  1. Must be because farangs aren't regarded as persons.

Given the typical farang demographic in Thailand, do you actually blame them ?...

Would you let someone who wears dirty shorts, flip flops,Chang wife beater, drinks cheap beer, mumbles under his breath

and contentiously whines about Thailand ownership of a company ?

The BDP have most likely been reading all the Thai bashing comments on TV and thought "well F em then"

'Would you let someone who wears dirty shorts, flip flops,Chang wife beater, drinks cheap beer, mumbles under his breath ...' Farang is the Thai word (or non-word) for westerners. You appear to be getting confused with a far-too-typical Thai. Or do you seriously think your description doesn't apply to Thais, at all?

Not confused in the least, and I am sure there are some Thai's as well, but I am most certainly referring to farangs, and why would I be referring to Thai's anyway ?...they have no issues owning business in Thailand, so your off topic even bringing Thai's into this discussion

Lets face facts shall we, the vast majority of the whingers on this topic

    1. wouldn't have the capital to start a business in Thailand in the first place

    2. Have absolutely zero business acumen to even run a business in their own countries, never mind Thailand

    3. large numbers have been out smarted by illiterate bar girls, who possess more business acumen

  2. Average person earns 100k a month? What?? I must be in the wrong job then, I get half that, I know maybe 1 person here who earns 100k a month, what am I missing exactly?

You must missing a lot. I know a lot foreigners with over 100,000 Baht monthly payment. At the place I work are 5 of such guys, including me.

I know lots of foreigners earning 300 to 500 k month 100k/m is chicken feed...

We have Thai nationals working for us who make 200k/m min

The labourers on the factory floor earn 30k/m

Bunnychow, can I ask what industry such payments are in? That is frankly insane money.

I work in education, I have a PGCE and close to a decade of experience, half of that in western countries. Just so you know, the salary that most teachers get even in the UK would only come to about 145k a month (that's for the heads of department, year heads etc).

I have many friends who also teach here, many work in good international schools and simply don't bring home close to 100K. Mostly from the 60-80k bracket.

I am just curious as the article talks about the average salaries being 100k. I must be incredibly naive, but I don't see many places offering such packages here (unless of course it is in finance, or for multi national companies or some such)

Heavy Engineering and its not insane money, its pretty much the typical sorts of rates internationally - salary ranges of USD 8k to USD 15/m+ not that unusual...

Difference is in this industry getting it "wrong" can end up costing millions and millions of dollars so the tendency is to pay decent money for people who know what they are doing as its good business economics, Experience gets you the "good" money, but I am talking about 15 to 20 years minimum when I mean experience, not 5 to 10 years

As far as i am aware, teaching in a vocation/career and the money is secondary according to some of the teachers who have "preached" to me

Frankly having worked in the UK, the money is not that good anyway.. don't get me wrong its ok, but your can get more in other countries doing the same job

  3. I will be one campaigning to invoke reciprocal laws against any country which actively discriminates against foreigners due to race. No doubt the foreigners (including Thais) staying in their hosting country wouldn't find it amusing if their rights were relinquished in the same manner.

Thailand has yet again shown it's contempt to the outside world, that it firmly upholds racism, xenophobia, and direct discrimination towards non-thais. The country should hang it's head low in shame.

but yet you choose to live among and interact with these shameful racist, xenophobic people...so what does that say about you?...

make a stand and vote with your feet that will teach them..

  4. From what I learnt it is not possible to get a WP without working for a Thai company (whether this is as a "normal employee" or a company director).

    Isn´t that true?

You can be company director without a WP provided you play no active role in operating the business in Thailand.

A WP can be had for a representative office which technically is not a Thai company, but you can only operate the office for 6 years, need to front THB 6.million (if memory serves) you don't need the 4 Thai employee thing etc, and you not allowed to invoice via the rep office

So that means the OP cannot re-establish his HK company and use that entity to legally work in Thailand, right?

