  1. The comparison with a Captain for blue water angling is good. For example I will always seek out a good captain versus a good boat.

I know many guys who will let the crew set up their rigs, bait the hooks, catch bait fish and be content to be handed the rod and reel it in. But as you say that's not really fishing.

A good captain / guide should do everything they can to put you on to where the fish are feeding, to give you the opportunity to catch them, and even pointers on how to do it and improve your game. there's nothing wrong with that, we all have areas we could improve in (for example after many years I still seek feedback on my knots) but ultimately it should then be up to you to put what you learned into practice and go out and catch them.

I don't begrudge people choosing to reel in a fish someone else has caught, it can be a lot of fun too, but it is not as satisfying as having caught it yourself, and you can not really lay claim to it, if you only reeled it in.

  2. As mentioned, water is the principal reason, I know of some high rises that do have basements (or say subterranean water tanks.. yes its a stupid design). The walls constantly suffer from ground water seepage and need frequent resealing.

So it is possible but it is not in any way practical.

  3. There's a video on the net with a guy called Matt Hayes fishing for Wells catfish on the Ebro river in Spain, they were using boilie like pellets. Quite a bit bigger than the average boilie though

The key will be ingredients. Perhaps try integrating bread and Lam into the mix, and flavour it with the attractants that they use as BSR (coconut milk seems popular).

  4. Sweeping statements such as avoid everyone and everything should be taken with a healthy dose of salt.

What it all boils down to is: YOU.

You need to do some home work.

Real estate here is sold as seen (for the most part) and as such the onus is on you to investigate the structural integrity of say your house etc. (Unless the seller is contractually obliged to do so in your agreement with you).

In the case of a condominium, the seller of an individual unit is unlikely to be able to give you any guarantees as to it structural integrity, however they could provide copies of annual reports of their AGM's or EGMs where major repairs and problems should be discussed.

If you want to find out if the neighbours are 'bad', who can say? It's too subjectove, so the best you can do is meet them, yourself.

Before you use an agent (or any consultant for that matter) verify their track record, ask around for opinions and get references. Why would you let the agent appoint an engineer to do your structural due diligence, YOU should be the one who does this. Agents of course can provide contact details but if you want to avoid conflicts of interest you need to recognise that most agents work solely for the vendor. Some more enlightened agents realise that this is a short term outlook, but if you work on that assumption you can remove problematic issues before they arise.

If however you let the agent and lawyer do everything for you, even when it may be a conflict of interest then you open yourself up to trouble.

    Caveat Emptor

  5. A 200m diameter wheel can accommodate a little over 100 gondolas.

Each of these can accommodate approximately 8-10 people (even in the London Eye you dont get to go up by yourself, rather you can hire a gondola for your own but at a higher rate!).

So let's say 750 passengers per rotation which lasts about 30 minutes.

If operating hours are the same as London Eye say, 10.00am - 9.30pm non stop.

That will be 23 'flights' per day.. you do the maths.

  6. If the concept is the similar to say Beijing's Great Wheel the main revenue earner is actually the support retail components i.e F&B, souvenirs, and other surrounding tourist type attractions and various other family friendly amusements on the same site. So much more than what's on offer in London. In essence it would be a small theme park.

    It could be very successful.

Think about it, apart from seediness, shopping and culture (temples, Palaces etc) Bangkok does not really have much in the way of major tourist attractions. You could do Bangkok in 3-4 days no problem.

A project like this could feasibly add another day's stopover in the capital to the tourist's itinerary before they move on to the beach etc. It would be a must see, and would bring more revenue to the city and the hospitality industry in Bangkok.

As to whether it could make money at the stated cost, well lets just say, I have my doubts...

  7. Thanks Rob, my parents are also visiting me before my next big trip, but am concerned about their luggage allowance. I'll consider it but am not too worried about getting one to be honest I don't expect to be breaking many records :)

  8. They are harder to find than one might think. I'm looking for one myself. The only ones I have seen in tackle stores are the boja fish grips with built in scales which go for close to 4000.

