  6. PHOTO: Dr. Manoon Leechawengwongs More Covid-19 infections and fatalities from the Delta mutant will be increased in Thailand if there is no proper vaccine allocation in the next 100 days, a Pulmonary disease specialist of Vichaiyut Hospital stated online today, August 12th. Dr. Manoon Leechawengwongs of Vichaiyut Hospital predicted the Covid-19 situation in Thailand via his online statement that the number of domestic infections and deaths from the Covid-19’s Delta mutant will continue to increase regardless of how intense the lockdown measures are. The status read: People’s homes have become the place where high infections occurred overall, so some lockdown measures should be relaxed immediately before the Thai economy became even worse. The current measures are only hurting the economy and the people and not stopping the spread of Covid-19. Vaccines are the answer here not tighter restrictions, curfews, and lockdowns.” Full Story: https://thepattayanews.com/2021/08/12/prominent-thai-doctor-says-lockdown-measures-arent-working-tighter-ones-wont-work-either-ease-them-to-save-the-economy-and-consider-an-export-ban-on-covid19-vaccines-and-greatly-boost-vaccinatio/ -- © Copyright The Pattaya News 2021-08-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  7. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has allocated an additional 12.6 billion baht from the government’s central budget to the Ministry of Public Health for its COVID-19 response, covering staff compensation and procurement of medical equipment. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul revealed today that the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has been allocated an additional 12.6 billion baht budget from the government’s central budget to help fund the ministry’s anti COVID-19 operations. The biggest portion of this extra funding, 6.37 billion baht, will be used to fund the procurement of antivirals such as Favipiravir and Remdesivir, as well as other medicinal products and herbal products associated with COVID-19 treatment. A 4.54 billion baht portion will be used to pay overtime and hazard pay to healthcare workers, as well as 1.54 billion baht in funding for the operation of field hospitals, proactive testing events, vaccination sites, and laboratories. Another 215 million baht will be reserved for investment in durable articles and construction. The Minister of Public Health has urged the provinces to complete all disbursement processes by September, especially the overtime pay and hazard pay for healthcare workers. -- © Copyright NNT 2021-08-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  8. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Government Pharmaceutical Organization has announced the winning supplier of 8.5 COVID-19 antigen test kits, after choosing the lowest bidder, and helping the government save 400 million baht in costs. Doctors have however raised concerns over the quality of the test kits from this manufacturer. The Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) today announced it had selected the winner of its 8.5 million COVID-19 antigen test kits supply contract, with delivery expected this month. The GPO’s Deputy Managing Director Sirinuch Cheewanpisalnukul, said today the lowest bidder had been selected by the GPO to supply the test kits at 70 baht per kit, helping save some 400 million baht. She said this low price per unit suggests the current retail price of antigen test kits at pharmacies in Thailand could still be lowered further, from the current average price around 300 baht per kit. Meanwhile, the GPO has been authorized by Rajavithi Hospital to procure 8.5 million antigen test kits to supply the National Health Security Office’s (NHSO) urgent active case finding campaign. The organization is now working closely with Rajavithi Hospital and the NHSO to finalize the contract and distribute the test kits before the end of this month. However, the Rural Doctor Society today released a statement stressing their concerns over the quality of the test kits being procured by the GPO. They say the kits provided by the winning supplier, manufactured by Lepu Medical Technology in China, were recalled in the United States by the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration on 28th May due to the inaccuracy of test results. The Rural Doctor Society has stressed the GPO should only procure antigen test kits which have been approved by the World Health Organization, which involves more stringent certification standards than the Thai FDA. -- © Copyright NNT 2021-08-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  9. The order was posted by the Chonburi Public Relations office last night. The orders conclude, “Many Covid -19 confirmed cases were being found at companies, worker camps, a construction site and dormitories in the Ban Bueng, Si Racha and Mueang Chonburi area.” “In order to control the spread of the virus, the Chonburi communicable disease committee has ordered the following temporary closure of the places below.” Full Story: https://thepattayanews.com/2021/08/12/chonburi-governor-orders-more-covid-19-related-temporary-targeted-closures-several-companies-a-construction-site-worker-camps-and-dormitories/ -- © Copyright The Pattaya News 2021-08-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  10. