  1. I’m an engineer and wouldn’t mind in transferring the knowledge at my age. However I think 5 yrs is too long, I probably do it for either 3 yrs or 20 hrs per month if it is for 5 yrs.

    And also I neither drink nor have the money enough for any construction business.

    As for learning the language and culture, they are for my own good anyway - if I plan to be living in thailand on somewhat permanently basis

    So it’s a toss between YES and May BE vote, but I’m leaning toward “MAY BE”

  2. Doesn't matter…

    If I don't like her. It will be because of her personality, not her race or class or nationality

    Has there never been a certain race, class or nationality youve prefered over another, im no human analsyst but i believe your race, class and nationality are the 3 of the most important aspects to determine your personality.

    As there has been so many books written on race, class and nationality then they must in the human imagination exist.

    I’m an American, my wife is a thai – and have been together for over 2 decades so far, but we have no problems because of our race. Just learn how to make fun of each other culture. Take everything easy. Love doesn't know race, and class, at least for me anyway. Our marriage is based on friendship, mutual love & respect, and gives & takes – not race. She has been contributing as much as I have in our marriage…both emontionally and financially.

    You just can’t pick and choose when and where or with whom you will get hit with the cupid arrows. Race and class only matter to bigots and racists.

  3. You may be able to forgive her for lying, but you will never be able to forget. And it will be in the back of your mind everyday of your relationship, especially if she ever does anything that seems suspicious, your mind will go back to the first lie. And it will not matter whether or not at the moment she is telling you the truth, because you know she used to be a liar and simply is not worthy of your total trust anymore.

    Most often when a person lies once and gets caught, the next time she will lie harder not to get caught.

    SO WATCH OUT!

  4. There are always going to be people who do things you aren't going to like in just about any situation. Technology is never just a GOOD thing, it can be used either way. When you post in an open forum like this, you invite virtually anyone in with something to say, we're all going to hear things that we wish we hadn't. Freedom of Speech,... is also a double-edged sword.

    But it too can bring out the best in people, humor and a funny side....which I also see it here often

  5. I don’t believe most single guys come here for thai women only. Only some, I would call them, ……

    first - the “macho” type who has the mentality of “find them, feed them, and then f*** them, and the second - men who have very specific `racialised'-sexual fantasies. They come here in order to find cheap, easy sexual access for all their fantasy needs.

    With just about $20-30 a night, after all while back in the farangland, these men could not even buy a nice dinner- for- two for this sum, and of course far less obtain the services of a maid/prostitute. But while in Thailand, even with his bloated/ or well weathered face/body and receding hair lines, can have a beautiful 20s some years old in his arms and in his own words, ´like a model'. While believing that she must also find him sexually attractive (hansum man) to be offering so much for so little in return. What a laugh!

    But seriously for what I’ve seen so far, other than those 2 types mentioned above, there are many many men that do not come here specifically for the thai women only, but many do enter into sexually exploitative relationships with local women as soon as the opportunity presents itself and to the point of marriage in many cases.

    Also the case of the comment “bunch of jelly assed old cellulite hags back in the west”

    Well I also have seen many beautiful body women here in thailand who become very ugly as soon as they open their mouth. I believe that, your personality also reflects also your intelligence. So I would rather prefer to be with a so-so looking women with a bit of good personality along with some brain any day.

  6. There is no exact best age to retire. It greatly depends on the individual . Everyone has different goals and needs. The best age to retire is when you think your life will be more meaningful elsewhere, or by doing something else, and of course with the means to do it …..whether be financially, physically, or mentally.

    What is the meaning of “retirement” anyway. It has diff meaning to each one of us. For me “retirement” means I now can be sitting somewhere watching the sunset, eating pork leg over rice, while writing my 3 engineering books that I have started couple yrs ago and never have found the time to finish them. As for fulfilling the emotional and spiritual side, I+my wife(thai) are planning to either fostering or adopting couple thai kids, once we “retired”, hence giving them the opportunity for better future and knowing that, yes my excess hard-earned money can indeed bring the happiness of diff kind and at the same time is making someone else life better. Those are the meaning of life and retirement for me.

    Let’s see I’m now 43, so next year or the year after next will be just perfect for me…..right now too many obligations here to fulfill first.

  7. Well I’ve been married for 20 years with my thai wife…and absolutely love marriage and my wife – 1st marriage for both of us.

    We’re similar in age (2 yr diff), and education. But the time has not always been easy, esp during our univ years( almost bloke all the times). We have had our usual ups and downs, it takes a lot of trial and error but I think the key to OUR happy marriage are....mutual love, a lot of respect, and understanding possible w/ open communication.

    I think the only time two people never have a disagreement is when they are both dead.

  8. OK...the below is from one of the thai law firms

    -What are the characteristics of the right of superficies?

    1. Creation of a separate right of ownership of the building(s) built on the land. Basically, the right of superficies is the right of a tenant to own the construction he built on upon a land;

    2. The right of superficies is transmissible to the heirs;

    3. The right of superficies is not terminated by the destruction of the buildings, even by force majeure;

    4. The right of superficies is granted for a period of 30 years and can be renewed per period of 30 years at a time;

    5. The right of superficies must be made in written and is registered at the Land Department. A mention of its registration is inserted on the back of the original land title deed kept at the Land Department as well as on the back of the land title deed kept by the land owner;

    6. The right of superficies can be terminated only “If the superficiary fails to comply with any essential condition specified in the act creating the superficies or, when rent is to be paid, he fails to pay it for two consecutive years”;

    -What is the difference between the right of superficies and the lease agreement?

    A lease agreement is a contract by which “…a person called the letter agrees to let another person, have the use of a property for a limited period of time and the letter agrees to pay a rent therefore”.