He could use his HK company as the basis to form a representative office in Thailand, with the HK office being the "head office"

  6. 1 mill a month? Couldn't spend that much without worrying what to spend it on. Got to go, the skipper tells me my yaught is leaving to catch the tide.

Even at 1.0 million/month at the current exchange rates is USD 35k/m (USD 420k/year)...yes its a very good money, but even that's not really in the skipper/ private yacht league...at an income of Thb 12 million/year these people will be paying around 4.0 million in tax as well.

My buddy earns exactly 1 million a month and has a speedboat. Also an airplane.

If he needs any help spending it, tell him I'm his man...

WOW and they say Thai women are money grubbing gold diggers who will prostitute themselves for the almighty dollar...blink.png

  8. To Jack Thompson - I was interested in your comments regarding this topic and wonder if you can offer me any advice?

I lived (and worked) in HK for 20 years and am therefore a 'HK resident' - although I am British. I also had my own business there and business and personal bank accounts. Regrettably, when I retired to Thailand just over two years ago, I closed my business and bank accounts thinking I would not need them any longer. However, I now wish to consider my consultancy business here - but have been told I need to establish a Thai company (and all the paraphernalia that involves!) as well as acquire a work permit.

I am considering re-registering my business in HK again and re-opening my bank accounts there also. From what I have read and if I have understood it correctly, can I then simply invoice my clients to pay me through my HK company? Also, would I still need a work permit as I am effectively working for a HK-based company?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

If your physically present in Thailand and working you would need a WP, where your getting paid is irrelevant in terms of the WP definitions

  10. Don't know if it's true, but recently read a couple of posts on non msm that the Chinese aren't to blame for their shoddy work rep, it's simply that Western buyers wanted cheapest and were given an option of materials by the Chinese, of course the cheapest won out. These posts were by Westerners who'd worked in China for some time. Anyone can verify? It sounds plausible, given most middle men, particularly the Thai, would not care so much about the end product over maximising their profit margin.

Having worked in China, they are fully capable to building quality product, so there maybe some truth in what your saying, one of things that is wrong these days is that procurement and buying departments in big companies are no longer the domain of technical people, but accountants and bean counters and the price is the driver...

lets say item "X" costs USD 100 to manufacture in the west with a known quality, and a similar product from China only costs you USD 20, doesn't due diligence dictate that you should be asking why such a big price differential ?...it not all labor cost

  11. If they are earning 100k a month in Pattaya they must be pimps

You do realize that 100 k per month is around 36K U.S. dollars per year. An ex-pat who is not making at least double that is an idiot. More likely to be making closer to 300k baht per month than 100k.

Doing what exactly?, the only jobs I heard of in that range were 4 star hotel management, not many doing that.

Jobs in Engineering, Eastern Seaboard, Japanese, Koreans, Western expats etc...and yes most making 300k plus month

International Engineering offices in BKK - same Asia/ Western expats - 300k to THB 1.0 mill/month dependent on the position.

time to get your head out the Thai sand....Expats in Thailand.... a lot more going one than "English Teachers" blagging 25k/m from a language school

What I don't understand is some of the howls of protest and calling BS on here when someone mentions 100k and above salaries (not that 100k is a big salary)

Did these posters think they were are big fish on their 30-100 k/m or actually think they were at the top of the shit pile in Thailand and the realization is they are actually little fish and near the bottom of the dung heap in the expat stakes in Thailand ?

  12. Invoices originating from Thailand, so confirmation he is working in Thailand, needs a WP and needs to pay Thai income tax,

Resident in Thailand for more than 180 p.a. he is classed as a resident of Thailand for tax purposes and therefore liable for tax on all worldwide income if he brings the money into Thailand the year its earned...*see above using invoices with a Thai address to confirm how they would know when the money was earned

UK sourced income - HMRC would get first dibs at his tax money and most likely nothing payable in Thailand under the reciprocal tax agreement

International clients - Thai tax man gets first dibs, as he is resident in Thailand for more than 180 days p.a.

