  1. I've been going to "LANA BARBER SHOP" in Chiang Mai Land for past 5 years.

Don't ask me the name of the guy, he has the SECOND Chair as you enter the shop. My wife does all the negotiating. Quite Inexpensive and an excellent job. Prices are Listed on the Wall, alongside his Mirror. I always give him a 20-Baht Tip. (Wife says that is ENOUGH!)

Don't get confused with another "more modern" looking Unisex Hair Salon a couple of doors further down near the 7/11.

Thanks so much for the suggestion . went there today and was very satisfied. Haircut I would say 8.5 of 10 and a shave 9.5 out of 10. I'll go back

  2. I'm not familiar with the esso station is this the same side as varee near the b2 hotel? sounds like its worth checking out. do they have quite a large menu range?

    thanks

It's on the same side as Varee school on Mahidol road. Literally between the entrance to the school and the exit from the school. Directly across the street on the side of the road heading to Sankapank is an Esso station.

We went back a second time at 2 in the afternoon and it about 80-90% full.

  3. My wife and I have spent considerable time at Varee school enrolling our daughter for the upcoming term. Well between the entrance to Varee school (on mahidol road) and the exit (across from the Esso station) is an absolutely wonderful new Thai restaurant. It's in the same parking lot as an existing restaurant. The building is round filled with antiques and unusual decorations. The staff and owner are polite and attentive to our needs and the food was perfect. Everything that we ate was superb and the fresh fruit drinks were interesting and tasty as well. They have a number of banners on the road but you easily drive past it unless you slow down and look for the entrance

  4. I like to get out for one day of Songkran merry-making, and today was it!

I left the house at 10:30, walked down Huay Kaew Road and along the north side of the moat until Chiang Puak Gate. Pretty active even at that early hour. I thought I'd get all the way to Thapae Gate before getting very wet, but I was mistaken. I turned into the Old City, sticking to the smaller sois for the shade and to avoid the moat water. Reached the plaza in front of the gate to find it shoulder to shoulder with laughing people, Thais and visitors alike, all very busy getting each other wet. My usual lunch restaurant had every table full by noon, with a full mix of Thais, western tourists, and Chinese. The waiters had to constantly remind the Chinese tourists not to throw water inside the restaurant.... Other than that, it was a pretty well mannered crowd.

After lunch, and a wet stroll along the inside of the moat, I came to the conclusion that a LOT more ice was being used this year. I can't say that I enjoy getting a bucket of ice water down my back, but better than than moat water, I guess. But the sounds of laughter outweighed the gasps of cold, and everyone, young and old, seemed to be enjoying Songkran. Perhaps it was the early hour, or perhaps the lack (or reduction) of alcohol consumed, but it seemed to me that there was less 'violence' in the water being thrown. In four hours of watching, I never saw anyone jump out in front of a motorbike and 'hurl' water full into the driver's face. I'm sure it went on somewhere, but I didn't see any of that this year.

I saw a lot of the high-pressure 'tube' guns being used... those long, thin power-piston single shot hand-held water cannons that have been outlawed for the past three years... I saw a lot of pickup trucks with outlawed barrels of water in the back. As far as 'inappropriate dress' was concerned... only the farangs were running around in bathing suits, the guys without shirts, the girls in bikini tops. Personally, I think it's fine, but I guess the government doesn't. I DID see quite a few young Thai women wearing 'traditional' Thai-style dresses, looking lovely but uncomfortable when wet...

Lots of vendors selling a lot food. BBQ's set up every few meters along the moat. I guess "chicken flavored with klong water' is a big seller. 'Sprayed Meatballs' seem popular too. But after a couple of hours, I figured I'd had enough for this year. ducked back into the smaller sois and wandered back home, there to dry off for another year, having blessed and been blessed by this years Songkran holiday.

    Happy New Year, Thailand!

    Riveting !!

  5. Good topic. Can someone tell please inform me where I can get a decent burger in CM. thanks

I've been hearing alot good things about Classic Burgers.

from who ??? I've never seen a restaurant receive more negative publicity than Classic. The thread running through every comment is the FF are pretty good and the burgers suck. Dukes who normally is extremely diplomatic in his reviews gave classic a revolting minus one

thank you for pointing me in the right direction

  7. They are all over the place, just tell them what you want.

Not entirely true. I tried that and he proceeded to shave my neck with a straight edge razor and NO shave cream.

Did you explain clearly and in detail what you wanted in Thai before you sat down? Did he clearly agree to it all?

Aren't there any universally accepted rules while cutting hair. I'm looking for a barber who will know how to professionally cut hair with a contract

  8. I know everybody probably got bored of this.

I was in Classic this week for a breakfast pattie but mainly to scrounge off their great internet connection.

