I think he does and he's not far off the mark let's be honest but as long as most of that does not impact us too much we should be ok.

Regrettably - yes we live in Thailand.....Broken Record must be another of the 'blinkered' people that actually like Thailand?!? How sad.... But by the sounds you must live in a nuclear bunker and wear full-body Kevlar armour to escape all the horrible people that abound in this 3rd world backwater?

Interesting that there are still people thinking Thailand is the same great place it was 15-30 years ago...

I first started visiting Thailand nearly 25 years ago - and loved it. Warm friendly people, beautiful tropical islands, cheap food and accommodation etc. But Thailand today is completely different. It is without doubt the most racist country I have even lived in, has levels of crime and corruption that are virtually off the scale (Transparency International recently named Phuket as 'the most corrupt city in Asia') and practically everyone you come into contact with is a scam artist, con-man, bull-shitter or other assorted low-life scum. (not surprisingly, the only people who believe Thailand is 'great' probably fall into this latter category!)

Great place / nice people. What's not to like?

Rampant corruption, tyrannical leader & government, overt racism, home to the largest assortment of criminals, scam artists, conmen and other low-life scum on the planet, total lack of judicial and legal system, world's worst motorists for starters .......shall I go on?

Sorry, no sympathy from here. He certainly wasn't the first to fail in business in this country and won't be the last.

I don't understand what being an ex-serviceman has to do with this story either; he was a thief that got caught is all.

Totally agree! Is he saying that being ex-military excuses him from being just another low-life in Thailand?

My wife and I have suffered a much worse fate than this loser - but we would never dream of stealing from others! Pathetic!

Your automatically guilty as soon as your arrested in Cambodia - doesn't matter what you did or didn't do. The Cambodian authorities would never admit they made a mistake anyway. Arrogance, together with stupidity and extreme greed, is a dangerous combination.

Of course not, does anyone really expect the corrupt activities of this lawyer will be brought to light in a court of law.

They know that taking on a huge worldwide news media like the BBC, will expose the whole rotten business and who is involved in these rings of corruption. Better to just drop the matter and try to sweep it under the carpet.

Sadly - corruption and crime are so endemic, far-reaching and entrenched in the Thai psyche that cases like this (important as they are) are just a 'drop in the ocean'. What it needs is a concerted and relentless effort by the international press (including the BBC) and on social media to expose the very real and serious dangers of buying property here in Thailand. How vulnerable and unprotected foreign investors are and how extremely difficult it is to achieve justice should things go wrong.

Unfortunately and for whatever reasons, the press have not really done enough in this respect - and truthfully, it is only because Mr Head ended up in court himself that this story received such extensive coverage. (I have personally contacted Mr Head, the BBC, the Guardian et al on numerous occasions regarding an extremely large and cruel property scam my wife and I and many others are victims of - and received virtually no response). Hopefully this case may lead to a harder stance towards Thailand's appalling record on property scams - especially as Thailand wishes to promote itself as a desirable destination for property investors.

yes, the plaintiff has dropped the case against Head but continued against the house owner because he is an easy target and he doesn't want the publicity that will go with suing, effectively the BBC. I hope the BBC support the defendant and continue to publicize the case

Mmmm......I hope that you are correct too and that the BBC (and other British media) will support Jonathon's co-defendant (Ian Rance). But based on mine and my wife's experiences - I wouldn't hold your breath!

We too are victims of a being cheated out of our home and all our money due to rampant corruption (by Thai government agencies and court officials) and arguably the clearest case of fraud, deception and extortion imaginable. We have contacted Mr Head and the BBC about our 'story' - but they have shown absolutely no interest in supporting or even contacting us......

Yes, it was a horrible accident but I think you're jumping to an unfair conclusion that the pedestrian was really at fault. This is a horribly unfriendly nation for pedestrians and people do walk in the roads, sometimes without choice. Yes, her running away was not admirable but that's not the same thing as saying it was her fault. You didn't even consider that maybe the cyclist was going too fast for the road conditions considering she was riding on the edge where it was entirely predictable that there would be pedestrians, even if just stepping out to cross the road.

+ Jingthing ...... As a long-time and experienced cyclist - I take great umbrage with your idiotic and insensitive comment regarding the manner in which the cyclist was riding! (having ironically stood up for the pedestrian - who the OP cited as not paying attention due to the fact she was playing with her mobile phone). We do not know for sure if this was the reason the pedestrian walked out into the path of the cyclist - but in any case, stepping out into a busy road without paying attention is totally irresponsible, and I'm sure that if it were a car or truck and not a cyclist you would have said she was plain stupid!

I have witnessed countless pedestrians walk out in front of me as well as other cyclists and only though sheer luck has a serious (possibly fatal accident) been avoided. Cyclists can easily travel at speeds that are commensurate with cars. (professional cyclists regularly average 45-50kph - and over 75kph in sprints - and even 'cycle-tourists' ride at approx. 20-30kph). Yet non-cyclists never take this into consideration. In addition - bicycles are considered as a mode of transport in many countries, and are therefore subject to the same traffic regulations as motorists. In effect, a cyclist is legally entitled to ride to the same speed limits as other road-users.

Clearly you have absolutely no concept of the dangers cyclists face and the fact that we have as much right to be on the roads as anyone else. Riding at the prevailing speed of moving traffic and 'commanding a position' on the road (ie; approx. 1 metre from the kerb) has long been advocated by numerous cycling bodies as far safer than riding 'defensively' and potentially delaying motorists - who are growing increasingly impatient and aggressive towards cyclists these days.

