  1. Some help for a worried friend.

My mate is going to do his border stamp which he has done every month for god knows how many years, but the difference this time is he has 3 highlighted stamps from his last 3 visits can anybody give any information on if they are actually turning people away. He is in his 60's and a writer not a teacher but i dont suppose that matters anymore, has anybody been in a similar situation?

    Cheers Mike

  2. Yeah it is the same for me I work at a government school in the south and I get better salary than most other teachers at private schools in the area, I get paid 12 months of the year my visa work permit and all cost are taken care of, my salary is always on time if not early. Ok sometimes the teaching is harder as there are bigger classes and the standard is as great as the richer schools but the majority of the students want to learn and give all the teachers the utmost respect.

  3. Hello Uti

Well I have lived in Trang for 4 years now and hope I can offer so helpful information.

As other members have said there are a lot of travel shops in Trang near the Train station offering deals to all the islands in Trang and South. I have a very good friend who owns a travel shop and always does as much as he can to provide the best deals and help you plan anywhere you want to go. With regards to all the Islands in Trang, they are all beautiful with excellent clear water for snorkeling and some beautiful coral. There is not really a lot to do on any of the Islands except that and total relaxation. I have recently just come back from Koh Hai which again is very beautiful and offers some excellent snorkeling but believe me stay well away from Koh Hai resort, its is more expensive that Europe and with regards to accommodation well moths and damp spring to mind, although they did have a swimming pool so that is an only plus for them.

With regards to eating, well!! there are a lot of very nice proper thai food restaurants out of the town, within the town you will get the same tasting food as per all resort type places but if you venture out just a little there is some amazing eating to be had. If you mail me nearer the time to when you are coming or contact me with a pm I will give you my phone number and will gladly show you some nice places to go and eat.

Well hope this helps you and have a good stay in Trang.

  4. I've not had this problem, but I'm working through an agency. Are you? I don't have a degree, but I've been unaffected by many of the goings-on I've read about. I teach at a govt school in SE Bangkok.

Maybe going through an agency, the school accepts their word that everything is OK. Just don't mention the truth, and do an acceptable job. Chancy - yes, but so far so good.

I am also working in a government school, Mathayom Watkhuanwises School Trang, as i have heard every Farrang English teacher will have to take this test, why they had a cut off date at the 28th November i dont know, maybe this new licence is a time saving device, where as when you have got it you dont have to bother with all the usual crap when renewing your teacher licence. But to be honest i dont really know, i know of new teachers in Phuket that have started new schools after October 2006 and this exam has never been mentioned Private and government schools. So your guess is as good as mine,

    Lets wait and see.

I bet i will be told the exam is tomorrow, i normally find things out under 24 hours before they happen but that is one of the joys of living here in the los.

Happy teaching all, christmas is next week, dried out chicken from Tesco loads of beer and regency, my school is closed from 23rd to 3rd of NEW YEAR :o

HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL :D

    Mike :D

  5. Well i have paid my 500 baht also and i am still waiting for someone to tell me when the exam will be and where, i am teaching down in Trang in the south so im not sure if it will take longer for the papers to filter down here.

I was advised by our head that the exam will contain English grammar, language, thai culture and so on.

So i suppose its just wait and see time.

    Mike

I have heard so many different things, but im sure its a non failure exam

  6. I am selling my solomon gprs computer modem as tot have now realised that we are in the 21st century and people need telephone lines in their homes.

I brought it 9 months ago and have only used it for about 3 months. Perfect for someone who has a lap top or like me dont have a telephone line in their house.

Selling as new with all software 4,000 - brought new 6,900 so a bargin for anyone.

    Mike

P.s. photo on request but easier to go and look in a computer shop yourself.

  7. Just a quick post, i am m 29 and my wife is 38 we have been together 5 years now and are living very happily together not a bad mix in ages ok she doesnt like to drink or go to pubs but i look at that as a good thing, i can go out with my mates for a few drinks without her and that is cool, saves me money and i dont get digs in the side for looking at the goodies around the bars. Not saying that i play away from home but its rude not to look. One thing i will say she doesnt look her age so i suppose i dont even think about the age thing and nothing even started looking south so i think it is all about the individual person.

Just thought i would post that as i am bored off my nut at school waiting to go home.

  8. Teaching license, work permit, visa?

    Had to ask.

    "Steven"

Probably not, but they will throw in lots of hastles, no communication and the inability to organise a piss up in a brewery! :o

No really, advertise on ajarn, you'll get loads more interested people. But make sure you specify native speakers only, otherwise you'll get 10,000 Philipino's replying. More Power too you!

Ha ha lol not the same as most other schools, yes they will pay for your work permit but you have to have a non b visa, all documentation is provided, and teacher license is taken care of also.

Will have a go on Ajarn.com, this really is a god job at a great school.

