did with my students was based on what they wanted to learn. I scanned articles that were of interest to them (e.g. lawyering stuff for lawyers, engineering stuff for engineers, music trends for teens etc).I also used current news articles but tried to keep away from the political stuff.

I didn't hand out certificates as it was only me, myself and I but it sure helped to supplement my income.

  3. I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to put just my browser through a VPN, but nothing else. Firefox can be configured for a proxy, but finding a proxy that will get BBC etc to work is a bit of a problem... unless you have found one? wink.png

Try Anonymix (sp?) from Germany. Get it as an add-on from Firefox. Limited to 500mb a day free or $5.89 US/month. I've been using it for 2 years now.

  4. I have a question for restaurant owners. What is this 10% service charge added to your bill all about. Recently in Hong Kong (but in other places like CM too) I queried my bill and said that I would not leave a tip because of the service charge. The waitress replied that the 10% goes to the owner. In another place in HK the service charge came into effect after 6pm. I thought that a waiter/ress' job description was to give service to their customers'. Isn't that what they are paid for ? Does it also mean that you get better service after 6pm ? Why not just add 10% to the menu prices ? The other question is, can you legally refuse to pay it when the bill arrives ? Intelligent answers would be appreciated. I know I have a choice of not frequenting these establishments but sometime I look at what is on offer and don't read the 7 point small print.

  5. Taking the bus from Chiang Rai to Laos border is OK. Taking a 12 hour (which actually took 15 hours) bus from the nearest Laos border town to Luang Prabang is awful. Leaves at 6pm and arrives in LP 9:30 am. 2nd driver on bus we took was actually a mechanic. We had to stop for up to 45 minutes every 2 hours so that he could fix something under the bus, ( I suspect a radiator hose). Going through mountains on a wet night at 4 am and the back end started sliding. Good job I had brown pants on. Stopped at some place at 6am (first pee break since midnight) and was charged 10c to pee up a wall. Then some locals with their kids got on who where on their way to market with their wares. They sat in the aisles or asked people to move over so that 2 seats became 3 My seat didn't recline at all.......and all this on the more expensive VIP bus. (This was May 2014) My advice...take the plane

  6. Ever thought of Nicaragua ? Proof of $800/month coming in. Very low cost of living. Little crime (cops after graduation are sent back to where they grew up.) Easy to get citizenship.

I came here for a second time. This time to check out for possible retirement. no thanks. (I wouldn't consider CM cheap) Back to Mexico for me. Don't believe what you read about the violence there. Less violent than Good ole U.S. of A

  7. You have the nom de plume of realenglish1, and restrictions, 2 tier, thing, and losing can't be spelled correctly by you? Normally I am tolerant of the illiteracy present on TV; however, this is too much. Realenglish my foot.

Many real Englishmen are illiterate. Richard Branson is dyslexic. (Not that dyslexia is in any way equal to illiteracy.)

    Richard Branson is lysdexic

  8. OK now I am good and confused. I have to get an extension (1st time) at Promenada before Dec 28th I am leaving for HK on Jan 10th and returning 12th as I have to be back before 13th to start my 2nd entry. As well as filling out the extension form do I also need a re-entry with the required photo and paperwork ?

  9. I have a double entry (issued 13 Oct, Arrived 28Oct) I have to get a 30 day extension before 28 Dec, leave TH and return before 13 Jan. Will my experience to get said extension be hours/days or is it simpler than OP's experience ?

BTW was working out how much my visa costs per 6 month....Initial 2 entry visa from Canada 2,000 Bht=.... 2 x 30 day extensions (2 x 1900 Bht) = 5,800 Bht or about 1,000Bht per month. There has to be another way !

Another question...Can you go to either the Airport Imm (I've seen it mentioned on this forum) or Promenada ?

  10. Thanks ....you must have the magicsmile.png One other thing in regard to alcohol sales. If we cannot buy booze between 2 and 5 could we a) buy tickets before 2 pm then hand in tickets when we need the thirst quencher B) take a cooler/eskie and buy before the deadline. If we cannot be served between 2 and 5 can we do "b)". ? Just my 8am 2nd coffee thoughts. (Not awake yet)

  11. That link is dead, so cut and paste. There were about 5 lines saying one team has dropped out and hope you come out but nothing about start times or anything. I went to Chiang Mai City Life but their info was about the 10's in 2013. I am surprised that it is not advertised more, considering it is an "international event" as I'm sure there are more ex-players in Chiang Mai who want to watch some rugby and quaff a few bevvies (without it being on TV)

Looked at Down Under Pub site but it seems they are of the "other" rules.
