  1. Electrics here scare the hell out of me more than driving and cobras.

We were getting shocks from the shower on/off faucet since last week, wife got one off the metal drum inside the electric clothes dryer and then some lights on one switch panel in particular, quit working. Progressive failure day by day it seemed.

Found a new electrician who said the heating element inside the water heater tank had corroded. It's only about 2 years old, but we have been saltier well water during the continuing drought so that made sense.

Upon inspecting my Safe-T-Cut, he was shocked to see the GFCI dial was set to DIRECT. He turned it to 25 amps and it tripped the mains off every time. I didn't know what that dial was for, but about 2 years ago, we were having breaker trip problems. Some Thai dude came out, fiddled around with it for a few minutes and announced it was "fixed". I'm sure now that's how and when it ended up on DIRECT, and it's been like that ever since.

So 2 days of work, we've got a new water heater in. A new Safe-T-Cut installed, set to trip at 20 amps. And I bought a 6' long grounding rod to replace the 2' rods I had the heater and water pump on. Worth every Baht and I feel quite a bit better about the electrical system now..... but there's still room for improvement. Watch yourself out there.

Damn! That could have turned out really bad man.

I get scared just buy looking at that DIRECT logo on the picture.

  2. Another wonderful promotion for Thailand and the "Thai Way" ...

Really luudee...I don't know where your from, but can you imagine walking into a police station in New York or London with some fish & chips & expecting them to leap into action because it wasn't up to standard.........Some of you guys really live in fantasy land when you dream of how a farang should be treated........ you should have been around about 150 years ago, along with Somerset Maugham when the sun never set on the Empire---being a white man then you may have got the treatment you feel you deserve now.......coffee1.gif

    .

White man served bad lobster.......150 lashes for the cook

If i had a bad lobster in Sweden and the restaurant refused to replace it it would have been ALL OVER THE NEWS. :) I mean they probably would have shut down the place.

But i wouldnt really bother in Thailand, id just go home or go and get a burger. Some people think the small amount of pocket change they paid for food is worth the hassle of going to the Thai Police.

  3. I wouldnt even remove the concrete surface. Just drill huge holes, drive huge concrete piles down in the holes and then reinforce with steel bars and fill it up with concrete again.

  4. This is so sad. Just thinking of the pain and fear the little 3 year old must have felt makes me dizzy. Can even imagine how the mother is doing.

On a side track, one thing ive still not understood is why so many thai mothers leaves their babies with the grandma for such long periods. Ive seen children that only sees their mother one time a year or once or twice a month.

Yeah sure , work, but no work in the world justifies being absent from your own kid for that long. No way.

I think this is so rooted that it has become a tradition or a culture and it goes generations back.

  5. Bikes as far as I know, your green book becomes invalid after 3 years of non-payment of road tax. As I understand it, after 3 years its not a matter of simply paying the back tax, you have to go as far as the nigh impossible task of re-registering your bike.

    That's an interesting point!

I must admit I didn't hear that before but it would fit the usual behavior of just not paying tax and don't care about un-registering or official scrapping.

Anyone have experience with re-registering a bike?

  6. Sooooooooo a friend of mine not payed taxes for a bike he owns for about 5 years since he has not been around to use it. Will this be a issue when trying to renew it ? Any fines ?

Also wonder if one owns a car and not gonna use it for some years. Can one skip on the taxes if the car is not used?

  7. Thais (some) throws everything out the car window when at the country side. Bags, coke bottles, paper, food scraps, wrappings and all kinds of garbage.

I was CHOCKED first time i saw this since the nature and surrounding was/is so beautiful. Now im used to it. Who am i to say anything.

Nasty habit at moo baan houses is that they throw food scraps just meters away from their houses on right on the dirt. Not only will this look bad but it will also attract all kinds of pest animals like mice, rats and COCKROACHES. It really bothers me deeply thinking the thais that take care of my home will do this when i leave my home for work a couple of months per year. I hate roaches.

  8. What kind of visa do i have to have to be able to get a Thai DL out of my EU DL ? I always apply for international 1 year license at my home country. Just 1 month ago a Tom Cat drove right into my car and buckled my front bumper and when the insurance guy came out he didnt even want the international DL just my EU DL. Then they fixed my car in just 3 days. Didnt pay a dime and they even washed my car. Makes me think im good on just my EU DL? Probably would have been a different story if the "accident" was my fault? Cops also seems to be happy just checking my pink EU DL too. Never any problems. But still, id like one of those "Bad Lod" too!

  9. They only chase you but never bite and if you stop they will stop to and loose interest. I find it that thai dogs seems to be very afraid of long sticks for some reason. If a dog is bothering me ill just pick up a stick and raise it high and make some sounds and they will walk away. You should never run though. If a dog bites, grab their ears firmly and twist then as hard as you can. They will let go and be submissive. Hitting a agressive ticked dog wont help.

I admit. Dogs can be pretty scary in thailand. Especially stray dogs in packs on dark nights or early mornings.

  10. I remember a similar case years ago where a UK father and son had done some shady stuff with a ATM and they where sentenced to 50 years in prison. Some years later i was reading an article in thaiprisonlife website that said the kid had been released and returned to UK. The kid himself had commented in the comments section of the article and i remember him being a really nasty brat.

Where there is an vulnerability there will always be stupid people to exploit it.