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha should exercise his powers under the National Security Act to force Siam BioScience, the local producer of the AstraZeneca vaccine, to suspend the export of the vaccine for three months and use those doses domestically instead, to contain the accelerating spread of COVID-19 infections in the country, said Dr. Manoon Leeechawengwong, a specialist in respiratory diseases at Vichaiyut Hospital, in his Facebook post today. He pointed out that no lockdown measures, no matter how rigid they are, will stop the spread of the contagion because home has become the main breeding ground for the disease, as he suggests that the lockdown restrictions should be eased to allow some businesses to resume operations before the economy suffers even more damage. He predicted that, in the next 100 days, half of Thailand’s nearly 70 million population may be infected and unless 40-45 million Thais are vaccinated in the next 100 days, or 500,000 people per day. 11. PHUKET (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has stepped up promotion of Thai tourism abroad, bringing in over 140,000 bookings in only 10 days. Director of the Phuket TAT Office Nantasiri Ranasiri, said today that 29 foreign TAT offices had asked about perceptions of Phuket following recent developments, and confirmed tourist sentiment is still positive about the destination. The province saw an average 190,000 bookings per night in July at the start of its Sandbox program and has already seen an average 148,000 bookings per night since the start of August. Since July 1, the province has received 19,166 visitors. Concern is growing however that an uptick in COVID-19 infections in the nation will affect sentiment, with the TAT office noting that while the US has not outright barred its citizens from traveling to Thailand, it has issued advice to avoid the Kingdom. The TAT has begun a “City Marketing” public relations campaign to clarify the situation, positioning Phuket island as separate from Thailand and highlighting its readiness to receive travelers as a Sandbox attraction under stringent COVID-19 controls. Alongside safety measures for tourists, the TAT is also underlining that flights are operating as usual to the island province. -- © Copyright NNT 2021-08-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  12. This picture taken on March 25, 2019, shows exiled former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra being interviewed by Agence France-presse in Hong Kong. (Photo by ISAAC LAWRENCE / AFP) Politics, whether it’s an extreme dictatorship, mild fascism, or full-blown democracy, is all about magnifying opponents’ faults and belittling your own in the full glare of the public. Motives are to retain power, or get it, or come back to it. Thaksin Shinawatra cannot escape that reality, so the biggest question concerning his current resurgence is: How risky is it? Some will say risks do not exist for someone who has nothing to lose. Others will say Thaksin is not that someone, especially if he still wants to return to Thailand as a hero and “through the front gate of the airport.” Those in-between view him as a politician with not much to lose currently, but with a goal ambitious enough to require smart implementation. If he is defeated in the present showdown with the Thai government, he will just retreat into his shell and nothing much will change, although his supposedly great chances may never come again. 13. Former Pheu Thai MP Dr. Tossaporn Serirak is demanding full disclosure of the distribution of the 1.5 million doses of Pfizer mRNA vaccine, donated to Thailand by the United States. Claiming to represent the “people’s sector”, Dr. Tossaporn submitted a petition this morning (Wednesday) to Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, demanding disclosure, by the Public Health Ministry, of the full details of the distribution of the donated Pfizer vaccine. He told the media that he has received complaints from several frontline medics and others, who are involved in caring for COVID-19 patients and in the disposal of disease-infected waste, expressing doubts about the vaccine distribution, noting that several people, who are not frontline medics or who are not supposed to receive the vaccine, have been vaccinated. 14. FILE PHOTO: Police officers line up as demonstrators protest against the government's handling of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, in Bangkok, Thailand, August 10, 2021. REUTERS/Soe Zeya Tun BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police defended their use of force against protesters as a necessary public safety measure, as the capital Bangkok braced for more demonstrations on Wednesday to demand the prime minister's removal for mismanaging a coronavirus crisis. Police fired tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets https://reut.rs/3lQhS1Z on Tuesday to disperse protesters gathered near the residence of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to show their anger over an outbreak that has seen record deaths in recent days. Thousands of protesters drove in a convoy of cars and motorcycles through Bangkok, stopping at locations linked to cabinet members or supporters of Prayuth, who has defended his strategy to fight the virus. Police said nine officers were injured, one by gunshot to the leg, while the other eight were hurt by firecrackers, rocks and shrapnel from homemade bombs made using ping pong balls. At least two police traffic boxes were set ablaze and other public property damaged, police said. "Police decided to use tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullet because we considered that if we don't, there will be more damage," Bangkok police chief Pakapong Pongpetra told a news conference. Pakapong said 48 people were arrested including 15 youths, and 122 motorcycles