  3. Governments in Peru in recent years have been anything but stable. The country has seen a series of presidents ousted and a number of ex-presidents sent to prison for crimes committed during their time in office. In one memorable week in 2020, the country had three presidents in the space of only five days. But even by Peru's standards, what happened on 7 December and the week which followed was jaw-dropping both because of the speed with which events unfolded and their consequences.
  4. The Bank of England has once again raised interest rates – this time by 0.5 percentage points – taking the base rate to 3.5%. This is the ninth rise since last December. So what does this mean for your finances? How will it affect mortgage payments? Today’s move is yet more bad news for the approximately 2.2 million people on a variable rate mortgage, who are already having to contend with a raft of rising costs. Many now face paying hundreds of pounds extra a year.
  5. A woman who was told to stand up and turn around before being slapped on the bottom with a ruler by her male manager has settled a sexual harassment case for £90,000. After complaining to her company, she was treated like a troublemaker and her former employer – based in Northern Ireland – alleged she had “dressed and behaved provocatively”, she said.
  6. The Thai King's eldest daughter collapsed from a heart condition on Wednesday evening, Thailand's royal palace says. Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of King Vajiralongkorn, collapsed while training her dogs north-east of Bangkok, the palace said. The 44-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, then taken by helicopter to Bangkok, where she is being treated. The palace described her condition last night as "stable to a certain extent". Medical bulletins from the royal palace in Thailand are typically vague and cryptic, and from the single statement issued about Princess Bajrakitiyabha, it is difficult to gauge how serious her condition is, says the BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok. 8. It is literally a miracle that more asylum seekers didn’t die in the Channel in the early hours, according to an informed source. The rescue by the fishing vessel was exemplary. Tragically, some on the flimsy craft are still not found though. There was a mix of nationalities - Syrians, Eritreans, only a small proportion from Albania. They were drifting in sub zero temperatures for hours. It is unusual for these journeys to be so late at night. The people smuggling gangs, who take desperate asylum seekers money and push them out to sea alone, are without consciences, appalling criminals.
  9. Three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker was released from prison on Thursday morning and he is set to be deported from the UK. The former tennis star was sentenced to two-and-a-half years behind bars back in April for hiding millions of pounds worth of assets
  10. Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati fell unconscious yesterday evening, suffering heart related symptoms, as she was training her dog to take part in the Thailand Working Dog Championship in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The princess was immediately rushed to Pak Chong Nana Hospital, according to the Bureau of the Royal Household. Later, the Princess was flown to Bangkok by helicopter for admission to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. The Bureau of the Royal Household said that doctors at the hospital will conduct a thorough examination and administer appropriate medical treatment. Full article courtesy ThaiPBS