    Ok ...

Over time, I´ve spoken to quite a few freelancers over here and how they handle their tax affairs. The vast majority of them said that they just invoice their clients in (predominantly) the UK but don´t declare the income to neither HMRC nor the Thai authorities (the latter understandably so since none of them had a WP). When I said "But this is tax evasion/fraud" they only replied: "Yeah, but they are never going to find out."

Well, I thought and still think that this is wishful thinking, isn´t it?

80 countries have signed an agreement with the UK government to hand over mass account data of British passport holders starting from next year I think it is...so if the freelancers are hiding their UK sourced money in these countries then the UK tax man will have the info, which could lead to many questions from the tax man.

I am not a freelancer and i bank in Singapore and a UK passport holder, so if the taxman from the UK ever came knocking.

    1. I work in Thailand and pay my taxes here

    2. Haven't set foot in the UK in over 15 years

    3. have no bank accounts in the UK

4 Have no house or properties

Per the new definitions, I have absolutely "no closes ties" with the UK, and I am automatically non resident...

so as far as I am concerned they can kiss my a*se

But under the new "non-residency" one needs to be quite careful if one has "ties" with the UK somehow or spends too much time in the UK in a given tax year

  13. Where would OP have to pay tax if he put his private address in Thailand on his invoices and invoices his UK and other international clients as a private individual? Assuming he lives in LOS all year around, wouldn´t it actually be the Thais who´d be entitled to receiving the tax? Now, since he cannot legally work as a freelancer he cannot pay the tax over here, since, officially, he isn´t working. So what will happen if he doesn´t declare his income to neither the UK nor the Thai tax authorities?

Invoices originating from Thailand, so confirmation he is working in Thailand, needs a WP and needs to pay Thai income tax,

Resident in Thailand for more than 180 p.a. he is classed as a resident of Thailand for tax purposes and therefore liable for tax on all worldwide income if he brings the money into Thailand the year its earned...*see above using invoices with a Thai address to confirm how they would know when the money was earned

  14. No significant cracks cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Small cracks quickly become significant cracks through useage.

New carriages should not have any cracks, if they have been manufactured to a proper standard.

No significant cracks is an internationally and technically correct technical term

Not all small cracks become significant cracks through usage

Dependent of the specification used - certain discontinutes are permitted in components

If the plebs knew of the number of non significant "cracks" in the worlds aircraft fleets, they would be too scared to fly..

I know your an all knowing farang TV member with "expert" levels of knowlege of every subject under the sun

But on this ocassion, your statements of fact are in fact factually wrong

Oh dear. Someone thinks they haven't been given the credit they were due for something.

So naturally. they slag off all TV members. Obviously.

    Winnie

Yes of course when someone is talking through their a*se

  15. Average person earns 100k a month? What?? I must be in the wrong job then, I get half that, I know maybe 1 person here who earns 100k a month, what am I missing exactly?

I have to agree with this. Perhaps a handful of farang teachers in pats earning in excess of 100k a month. The journos writing these articles are full of B.S...

what makes you think all farangs working in Thailand are teachers ? plenty of other farangs working in other industries who top 100k month plus easy

  16. Average person earns 100k a month? What?? I must be in the wrong job then, I get half that, I know maybe 1 person here who earns 100k a month, what am I missing exactly?

Not Bullshit in the least..its factual and true....Some farangs do actually have proper paying jobs in Thailand and have no need to hustle at the local "English school" for 25k to 30k/m to "live the dream"...sorry to shatter the urban myth that Thailand doesn't have well paying jobs for farang's...it does if you are needed and wanted for your skills and knowledge

I have been working in Thailand for the last 15 years in the heavy engineering sector and I earn about 35% more than I earned in the western countries I worked in which included both the UK and US.