were confiscated. Protesters have called for another march to Prayuth's residence on Wednesday. The youth-led movement, which drew broad support during months of large and frequent rallies last year, has seen a recent resurgence coinciding with country's worst COVID-19 outbreak yet, which has accounted for the overwhelming majority of Thailand's more than 788,000 cases and 6,700 deaths. Several core leaders remain in detention awaiting trial for sedition, among other offences. -- © Copyright Reuters 2021-08-11 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  15. BANGKOK, Aug 10 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Aug 9 revoked a recent regulation that banned the dissemination of any fake reports that might frighten the public. The revocation followed the Civil Court’s injunction suspending the imposition of the 29th regulation the prime minister had issued on July 29 by virtue of the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations. The Royal Gazette quoted the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration, which Gen Prayut chaired, as stating that the court’s injunction suspended the imposition of the 29th regulation and thus the regulation should be called off. 21. The Thai baht, once the strongest-performing currency in Asia before the pandemic, has been steadily falling in 2021 and is this year’s worst-hit currency in the region, according to Mizuho Bank. The Japanese bank pointed to “uncharacteristic under-performance in the Thai Baht, rendering it the worst performer to date in 2021” in a note on Friday. The Thai baht has plunged more than 10% against the U.S. dollar year-to-date, as of Monday morning, according to Refinitiv Eikon data. 22. FILE PHOTO: A medical worker prepares a syringe at a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination center in Singapore, March 8, 2021. REUTERS/Edgar Su/File Photo SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore is looking to allow quarantine-free travel for those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 from September, when 80% of the city-state's population should be inoculated, the government said on Monday. Singapore will establish travel corridors with countries or regions where COVID-19 is under control, and those who are vaccinated may not have to quarantine or may be allowed to isolate at home, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said. The city-state is also set to review whether to loosen curbs in early August, when two-thirds of its population would be fully inoculated. "The easing will be differentiated and extended to only vaccinated persons, because they are much better protected against the effects of the virus," Wong said. "If you want to go out to dine in the restaurant or workout in the gym, you have to be fully vaccinated." Last week, the country tightened social curbs, including halting restaurant dining and banning gatherings of more than two people for one month, after a rise in infections. More than half the country has received both doses of either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines. It has inoculated nearly 75% of its 5.7 million people with at least one dose, the world's second-highest rate behind the United Arab Emirates, a Reuters tracker shows. As countries with advanced vaccination campaigns prepare to live with COVID-19 as an endemic disease, their focus is turning to preventing death and serious diseases through vaccination. Still, Singapore may not do away with all of its social distancing measures. For example, it may remove its mask mandate for outdoors, but require people to keep them on in an indoor enclosed environment, Wong said. As of July 25, Singapore had 1,537 active cases, with 12 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen, and two patients in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU). None of the 14 cases is fully vaccinated. -- © Copyright Reuters 2021-07-26

  24. Hospitals in Thailand have been instructed to keep vaccination appointments, even though they may have received fewer doses of vaccine than expected, especially for people over 60 and those suffering from any of seven non-communicable underlying diseases, Deputy Public Health Minister Satit Pitutacha told Thai PBS during the “Tob Jot” TV programme on Monday night. He said that, while most hospitals have received sufficient doses for the launch of mass inoculations on Monday, about 20% received fewer doses than the demand since Monday. He made clear that it was not a mistake by some hospitals, saying that the Public Health Ministry does not want appointments to be postponed, especially for the two groups at high risk, because some of them live far from the hospitals. 25. The answer is “Yes” and “No”. “Yes” because a non-politicised knowledge can help prevent or soften a future pandemic a great deal, if the world manages to get out of this one. “No” because the possibility of the issue being extremely and dangerously politicized is nearly one hundred percent. At the moment, the world’s biggest superpowers cannot even agree on whether the “origin” is a settled question. China, backed by a World Health Organisation investigation, insists that it is and that there is no use reopening it. The United States, backed by some Western allies, demands a new probe. Tension is already high even before a new investigation can begin. Imagine what can happen if the new probe’s results confirm the US claims that the coronavirus came from a lab leak in China. Imagine that the new probe confirms Beijing has been right all along and Washington has been wrong all the time.
