  1. Well iam very pleased and relieved to say my visa trip went fine thanks to the advice received above. 500km ride combined with only 30 mins at the border (did not even cross it physically) Iam now in possession of a 30 day visa exempt stamp.

However! I was told at immigration, very politely may i add, that strictly speaking as i have had a 60 day SETV combined with a 30 day extension and a further 7 day extension my stay without leaving the country has exceeded 90 days and strictly speaking iam not entitled to a visa exempt (news to me). The immigration officer was extremely polite but lacking ih English and this is how i understood what he described. He did however speak to his superior whom agreed to grant me the visa exempt despite this and there we have it. Thank you Ban Pakkan immigration. Iam not sure if i understood correctly or if this will affect me having a 30 day extension on this stamp, i will check with Chonburi immigration tomorrow as i did not want to bother this guy after his kind gesture. Either way its Nong Khai for a SETV next time in either a month or hopefully 2 months.

Actually the "7 day extension" isn't a proper extension, but an allowance for you to leave the country after your application for a second extension was refused.

To say you "just realized" it ended only a week later might seem a stretch if you were stopped with an overstay. Are you sure you got both the 30 day extension and the 7 day allowance to leave the country?

iam very sure, if you see my earlier post where i went to chonburi immigration yesterday while it was still valid and they advised regarding an unnofficial waiver for 24hrs

I really am puzzled as to why the OP spent today posting on TV rather than just going to the border. Some people seem to just like living dangerously. He will probably get away with it but, if he encounters problems, he only has himself to blame.

The OP was too ill to travel today, it would be fairer to just ask the question as oppose express your opinions and assumptions without any factual basis for such

You will get a 30 day entry at the any border crossing since you are from the UK under the G7 country rule.

If you go to the Ban Pakard crossing (nearest to Pattaya) you will likely not have a problem getting an entry. If you were going to Poi Pet then I would say it could be a problem.

Map of crossings is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?ll=12.36849%2C104.361086&spn=2.58554%2C3.621642&hl=en&msa=0&source=embed&ie=UTF8&mid=12ZbsV8mzWzOtktnqnz_vTYlwhrg

checking other forum posts its saying i cannot get a visa exempt anywhere, these are from 2015?

All this 'Unlikely to get arrested' I find pretty strange advice considering the law now plainly states that if your stopped on a short overstay, it involves arrest and a years ban from entering Thailand!

Personally, I consider riding a motorbike through a check Point particularly with the referendum security being put in place, really is the last thing to be doing.

A cab to the airport today, pay the one day overstay and fly out even if it means a weekends stop over to get it sorted would be what I would be doing.

Immigration have just confirmed it to me regarding only 24hrs only

  7. As a small update for all i have just been to Chonburi immigration and been advised that i will have no issues traveling through checkpoints with only a one day overstay as a 24hr leaniency period is allowed. only question is now do i go to cambodia or laos, based on advice above i beieve these are my options 1) i would only get 15 days with a visa exempt at cambodia (if i got one at all) but could re-enter same day, 2) would get 30 day visa exempt at Laos and could re enter same day 3) SETV at Loas i would have to stay there the entire weekend. Have i got this correct?

IMO doing an out/in visa exempt with an overstay is not a good idea at the Thai/Cambodian borders. They are far more unpredictable and inconsistent when it comes to out/in visa exempt entry than the Laos borders. I would go to Nong Khai so that if you have a problem re-entering using visa exempt entry you can go to Vientiane for a visa.

based on your advice though its not worth me going to laos and getting a visa until Monday am but that means travelling with a 4 day overstay through checkpoints en route, sounds risky? no problem paying for overstay but i do not want to be apprehended

If you apply on Friday you will not be able to pick up your passport until Monday afternoon,

Yeah of course forget about that. so if my understanding is correct i can get a 30 day visa exempt in cambodia, return same day and then extend for 30 days? Thanks for the information by the way. Will still have to risk travelling there tomorrow with a 1 day overstay and fine

You could make a quick to trip to the Cambodian border today to get a visa exempt entry unless you have several recent ones. You would get 30 days if you are from a G7 country or 15 days if not. You could then get a 30 day extension of the entry,

If you are plan on getting another tourist visa in Vientiane you may not have enough time left this week to do it unless you can be at the embassy by 11:30 tomorrow.

You could also apply for a 7 day extension. pay 1900 baht and be given 7 days to leave the country.

i already have the 7 day addittional extension and being british i would only get 15 days at cambodia, Why 11.30am tomorrow, what about crossing the border tomorrow and getting there first thing friday?