Whilst I was there a large stainless steel meat mincer was delivered shortly followed by what looked like a good portion of cow in one piece. The guy, who i presume is the owner, said that they were going to make their own burgers from scratch including mincing up the meat. He said they were using

Rib Eye steak and following advice from Heston Blumental.

Personally I think they opened five years too late as there are burger places everywhere in Chiang Mai now but if his aim is to produce the best burger in CM he seems to be going the right way about it.

By the way, I asked, he is from Hawaii

what an incredible coincidence. The last time that you were at classic you noticed they have a proper flame grill not a hot plate like most other places. This time you witnessed the delivery of a mincer and half a cow. You have the uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time. BTW rib eye steaks come from less than 10% of the entire animal so if you saw what looked like a good portion of a cow, I'm positive that a small fraction of that was rib eye. Rib eye coming from angus or charolais would be a superior cut of meat, but coming from a local poorly fed cow would not have the same quantities

    Are you a butcher?

Heston Blumenthal uses sirloin for his burgers NOT rib eye, so if you haven't ground the large portion of cow yet cut it into steaks

  9. I spent a good deal of time in the mideast where men had a huge choice of salons and barber shops for almost daily hair and beard grooming. I've been looking in Chiang Mai for a similar shop who can attend to giving a hair cut the "old fashion" way. i.e. neck and head message. hair and beard done by scissors and comb with little use of electric trimming machine

  11. OK I'm putting this to bed. After research i've discovered that the owner is a Chinese investor trying to break into the Chiang Mai restaurant scene. Classic is his first venture and I'm sure not his last. I wish Khun Phatmaas the best of luck

  12. post-254845-0-14412700-1459746748_thumb.

Classic burgers has this spray mist cooling system designed to cool off their customers. Well let me tell you if they are using city water which is not intended for consumption, when this water is atomised it can enter the pulmonary system. If you ingest it, it could cause gastrointestinal problems, however if you breath in the same water it's particles are so small that that it could enter your lungs and that is no walk in the park. I believe that's how legionaries disease started. I'm not suggesting that Classic burgers is the only one doing that but it's worth avoiding if you can.

  13. I was on my way there to have lunch just to give them one more try. It was empty at 12:20pm and I felt odd being the only one there so I passed. It seems even for free they are not getting any takerspost-254845-0-48928200-1459668402_thumb.

  14. This thread may get Classic Burgers a lot of first time customers but not so many second time customers. I tried both Classic Burgers and Rock Me Burgers in the same week as a result of this thread and in my opinion Rock Me Burgers wins hands down. I would never go back to Classic Burgers after going to Rock Me Burgers.

I agree 100%. It seems that novice business owners have no vision as to what happens after the first burst of enthusiasm of a new restaurant.

I noticed that they have a huge sign saying "if your not happy with your burger ITS FREE" Maybe we should hasten their eventual decline by everybody who feels that they've been let down in classic burgers to demand a free burger. Let's see how long they can withstand that barrage of dissatisfied customers.

  15. Every now and then the burger and pizza crew on ThaiVisa picks up on a mediocre but unoffensive burger or pizza joint and praises the hell out of it.

Only if its sub 150 baht.

is that what you feel happened with classic burgers a mediocre and inoffensive burger joint that members praised just for fun to see what would happen
I wouldn't presume to know people's motives. Whether it's due to boredom, because it's big fun, or just because of a lack of taste, is not for me to say. But my guess would be that people who are praising the place really liked it.

Then what exactly inspired you to write that sentence ?

  17.

Well, I believe that this has run it's course. The contributors have been many from AWK who eats at classic not because the burgers are tasty nor because he likes the fries but as an escape from boredom to Dukes who put the final nail in Classic's coffin. <deleted>

I apologize for the nail. Both the chips at Rock Me and the fries at Classic were delicious and tasty. If I had a Rock Me Or a Classic burger in front of me I would choose the Rock Me. If I had a Aussie Boys, Fat Elvis, Rock Me or Classic burger I would choose the Aussie Boys. They have a flavorful spread that compliments the meat on their burger. Hopefully this is nice enough. Again I apologize.

I also meant Fat Elvis not Loco Elvis in a previous post. I'm confused with all the Elvi.

sigh--you said what everybody thinks. That was your only crime. I rode by classic at 5:45 pm yesterday and there only one couple in the place. On the way home I rode by again at 8:10pm and it was empty. The only thing that mr. Awk said that made any sense was "we don't get bored with all of the controversy surrounding classic" I wish them luck but with the constant barrage of descriptions such as "dry, mild, not as tasty as other places and add to that it takes sooo long to prepare I'm afraid that they are doomed.