    -What are the main features of a lease agreement?

    A lease agreement can be drafted in such way to grant the same features as the right of superficies.

    The right of superficies or the lease agreement can be used to achieve the same results. The main difference however is that most of the interesting features of the right of superficies are expressly stipulated by the law e.g. the law stipulates the creation of a separate right of ownership of a building in the case of the right of superficies. It also stipulates the transmissibility to the heirs. In other words the beneficiary of a right of superficies will own the house he built on the land even if it is not specified in the superficies Agreement. His heirs will be entitled to inherit his house even it is not written in the contract.

  9. I’m not that fussy and will be happy wherever we happen to be in - as long as we are together, whether here in the US or LOS. But since my thai wife is in no hurry to go back, so the US it is – for now.

  10. ...... And why does she want to marry in March and come here because thats a little bit more serious than just giving her money and is she really going to come here and not be happy because there is no money?......

    On negative side

    1-You’re her obvious free pass to England and British Passport. I have heard some girls will dump their farang husband after that.

    2-Or if she hasn’t found any rich farang in Thailand by now, she might think why not go to the source. There is higher probability for her in finding one in England…. even richer and younger?

    3-About her wanting to study and work part time in England. Right! Well I know a few in the US who have been selling their muff during the study breaks.

    Well I can go on and on. But If I’m wrong about her then good for you!... cause you just have found one of those diamonds in the rough.

    Obviously you're head over heels with her, I don't think anyone of us can make you see any sense. Because seems to me you're already made up your mind about her and just looking for validations on your points of view

  11. Ok I will do this duplicate reply again, which I just posted in the news clipping forum

    For List #3

    All I can find is this - from today Jan-10 - news from “Thairath News” thai newspaper

    Translations....

    Retailing-Wholesaling

    Accounting service business

    Law service business

    Architecture service business

    Engineering service business

    So basically it says….With the above companies, You still can not have shares more than 49.99% , but you can have more than 49.99% of the voting rights. However you still have to report this within 1 yr.

    ***Except those nominee companies, in which you have only 90 days to report and 1 yr to change the structure to comply with the new regulations***

    And I'm in engineering business, so Yippi Yippi for me this time! :o

  12. In fact, no change, if you have a restaurant or other type of business on list 3. If you are not an Amity treaty company or have a Alien Business License, you still can have 99% of the voting rights even if you have 49% of the shares with preferred shares.

    Without wanting to make others do my research..

    Anyone have a link for what companies are clearly in or out of 'list 3' ??

  13. Seems to me the current govt is moving toward “nationalist regime” policy. I just found this interesting article and would like to share with all.

    Read the below article and you will see the parallels /resemblances of us “farangs- today” and the “Chineses – in 1939”, and what might be things to come (strong possibility).

    Thailand Phibun and the Nationalist Regime

    Source: The Library of Congress Country Studies

    The promoters, both civilian and military, had given their political movement a nationalist label, but unanimity among them went no further than acceptance of the official ideology. Although it was essential for the stability of any cabinet that they work together, relations between the civilian and military factions steadily deteriorated as more civil offices went to military personnel. Sensing a tendency toward military rule that he could no longer contain, Phahon retired in December 1938. Phibun took office as prime minister, with his rival, Pridi, as finance minister.

    The Phibun regime sold nationalism to the public by using propaganda methods borrowed from authoritarian regimes in Europe, and nationalism was equated with Westernization. To make clear to the world--in Phibun's words--that the country belonged to the Thai, in 1939 the name of the country was officially changed to Muang Thai (Land of the Free), or Thailand. That same year Pridi introduced his "Thailand for the Thai" economic plan, which levied heavy taxes on foreign-owned businesses, the majority of them Chinese, while offering state subsidies to Thai-owned enterprises. The government encouraged the Thai to emulate European fashions, decreeing, for example, that shoes and hats be worn in public. Betel chewing was prohibited, and opium addicts were prosecuted and, if Chinese, deported.

    Although nationalism was equated with Westernization, it was not pro-Western, either politically or culturally. Thai Christians, especially those in government service, as well as Muslims, suffered official discrimination. The clear inference of government statements was that only Buddhists could be Thai patriots. At its source Thai nationalism was anti-Chinese in character. Regulations were enacted to check Chinese immigration and to reserve for the Thai numerous occupations that had formerly been held predominantly by Chinese.

    Phibun's nationalist regime also revived irredentist claims, stirring up anti-French sentiment and supporting restoration of former Thai territories in Cambodia and Laos. Seeking support against France, Phibun cultivated closer relations with Japan. The Thai nationalists looked to Japan as the model of an Asian country that had used Western methods and technology to achieve rapid modernization. As Thailand confronted the French in Indochina, the Thai looked to Japan as the only Asian country to challenge the European powers successfully. Although the Thai were united in their demand for the return of the lost provinces, Phibun's enthusiasm for the Japanese was markedly greater than that of Pridi, and many old conservatives as well viewed the course of the prime minister's foreign policy with misgivings.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hmm....what do you all think? :o

    Are there any connections to us at all?

  14. The minister said the law will apply mainly to service industries,

    here's the thin end of the wedge .................

    No the minister didn't say that.

    Actually what he said was (just in a general statement)..."In list #3 - most companies are in service industries, and approx 30,000 of them have foriegn shareholding of no more than 49.99% "

    Here's his exact sentence in thai (source Thairath news)

    "ธุรกิจที่อยู่ในบัญชี 3 ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นธุรกิจบริการ และมีการจดทะเบียน โดยมีคนต่างด้าวถือหุ้นไม่เกิน 49.99% ประมาณ 30,000 ราย "