  11. I totally agree. I used visa run vans twice (Bkk to Vientiane). Both of my drivers tailgated at high speeds, recklessly passed other vehicles, and they seem to have a death wish. I also noted that the highways lack sufficient krails/barriers to keep vehicles from flying if the roadways. A simple tire blowout can put a visa run van into a tree or worse. Eithway it would probably be over or you would wish it was. An incident of road rage was also experienced. One driver for an 8 hour race to the border with a dozen paying passengers. Thanks for not killing me. I will never give them another chance.

I am so sorry to say, but your very sensible father would never allow you to ride your bike on such a long trip in the second most dangerous country for highway accidents (or deliberate attacks). Also, It would take you two days each way without driving at night.

I strongly suggest flying Thai Air Asia instead. You should be able to save on the airfare by flying Don Maung to Udon Thani. I did this last month for my first time. About 2,000 roundtrip including 20 kg of check-in luggage! It's less if you only have 7 kg carry-on!!

Upon arrival at the Udon Thani Arrival's Terminal, approach the Taxi-Limo Service Counter. They will get you to the border for 200 baht! You quickly cross the border on your own. Then, as soon as you enter Laos, ignore the guys offering rides into Vientiane. Look for the green government bus. Its like 60 baht to the center of town (Vientiane).

Get back to the airport approximately the same way. I am 63 can handled this method of travel quite easily and will repeat soon.

That's my suggestive advice. If you can afford the visa run van service, flying is only ever so slightly more and extremely worth it. I'll bet that if you survive a bike trip, you would not repeat doing the ride a second time around. The best of luck to you mate!

Thank you for the advice but i have recently completed one of many long trips on a motorbike in Thailand the last one being 8500km around the entire border. Iam no stranger to the hazards of riding motorcycles in thailand and also an accomplished long distance rider with the motorbike to suit. The distance is approx 750km so an 8hr ride easily achievable in one day each way during daylight.

  12. after exiting Thai immigration you catch a bus over the bridge to Laos immigration where you apply for your visa.

Whilst waiting for Laos visa to be processed it is a good idea to TALK to others around you....many are doing the same as you and heading to the consulate for a Thai visa. You can group up and share a taxi , minivan or tuk tuk from bridge to consulate. Also share info about hotels for the overnight stay.

Remember to take photo, US $ and A PEN ( amazing how many people at border have no pen to fill in the visa application form.

useful advice thanks. how much USD i need?

The cost of your Lao visa depends on your nationality. Common is US$35. It can be cheaper or up to a maximum of US$42.

Iam British so probably 100USD ha ha

  14. Though iam sure this question will probably have been asked before but i cannot find a relevant post so basically iam based in chonburi and hate using the visa services mainly due to the way the minibus drivers drive. So iam looking to ride up to nong khai on my motorbike, stay overnight at a hotel and leave the motorbike there whilst crossing the border over friendship bridge as a foot passenger. iam just wondering how complicated this is to do? Obviously i will also have to apply for the SETV at the embassy as well and stay overnight in Vientianne.

  15. Hi

Iam a british national and entered Thailand late December, i then did a 30 day extension at Jomtien immigration with no issues. (after a 4 day overstay of this due to reasons not worth discussing i paid my dues and left by air) I then flew to KL and did a overnight stay, return and received a further 30 days tourist. My question is can i extend this again? (unsure i will be stopping due to awaiting work) what are my options if i need stay even longer still? say 6 months?

  16. Their is a honorary consulate in Istanbul where you should be able to apply for a visa. Not sure you will be able to get the METV or just a single entry tourist visa.

    Thai Consulate

Address: Kore Şehitleri Cad./mithat Ünlü Sok. No:16, Şişli/Istanbul - Europe, Turkey

    Phone:+90 212 292 8651

Tourist visa requirements are here on the Embassy website: http://thaiembassyturkey.com/en/consular-service/consular-service-4/tourist-visa-general-nationalities

Thank you, what does a single entry give me that i do not get with a visa on arrival?

  17. Hi

Iam a British National currently living and working in Istanbul Turkey (For Information the Thai embassy is in Ankara a good 4 hr drive from Istanbul)

Iam also the owner of a condo in Thailand if that makes any difference or not iam unsure but what are my visa options? its becoming tiresome with only 30 day tourist visas and iam not old enough to apply for retirement visa. The METV seems ok for 6 months but means i would have to have 3 days to travel to Ankara anmd back just to obtain it as it needs one day to obtain and has to be done in person.