I suggest you acquire a bike for a few hours and experience what it is like - then perhaps you will be more qualified to pass judgment on the poor lady.

Didn't he have something stupid like 2 months left? Who escapes out of jail to avoid a 2 month sentence?

Yes he only had 2 months left of his sentence in Indonesia - but once that was completed, he was going to be immediately returned to Australia where he faced a very heavy prison sentence for drug-related crimes. However, and as seems likes like - he has ended up in 'Criminal's Paradise' ....Pattaya. He will fit in very nicely here and will be best friends with all the other low-life scum and Thai authorities in next to no time....

But the profits derived from downstream human trafficking are very lucrative it seems.  IS it any surprise that none of the Big Fish have been caught?  Police and army officials are lining their pockets more than likely.  After all, this is Thailand where corruption is elevated to an art form practiced from the top down.  Nothing will change, it's ingrained in the culture.

Absolutely! This is also the reason why so many criminals are attracted to Thailand and that crime rates are spiralling out of control. Not only are criminals free to operate without any fear of investigation (much less capture and punishment) but even if they are, they simply bribe their way out of it.

Corruption in Thailand is 'a way of life' engrained in the Thai psyche and the only way to rid this greed-driven highly destructive mindset is to catch the big fish. If you kill the head of the snake, the body will die too.

  11. This article is dreadfully misleading - eg: ''.....This is a civilized country with relatively good roads.....''

Firstly, Thailand may be many things - but it certainly IS NOT 'civilised' by any stretch of the imagination. The Cambridge English Dictionary defines a 'civilised' country as -

'A civilized society or country has a well developed system of government, culture, and way of life and that treats the people who live there fairly: A fair justice system is a fundamental part of a civilized society'.

There is not a well-developed government, nor does it treat people fairly (especially foreigners, or honest decent and law-abiding citizens). The justice (sic) system here is abysmally UNfair - and seems to be totally focused on helping criminals not only perpetrate their vile crimes on people but also ensuring  that they are protected against punishment in the extremely unlikely event that are actually caught or investigated.

Secondly, many roads are 'relatively' good - but even more are not! Large potholes, uneven and ridged surfaces are the order of the day and the number of roads I have gone down that have suddenly disintegrated into what resembles a ploughed field beggars belief!

If you are going to write inaccurate propagandist nonsense - at least have the decency of warning us first!

And the British Government say less are visiting every year. So Brits cannot count then

For UK travellers, Asia ticks all the boxes, Expedia says, citing culture and unique experiences, that must mean Corruption, Deception and BullS>>>.

According to official figures (and not some travel company wishing to drive up business) British visitors have fall by over 50% - from nearly 1M to less than 500,000 -in the first 6 months of 2017. Of course, Brexit and the low value of the pound may have affected this - but considering how crime-riddled, racist and corrupt Thailand is, perhaps the message is finally getting through?

I believe you are right. So. What might cause such a collective delusion? What are Thais taught that might lead them to believe they are superior to everyone?

Hint: They were not the first to come to this conclusion.

Mmmm.......I was told when I first came to Thailand that they are fiercely proud of the fact that they have never been colonised - maybe that has something to do with it? Whatever the case, it is simply inexcusable that any nation, government and people should behave so openly racist towards other nationalities.

WRONG!! Thais not only consider themselves superior to all other Asian nations - but to everyone else on the planet! Thais are without doubt the most overtly racist people I have ever encountered and the way they treat (all) foreigners is an absolute disgrace.

There is non so blind, as those that cannot see!

Absolutely! But then would you trust an organisation that claims annual tourist arrivals as 34 million - when much more reliable international sources calculate it to be more like 25 million?

However, it is not just TAT that is blind to the ills of Thailand - rampant crime and corruption has revealed by numerous sources (including the recent WEP study, New York Times and John Stapleton's book) are immediately downplayed and dismissed by Thai authorities. Its one thing to be blind to these issues - but a completely different matter to be utterly deluded.

Why not start an undercover operation where undercover cops go out for such cops and get them on tape, oh sorry, forgot where I was for a moment.

    Brilliant!

Interestingly - there is another thread here on TVN about Thailand being ranked in the top 20 most dangerous countries in the world. (the Thai authorities have immediately repudiated this claiming that the study was inaccurate of course). Yet in 2015, author John Stapleton published 'Thailand: Deadly Destination' based on his own research and the book was featured extensively in the British press (eg; The Guardian, Daily Mail & Daily Telegraph). Stapleton provides pretty conclusive evidence supporting his assertion and this was before the recent bombings and religious skirmishes!

Furthermore, an even more recent study into global corruption levels - found that Thailand has gone from 100th to 70th most corrupt country in the world in the last 12 months alone! (in effect an increase of 30% between 2015 and 2016!!) In most civilised countries this would be considered an absolute disgrace and a total PR disaster. Yet here in Thailand the dramatically soaring levels of crime, corruption, danger etc seem to raise barely an eyebrow with General Prayut and his government officials. It seems his strategy to 'rid Thailand of crime and corruption by 2020' is well on track then!

As for TOT they just don't get it they want tourist then they spoil their fun hmmm

Isn't that what the Thai approach to tourism is all about - take as much money off foreign tourists as humanely possible but give absolutely nothing in return?