    Cheers

  9. Well im sorry i dont know where those pics are from but i have just comeback from Samui and talking with some Thai friends who are looking to find such a place, they have mentioned many of the above places, Ao Nang (NO, NO) Koh Lanta (no no) chumphon (didnt mention it) (Trang but Islands are too small) Sooooo where will it be :o

Interesting reading and please tell me cobra where your pics are taken

    Mike :D

  10. I am pretty sure that the average Thai wife would feel disrespected.....even if she helped you out on that adventure. She would likely feel herself inadequate.

It seems to me the wife is challenging him (and their marriage) for whatever reason. Could be risky, or not; who knows?

Not all marriages are the same.

    LaoPo

Well this topic has been a very good read, but i know my wife would proberly kill me if i ever had another woman or come to think of even mention that i wanted a "mia noi"

But Bbigman are you going to call her bluff :o

  11. My parents have offered to pay for me to take my son back to the Uk for a holiday so he can meet everybody.

He doesnt have a passport yet English or Thai, he is only 1year and 4 months.

I want to leave this month hopefully and stay in the Uk for about 1 month, is it easiest for me to obtain a thai passport rather than an english passport then get him a visa?

Would be grateful for any information regarding this, and how long it is likley to take.

I went back with the wife 2 years ago and obtained her visa on the same day, but she already had a passport. Can neone tell me what sort of time period this will take, i live in Trang in the South so dont really want to be doing too many trips to bkk if necessary.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mike

  12. Hello, has anyone had a chance to look at the website I produced yesterday, anyone from Trang? Satun? I think there are at least two links to the site with the same kind of idea, that after the Tsunami struck, rich foreigners particulary Asians, at least not Thais, were pushing people off ocean front property. Does anyone have any local info they would like to share? Oh 'Mike' you've been in Trang for 3 years. Are you teaching? Adios Amigoes, Landman.

Not heard nething about this but i teach a Lawyer who is a Land lawyer so i will ask him if he know nething about this, he covers the whole of the South so i am sure he must know something.

Landman yes i am teaching here in Trang and have been for the last 2 1/2 years, last week at school this week then a nice 3 month holiday, so i will be doing so extensive travelling around Trang and neighbouring provinces trying to find a few bargins.

Will let you know if i hear nething about these forigners .

    Cheers

  13. I suscribed to ais 12call and i pay 120 baht for 120 hours, so you can do you sums it is very cheap. You are told how many minutes or hours you have each month but you have to use those 25 hours in the month.

Only downside to this connection its not very fast.

    Hope this info helps

    Mike

Sorry mate I can't follow you, you say 120 baht for 120 hours then you say you have to use your 25 hours. The 25 hours is in relation to what? Also would it be ok enough to do yahoo mail? Thanks

Ok made a bit of a mess of that, the figs are as folows

120 baht for 25 hours - you must use the 25 hours in the month or you lose them, but hey its only 120 baht, and yes its more than enough to do mail

    Mike

  14. I would like you to check out a website that I found before I went to Pilian that is still fresh in my mind: 2Bangkok.com/quakesmore.shtml click on "Wealthy grab disputed land" and let me know what you think, because it concerns the good people of your area. I believe that area has very friendly people. Landman.

Em!! this area is Phangna and not Trang so i think your bearings are a little messed up, im not sure if you have been to Trang but we are about 4 hours away from Phangna, which is nearer to Phuket not Trang.

Trang is a very peaceful place in my experiences, but you will always get the crazy thais doing what they want to themselves, but as a westerner who has been living here (in trang) three years i have never seen or heard of these goings on which you are refering to, i invite you to come and see what you are missing, Trang is proudly "mafia free" and is the best place i have ever visited in Thailand.

As you should know Trang is massive for rubber, there are processing plants everywhere.

Of course i have experienced some cheaper land around Trang but not with good access water electricity which are major factors to consider when buying also if the land is on the main road of in the hills, and is chanot (spelling) :o

So do come and treat yourself and maybe a bargin for yourself.

    Mike

  15. Very True also, I bought the new hilander 2 months ago 3.0l and get about 15 litres so yes the fuel consumption is better, i dont mind the look of the Mitsu or Toyota but after driving the All three i much prefered the Isuzu. Also the extras on the Isuzu Twin Airbags, cd/tape/mp3 xenon headlights, rear belts, liner, free insurance well need i say more

    Mike

  16. Ok well i didnt really see ne thing on Trang there but i can say that i have lived here three years and we dont have the problems you are talking about.

But ne way talking about land as the subject is, to my surprise i was offered 30 rai of Rubber tree land at the weekend at 80,000 baht a rai, 15 rai of the thirty is 12 years old and the other 15 rai will be ready to harvest in two years, all the documents are in order so i take back what i said about not seeing land cheaper than 100,000 per rai as i am now rubbing my hands together.

    Mike :o
