  1. Mail to my office address is pretty good for most things - we get a delivery every day. Phone bills are the worst for some reason and they ALWAYS arrive late. Post to my home address might arrive once a week (if we are lucky) and my phone bill for the home phone was one month late.

For sending mail if it is important I have found EMS to be very effective and quick.

  2. I've seen a fair amount of discussion on how to get money in to Thailand, how to buy condos etc. But what are the rules of getting money out of Thailand ? Somone said you need the Tor Dor 3 (sp ?), others that it's easy, just transfer in the bank. So do you need the Tor Dor 3 (Foreign Exhange cert) ? What happens if you've made a profit on your condo or whatever you brought the money in for, how do you get out maybe 2-3 times that you brought in ?

    Thanks, Roland

The TD3 allows you to transfer the same amount out without any problem. Any profit you make on a sale is taxable and provided you pay the tax and can show the tax receipts the balance can be repatriated.

Taking the money out in cash is risky as there is a limit to how much you can take out in Thai Baht and if you are caught at the Airport you will probably lose the lot. Converting large sums to foreign currency at the bank can also attract interest from the Bank.

Do things legitimately and you will not have a problem. Try to avoid paying tax where it is due and you deserve all you get (or rather lose). This may be a national passtime, but it does not make it right.

  3. We were out for over two hours in Lamai this morning.

This is the year 2006 and Samui has been making big money for sevaral years now, yet it is way behind it's brothers and sisters in Thailand, even Koh Samet has got it's act together and regulated it's power to ensure that cuts are absolutely minimal.

Whoever is in charge of Samui should be utterly ashamed of himself.

We were out in Chaweng for a couple of hours this morning as well. So what? This is the first cut we have had since before Christmas. When I came here four years ago we had regular power cuts and often at night when it was really inconvenient. Over the last year (apart from the two periods when they were doing maintenance on the under sea cable) we have had far fewer cuts. There has been a great deal of re-cabling on the island over the last twelve months and things are slowly getting better. Yes there is a lot more to be done but they are getting through it gradually.

  4. well, im thinking of visiting thailand for the 1st time :o

so im wondering if i should take dollars from here? or should i get THB?

It does depend on where you are to some extent, but generally you will get a better rate changing here. If your base currency is not dollars and you change into dollars and then in to Baht you will lose out twice on the exchange rate. ATM's are everywhere and easy to use so why bring lots of cash?

  5. Hi friends,

My girlfriend and I, aged 25, are planning to go to Phuket. We are citizens of PRC China. do we have to apply for visa in advance?

    NO

I believe these answers are all technically correct - however I had a Chinese friend visit me a while back and the Airline would not let her on the plane without a visa. Had nothing to do with Thai regulations, simply an airline policy at the time. Be as well to check with the airline you are flying with as well to be sure. Policies may have changed since then.

  6. Yes, indeed :D

Lovely place, went there to go up Mount Kinabalu...the city is laid-back, tidy, but provides all essential services one could want...

Not much point in me posting a new one as I will be off line very soon.

It's Friday night and boozing time! :D

Someone else have a go! :o