If you only need to weigh your luggage, you might be better off buying a cheap set of bathroom scales (less than 1000) and then weigh yourself with and without holding your luggage.

I'll be watching this thread with interest though.

  9. Slightly longer answer also = no but it can be playable.

Your Ping works like that of the ping associated with sonar technology. Its a measure of the time it takes for packets of data to get from your PC to the game server. This can only move so fast, so the further you are away from the server the higher your ping will be. Some software is available that helps you to speed this up, but it doesn't help that much (at least not that it will be noticeable to you 300ms does not feel much different to 270ms).

So no, not much you can do other than learn to compensate. In some games you can do this shooting earlier, loose a few more rounds off, aim ahead of their movement, or use a weapon with a higher rate of fire (even if it means less damage).

  10. Hello, whilst I have used my father's Pentax 35mm SLR for many years I never really used it properly, so consider myself a keen novice.

For all intents and purposes moving on from a P&S to learning how to use my Olympus EP1 properly.

  11. It makes sense to me. It is new. I was also not asked for (and nor did I produce) a medical certificate when I renewed my 5 year driving license last month.

I had to do the colour blindness, reaction and peripheral vision tests.

I also had to watch the hour long video with English subtitles. Fun fun fun... it warns of the dangers of being shot if you cut someone off, and encourages everybody to wear seatbelts, except kids in the back seats who it seems are free to do whatever the heck they like (not a child's car seat in sight)

  12. As expats we are not really advising holiday makers on what to do or pay.

Of course holiday makers can ask questions and draw on our experience and the information that we choose to share. Most of us here are happy to help.

However, you are unlikely to see many glowing reviews of tour companies by the resident expat anglers here though, because most of us don't use them.

I am at times 'anti-tour companies'. I think they charge high rates for a service which I don't really need. (Not knocking their business at all, good luck to them. They provide a service which is useful for holiday makers)

As expats we have the luxury of visiting our local spots often, so have the time to learn the techniques and nuances needed to catch fish there.

Would I use a guide to fish elsewhere in Thailand? Hmm only if they could get me access to locations that would be otherwise inaccessible to me.

I prefer to do some homework and tackle new waters myself. Its part of the appeal of fishing, to me.

Victor, if you want to go it alone (you can probably get a local guide at the lakes themselves) then you might be interested in my Google maps project which identifies the location of many freshwater fishing parks in Thailand.

Bungsamran, Fishing World and many others are there.

If you have google maps on your phone, you can save it and use it to find the park yourself when you arrive.

You can access it direct here

    or via my blog here

  13. Just add as much as you can. You can add the smaller ones too (Unless they are your secret special spots :) )

I will also be adding a few small parks as well the well known natural locations where I also like to fish, eg Srinakarin Dam (Just need to remember where I stayed and how to find it again on google maps and I will go ahead and add it)

Also perhaps you have latest pricing information for the places you do fish that would be useful. Perhaps you can add contact details for booking directly the parks operators (but not via tour guides please)

I know you fish Shadow lake (I have never been) so would appreciate feedback on that entry particularly.

If you want to help, drop me a PM with your email address so I can invite you as a contributor.

  14. Thanks for the reply Rob, they are pretty good.

I have taken most from John-tom and have confirmed several spots that I have visited myself. (But I have not visited all of them yet)

Its not all of john-tom's coordinates either, Fishing World for example I added myself and am confident in its location.

Would be great if people can add any missing parks. Remember this does not have to be just in an around Bangkok, anywhere in Thailand. Phuket, Chiang mai, Pattaya etc.

Just for the record I have no intention of ever making it a commercial site.

Initially made for my own convenience, so I can find these spots whilst on the road, its meant to be a community resource for all anglers in Thailand.

The idea being that everyone can update pricing policies, contact details, baits and tips etc on each park. Perhaps even add reviews (if that's possible)

I have also thought of making it publicly editable
