  1. Try Craigslist, City Life classified, put in an article wanted add. Try Chiang Mai Christian Community, even Tesco has some high end bikes. If you want a used one you can as I stated put in an article wanted add in the above. There is also a site called Baht Sold or something. There is bike store inside the moat on the north side by Chiang Phuak gate that has quite a variety. Be careful of used they are usually being sold because of problems and the owners want almost new price or have when I have purchased used. Me personally I wheel a Tesco 2995 baht on sale special.

Brilliant! This is a big help for me. Exactly the sort of information I was seeking. Thank you

  2. They are cheap just look around a bit more.

OK, Thank you. Can you recommend any shops or specific places to look?

No I can not without knowing what kind and size bike you want and where you have looked and what you found that you considered expensive.

    Hi. I'm looking for a road/hybrid style bike. I am 5ft 10.

Can I post a Facebook link on here? I consider this fairly priced: https://www.facebook.com/groups/chiangmaiusedbikesforsale/permalink/875758199198265/

What I think is expensive is something similar, for twice the price.

Oh sorry. I forgot it was a closed or private group.

    This is the bike: http://www.riteway-jp.com/bicycle/riteway/2013/9732514.html

Here is some information he posted about it.

"This is a Japanese-made 2012 Iron Shepherd. It's a 51 cm steel framed casual road/city bike. The bike has all Shimano components. It goes for about 70,000 Yen or 20,000 THB new, before import fees.

The brand, Riteway is the same company that makes Felt and Charge cycles, though this brand is generally only sold in Japan.

It's a well-designed bike. It's has dual front and rear eyelets so one could attach both front and rear cargo racks and front and rear fenders. This makes it appropriate for short touring and a great commuter bike.

The are two braze on points to attach bottle cages. I've installed some Merida ergo grips in place of the original grips along with small horns to assist in hill climbing.

The bike frame is made from 4130 Cro-Moly steel. It's a strong bike and feels nice when you ride it. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/41xx_steel)

There are two chain rings in the front and 8 disks in the back. I've ridden the Samoeng Loop before with this bike and gone to the top of Doi Suthep. In all honesty though, it's not great for hills due to the gearing. It is a great bike for getting around town and moving between traffic. I rode it safely for a year in BKK. It's quick and responsive.

I'm about 175 cm and it just fit me, though it was on the small size. The 51 cm frame is normally recommended for riders from 165-180 cm. (That's about 5' 5" up to 5' 11")"

It is being sold for 6000 baht. For what it is, that is a fair price. Equal to what I would pay for something similar in England.

  3. I live in a condo building where we pay the government rate for electricity. Each unit has its own meter and I've seen this at many other condo buildings.

We can pay a modest monthly fee and use the building's slow wifi internet or arrange for our own service and the building staff will help run new wiring, if needed.

Same with TV. I think the building offers some sort of cable TV that has a couple English channels, but everyone I know either has WETV or True. No problem with True putting a dish up on the roof for you. For a time many people had pirated-operated dishes on the condo roof, but I don't know if they're still allowing that.

Building has two elevators and if one breaks it's never out of service for very long. Pool is kept very clean.

These are all things you can check out before you move in.

Not all condos have overpriced electricity, broken elevators, dishonest managers, etc, etc.

May I ask where you are renting a place? I am trying to look for somewhere now.

Many are like this. Nakorn Ping Condo, Hillside Condo 4, Srithana Condo 2 (no pool). Riverside Condo. I suspect Rim Ping Condo and Floral Condo also have gov't rates for electricity and permit you to bring in the internet of your choice, but I don't know for sure. I do know for sure about the others because I have friends who live in those buildings. The others I mentioned have everything I said in the previous post, including a pool (except for Srithana 2)

The twenty year old condo buildings in this town are gems, in my opinion. They're well-located and they've been around long enough that the developers and original owners are long since out of the picture. They've been thru the upheavals that so often plague newer condo buildings as they go thru their "governance" issues. Either they have good juristic boards and management in place or they've become dumps like CityView Tower condo due to bad governance. Units have changed hands a few times and many have been nicely updated and available for rent at a good price. You can walk into the building and simply by looking at how the pool is maintained and what type of commercial activity there is on the ground floor, you can often determine if the building is a "keeper".

The new condo buildings all look gorgeous because they're new. Many won't age gracefully, especially if there isn't a good building committee in place. The management can explain the lack of a laundry service, restaurant, convenience store on the ground floor by saying "coming soon".

Thank you! This is very useful to me.

  5. Football Shirt + shorts, around 300bht at MaeJo Student Market Monday evenings.

On the old 1001 outside the MaeJo University side entrance.

Lazada do a good range as well, cycling shorts and top starting from 700bht, 3 weeks delivery from China.

Sportswear shop, just around the corner from the Moat Park, Sports shirts from 100bht.

But they don't like selling to foreigners. You need to be really pushy to buy from them.

Don't like selling to foreigners? I don't get that at all.

    Thank you for the information!

  6. Try the export clothing shops. Depends on how fancy you need the clothing to be. You can exercise in a tee shirt and comfortable pair of stretchy shorts, both can be found at the export clothing shops in larger sizes. Now, if you want something in a fancy microfiber to wick perspiration -- well, you're going to have to pay for that.

I am prepared to pay for the right items, I just don't want to pay over the odds when I don't need to.

Export clothing stores? This is a new concept to me, I shall seek them out. Thank you.

  7. Great questions. I have been here 10 years and am still wondering the same thing, where to find shorts and t-shirts. I looked all over the night bazar for two nights.

I'm going to go on a mission and see what I can find, I'll let you know the results.

My issue with the branded stores isn't the price, it's the same as in the UK, for the most part - Under Armour is more expensive than in the UK, for example - it's that stores won't have the same selection of things on sale. That's from my brief experience with these kind of shops. I am happy to be proven wrong.

  9. I pay 9000 Baht for a house downtown that's walking distance to the bars, the big city markets, etc.

Never measured it but it's probably 120 sq. meters, not counting the parking out front and patio at the back.

Condominiums are overrated. And in the wrong place, by and large.

May I ask how one would go about renting somewhere like this? I am currently looking for somewhere to live in the city.

  10. The Adidas/Nike etc stores are all very expensive. Can someone recommend somewhere I can buy shorts, t-shirts and stuff for training in? Footwear I will still buy branded as I know what I need and it's important to buy a very good product to protect my feet. Not as important for the rest of my body. Any recommendations of places to shop?

  11. Hi Mike,

Try a lady hairdresser close to Thae Pae Gate. we have been using her for years do you know Chiang Mai? If not then without knowing where you are staying I will try to direct you there.

She is located by the moat (Cannot remember her name) Find Montri Hotel opposite main Thae Pae Gate, Black Canyon Coffe on the opposite Corner. Walk South passing Top North Hotel continue on until the sidewalk recesses by a coffee & cake shop on 30 feet she is on the right there if you find the Corner Restaurant you have gone too far. Price 120 baht around $4.00 & for us she is good been going there for 10 years.. Probably called Hair & Beauty I am not sure only a small salon.

Is she still there? I'm in desperate need of a hair cut right now

  12. There is a sports club in Chiang Mai called Bronco Kids. They have a rhythmic gymnastics program there, and I'm pretty sure they have private training. It's run by Kru Oor, you can find them on google and just go by to discuss, they might have want you want or could steer you in the right direction.

    Bronco Kids

    Kru Oor Gymnastics

Thank you! Doesn't really look what I require but I shall definitely contact them as I am sure they can help me find what I need. Thank you

  13. I have searched but the posts seem quite old, thought a new post on the subject would be appropriate.

Looking for an adult open gymnastics class with tuition / spotters available.

I have done some research and it looks like Chiang Mai has more options than Bangkok.

700 Year Stadium? Does that provide gymnastics facilities? There was another place but I can't find it or remember the name right now.

    Thank you, all. x
